you do not have a choice to install the toolbar on this one

"Change Your Reader Skin" really? "Customize the shortcut keys" honestly? "Windows Explorer Thumbnails" HOORAY! More room for exploits!

This is turning out to be more of a bloatfest than Adobe. I'm glad Microsoft might be building a PDF reader into Windows 8.

my feelings exactly and now you have no choice but to install the toolbar which is ridiculous, now to find a pdf reader that works well is fast and doesnt use a boatload of memory, i like pdfx but its memory usage is inasane at times and when you limit it imo it gets so slow to use...

Yeah, I think I was wise switching to Sumatra year ago. I think Foxit's only good point was that it was fast alternative for Adobe Reader, but now I'd rather install Adobe than Foxit.

After all, PDF reader doesn't need to be so complicated.

zfactor

no this is why im a bit ticked off. i see the ask bar installed but there is no uninstall option. now i was able to remove it with both jv16 and revo but then when i started foxit i got a error message.

also you can NOT install v5 on top of v4 like before. you must first uninstall v4 then install v5 no way around that.

does anyone else have the uninstall option in the control panel??

i actually like nitro but it does not render many things properly especially graphics they are all choppy and fuzzy when you fill the screen width wise to be able to read a pdf well.

okay something odd. i re-downloaded the installed from foxit web site and tried on a different computer and this time had no notification of any toolbar at all and none got installed?? i wonder if they updated the installer to fix this? im going to try on another system to make sure

I was too very angry about this damn ASK-Toolbar. - But after installation of Foxit Reader v5 on Win7 I could simply uninstall this unwanted ASK-Stuff without any problem via the usual way. I never saw that toolbar active in Firefox or IE. - Foxit Reader seems to work without this. But I am also really considering switching back to Adobe if Foxit doesn't stop this sneaky behavior.

We users don't want those pesky toolbars! :thumbd: - If a vendor can't live without them they should close their company. - After all the newest version of Adobe Reader isn't such a slow bloat and Foxit isn't faster anymore. So they dig their own grave with such criminal tactics (installing unwanted toolbars is not better than installing any other malware to me). - Stop it Foxit or people won't use your software anymore, last warning! *puppy*

I had my installer downloaded from filehippo.com a few hours ago. - ASK-Toolbar was included there and I saw it first during unpacking when my firewall wanted to block it. - So maybe there are different installers available? - I also don't like the colours of the new version btw. - I guess it's time for a change. ;)

I'm considering going back to Adobe if this is the new path of FoxIt. Filehippo is a reliable source, so I doubt that they tampered with the installation file.

I got the toolbar with a direct download from the Foxit site this morning.

When I installed it, it trashed my desktop--moved every icon to the left side. I did not investigate what else might have happened during the install--just reverted to a prior snapshot.

It's very rare that I need to view PDF's now (i.e., while still online and using browser) ... I normally just download and save them, then view them later with Tracker's PDF-XChange Viewer. It's fairly "lean and mean" and quick, but does offer a good number of viewing options.

I'm glad I uninstalled Foxit a while ago & installed PDF-XChange (I only used Foxit for a few weeks anyway) but even PDF-XChange had a toolbar download with one of its releases a few months ago. It didn't install on my Win 7 64 bit PC but I got it on my notebook on IE Eight). It uninstalled easily enough & Tracker said it was a mistake. I just hope this Foxit fandango doesn't give them ideas. :o

That doesn't sound like a good idea to me, especially not in the long run. - We avoided Adobe not only because it was a while ago slow as hell but had also security holes all the time. - And Foxit needs to get fixed also if I am not wrong. So using an old version might be a risk the older it gets. Because of that I would suggest regarding PDF-reader-programs to always use the latest version with the latest exploit fixes.

whats wierd is im not sure how it determines to install the toolbar or not. it seems to do it whenever it feels like it. on 2 systems it skipped right over it and didnt even have the checkboxes at all. and didnt install any toolbar.

then i tried to install it on 2 other systems and just stopped the install because it would show the toolbar page and of course there is no opt out for the ask bar when it does. not sure what it going on with it.

