[Opinions] aTube Catcher/Youtube Downloader

I've been looking for some tool that would allow me to download Youtube videos. I use Chromium as my web browser, and I'm aware of Youtube Downloader extension.

I also came across aTube Catcher. I'm wondering if anyone here is using it and how has the experience been so far? (I searched the forum for atube, but no references exist.)

Also, regarding Youtube Downloader (Chrome's extensions), how's been your experience so far with it? I've seen a comment at the extensions's page saying it wouldn't work on all videos.

I use Youtube downloader sometimes. It has worked thus far on every thing I've tried, but that is pretty limited, maybe a couple dozen, and all are short 5-8 minute videos that are tutorials, so maybe they aren't "hard" to download or something. I use it with Chromium. I have only downloaded 360p mpeg, not tried anything else.

I'll see how it fairs with ~20 min videos. Some a bit more. I'll give aTube Catcher a try as well. I'll see if I can make it "portable"...

It also takes a really long time to dload. There must be a cap or something. I have a 1mb pipe, and I can barely acheive 150k dloads, and it effects the whole internet (yep, that right, the WHOLE internet - I bet your browsing slows too when I'm dloading ;) ) when dloading, so maybe it isn't optimized, never looked before as I don't use it much.

Odd... I no longer see the Youtube Downloader extension at Google Chrome WebStore ???

I never bother with these extensions on Windows. VideoCacheView works on almost all sites with no extra bandwidth needed.
It can capture flash videos (and other files) from the temporary folder and browser's cache.

But then don't you have to watch the whole clip first for that to work ??? Sometimes i download them to view later.

I have just tried the free version of DAM with chrome - http://www.damdownloader.com/ and it caught with it's "Media Grabber", all 5 youtube videos i tried ;)

Indeed, unless you only want parts of it. I never download without watching what it is first.

As you know with chrome's design, these things just don't work as well as say firefox but yes - it did work. Had to select HD, let it reload and after 2 tries, the media grabber caught it (268mbs vs 69mbs for the 320p feed). I like chrome and am willing to show more patience ;)

I did some more research, and found these ones, that also allow downloading Youtube videos, etc:

Orbit Downloader -http://www.orbitdownloader.com
Miro -http://www.getmiro.com (I do enjoy using open-source software the most I can. I was actually going to try it some day.)
Vuze -http://www.vuze.com
vDownloader -http://www.vdownloader.es/index.php (ClearCloud DNS blocks access to it. Nothing in URLVoid flags it. I reported as being a false positive.)

I'll also give Miro a shot. I think it will be a keeper. It sounds like an interesting media player as well.

Didn't mention my favourite manager "IDM" - http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/ as i have an older version that doesn't work with chrome but i just tried their latest beta and it works great now with chrome. Give it a try!

I actually downloaded their latest beta yesterday. I still haven't tried it, though.
