Hi,

I don't know if you know it, but personally i have just heard of it this week.
7zip is a new compression format which beats by far existing ZIP and RAR compression methods.

I have done a test with 57 files, 32.6MB :

ZIP -> 10.7MB (max compression ratio)
7ZIP-> 3.59MB (max compression ratio)

Compression ratio better by 66.5% (for these particular files).

Official website:
http://www.7-zip.org/

7zip supports other common format like ZIP and RAR, and is FREE :)

regards,

gkweb.

Hi guest riverwind,

i'm glad for you, that's anyway a fact that it isn't widely used and not even known, at least among all people I know, just one was knowing it :)

and besides that, good "bump" riverwind ;)

regards,

gkweb.

I only came across 7-zip recently myself and that was after having used Google extensively to find a general purpose extractor. As such, threads like this are always welcome and I would commend GKWeb for sharing his experience.

For those interested, also consider ZipGenius (www.zipgenius.it) (also free but not GPL) - it supports the 7-zip format but can also extract RAR and ACE archives (7-zip cannot extract ACE) which may make it more useful to those who download ACE files.

Anything that does not support 7zip nowdays is outdated. Of course, the masses are still unaware of this.

IZarc is pretty good too.
