I have a 500Gb SATA hard drive that has run into problems - Windows reports that the hard drive has an error in the boot sector (when trying to load the operating system).

In Windows XP I can see the drive when mounted externally, but not the partitions or directories.

With Paragon Backup & Recovery™ 2011 I can see the partitions and the directory tree, when I try to run the File Transfer Wizard, Paragon Backup & Recovery™ 2011 will move the folders to the clipboard, BUT, it will not let me press "Next" as it can not calculate the volume/size of the file(s). I left the program overnight with no success.

The drive is physically okay - it spins and is not ceased. Are there any suggestions on the next approach I should take?

If it was just a problem with the bootsector code being corrupt - you should be able to fix it easily using fixboot command from xp recovery console.

Because Paragon is having trouble moving the files - you may have file system errors.

Try running checkdisk from the xp recovery console - may fix those if you are lucky.

I don't know if there is any kind of checkdisk on the free paragon linux disc - if so, you could give that a try as well.