I think it depends on OS and 32bit or 64 bit. I haven't tried Foxit and now never;)

I asked at another forum I haunt and one user said they had no opt-out warning at all (and got the Toolbar)... Another had a very confusing opt-out page that was geared to confuse anyone that didn't spend a while reading the page (IOW, if you weren't very careful, you got the Toolbar!)

I understand Ask's shady methods (they are well known) but come on Foxit, shame on you for descending into the basement with Ask!

I need to make a living like anyone else and so does Foxit. But I don't use quasi-deceptive practices to do it!!

BoerenkoolMetWorst
May 27th, 2011, 09:06 AM
Just tried it in a VM, it did offer the toolbar as opt-out, but not so shady(just uncheck everything and click next.) It has a nice new fresh look, but the advertisement is no longer optional and it wants you to register, only offering a Yes and Not now option, not a Not ever option..
On offering the toolbar or not, I don't think it depends on whether it is a fresh install or not, as I did an upgrade(even from within Foxit reader) then it launched the v5 installer and it needed to remove v4 first(not automatically, just launched v4 uninstaller.) After that the installation of v5 could proceed. Perhaps it's just a bug, I remember something like this with the toolbar installing even though users told it not too, I'm pretty sure that was with foxit reader.

I think you are right. When Tracker accidentally installed the Ask Toolbar on PDF-XC it only seemed to affect 32 bit systems.

-{ Quote: "I haven't tried Foxit and now never;)" }-

My advice is to go with PDF-XC or Sumatra. I never really liked Foxit anyway, it didn't seem too happy on a 64 bit OS. PDF-XC has a 64 bit version.

I've always used Foxit's stand-alone (portable) Foxit Reader.exe but I couldn't find it for v5. I fired off an inquiry to their support:

"Currently we do not have ... our Foxit Reader 5.0 ... as a portable version, our developers are looking into it and we have no specific time of release."

Oh well, let's see what JTH might whip up over at portable apps. Otherwise maybe no more portable Foxit Reader. :'(

The last release of the previous version is 4.3.1.0323.

BTW, my email to their support was answered in less than 3 hours. :thumb:

I just updated one of my Windows XP Pro SP3 PC's to version 5 using the "check for updates" in version 4.x and after the update I also found that all of my Desktop icons were rearranged and moved to the left side of the Desktop. Strange!

The options screen shown in Post #37, above, was shown during the version 5 installation. I unselected the three (3) options shown.

Foxit Reader version 5 "seems" to be working properly.

How much real estate does Foxit 5 use installed? The whole reason I switched from Adobe to Foxit was because Foxit was lean. I see now the installer is up to 14MB. I wouldn't mind having the new version but if it's too big I'll just stick with what I have. Anyone know?

Also zfactor, or anyone who has used the msi installer, did you have to uninstall 4 first?

Meh I rarely use PDFs. I have them open in Chrome when I use them. It's definitely not as functional as Adobe's PDF reader but it's far more secure.

allizomeniz
May 29th, 2011, 02:54 PM
Found an article at ghacks that says twice the amount of hard drive space as version 4, so approximately 22MB. I'm gonna stick with what I've got. Looks like the trend is toward bloat and there's nothing in 5 I can't live without.

I do like PDF-XChange, but they've got a nag button on the interface you can't get rid of. I might get used to it eventually but they shouldn't say it's free when it's not. It's a device to try and get you to buy the commercial version. Too bad.

J_L
May 29th, 2011, 08:51 PM
It is free, and works without limits (other than Pro features). Do you think every program with an ad isn't free?

DBone
May 29th, 2011, 09:48 PM
For those of you that use Chrome, you can have Chrome as your default PDF viewer:

allizomeniz
May 30th, 2011, 01:01 AM
To me free means without strings. When you have a nag button right on the main interface (one you can't hide) prodding you to buy, that's a string. It obviously doesn't bother some people but for me, in this case, it's a deal breaker. Sometimes I'll put up with ads in freeware if the software's worth it, but Foxit is just as good for what I need. So everything else being equal, the ad tips the scale in favor of Foxit. But I will say in its favor, PDF-XChange doesn't have watermarks.

J_L
May 30th, 2011, 01:13 AM
I find automatically installed adware more of a string than a nag button.
