But more on topic, as much as I hate too, I've got to side with Galadriel regarding Les Habs as my grandmother was born in Quebec.

Yah, the boys played great tonight! :D Belak made his presence known ... And for some reason that got Almo playing a physical game ... I couldn't believe he had 5 or 6 BIG hits ... that was great to watch ... lol, I hope all the rough stuff doesn't hurt his hip though.
The Boys got their game together tonight ... offense, defense, transition and hard nose play to boot ... this series looks far from over now.

Canada digs deep for gold at world championship
Last Updated Sun, 09 May 2004 18:23:26
PRAGUE - Canada's team at the world hockey championship has won the gold medal for the second year in a row - something that hasn't happened in nearly 50 years.
The Canadians, a collection of players whose teams didn't make the playoffs, or were ousted in the early rounds, turned in a gritty performance to beat a talented Swedish team 5-3 - the same team it defeated in last year's championships.
Unlike last year, Canada managed to win in regular time, but it had to battle back from a 3-1 deficit with two quick goals late in the second period.
.
.
.
.
But the hero of the day was Jay Bouwmeester, who snapped home a wrist shot just 20 seconds into the third period, giving Canada the eventual victory. Matt Cooke added his second goal halfway through the period to secure the win.
Sunday's win gives Canada its first back-to-back world titles since 1959.

Flames edge Sharks in overtime
WebPosted Sun May 9 20:01:53 2004
CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Steve Montador may be the unlikeliest of scoring heroes, but the young Calgary Flames defenceman scored the biggest goal of his career to give the Flames a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Sunday.
Montador scored at 18:43 of the first overtime as the sixth-seeded Flames took Game 1 of their Western Conference final series against the second-seeded Sharks.
The Flames got the winning goal after capitalizing on a poor line change from the Sharks.
With Montador streaking into the Sharks zone calling for the puck, Calgary captain Jarome Iginla dropped a pass back to the rookie blue-liner, who made no mistake burying the puck inside the left post by Sharks netminder Evgeni Nabokov.
It was Montador's first career playoff goal.

Yup, Go Flames Go! Good luck to the new Co-Captain Canada ... Iggy with his quest for the cup. (Captain Canada's Edm. Ryan Smith, Cgy. Iggy)
Sidenote to this series: I hope little st.Louis doesn't come back and bite Calgary in the butt. He was Released by Calgary, and no Team claimed him of the waiver wire. He's sure proving everybody wrong, about the size issue ... looks like the only thing you need big is heart. Stevie Sullivan seem to prove it to the Leafs', but for reasons unknown they gave him away for nothing!

Help me out here. Without any reasonable prospects of a fat NFL-type or MLB-type TV contract waiting in the wings, do the NHL owners have any real incentive to bargain in good faith with the players? Seems to me that they might just lock them out in order to "bust" the union.

If the NHL continues toward a lockout ... it's starting to seem pretty definite.
Hopefully, TSN, Sportsnet, and The Score ... will sign up more content from ... the OHL, QMJHL , Western and AHL ... they play some fantastic hockey. Hi D&C, ;)
No, I understood what you were saying ... and I agree .... a lockout will be devastating to the NHL ... some of the US teams, I think wouldn't recover from it ... Phoenix, Panthers, (yes, even TBay), Carolina, LA Kings, Sharks, Buffalo, Pittsburg, etc. .... Teams that wouldn't be affect ... All the Canadian teams, The other (4 US) Original Six teams - Detroit, Boston, NY Rangers, Chicago, others teams probably not affect NY Islanders, Philly, Dallas, the AVs ... None the less, it certainly WILL be a mistake! by both the NHL & the NHLPA ;)
Sorry, if you took me other than I intended ... It's just the passion I have for the game ... I wasn't offended by anything you said ... Actually I agree with it for the most part. -{ Quote: "
Leafs hold onto Roberts, Nieuwendyk
TSN.ca Staff
6/30/2004
Gary Roberts and Joe Nieuwendyk aren't going anywhere. The two veteran forwards who grew up together in Whitby, Ont., have agreed to terms with the Toronto Maple Leafs, opting not to test unrestricted free agency at midnight.
Sources say Roberts agreed to a one-year deal with a base salary of $3.75 million while Nieuwendyk agreed to a one-year deal that will pay him $3 million.
That's a $500,000 decrease from what Roberts earned last season and a $1 million increase over what Nieuwendyk earned in 2003-04.
Also, defenceman Aki Berg has re-signed with the Maple Leafs. Sources say it's a one-year deal at $1.4 million, the same salary he earned this past season. Berg was not extended a qualifying offer by the Maple Leafs and if he hadn't worked out a new contract before midnight tonight, he would likely have become an unrestricted free agent.
The Leafs are continuing negotiations with impending unrestricted free agents Ed Belfour. Belfour's negotiations may extend beyond midnight, which means he will be eligible for unrestricted free agency, but the market for goalies suggests Belfour's best deal is likely to be cut in Toronto and that could still happen on July 1st or later" }-

I can't believe all of the quaily FA's available ... see as the leafs seem to be in a spend mood and don't seem to believe in a hard cap coming ... maybe they'll add some more talent to the corps.
An impressive list of unrestricted free agents which includes Alexei Kovalev, Paul Kariya, Michal Nylander, Richard Matvichuk, Alexei Zhamnov, Peter Bondra, Mathieu Schneider, Teemu Selanne, Dominik Hasek, Brett Hull, Brendan Shanahan, Steve Yzerman, Chris Osgood, Craig Conroy, Ziggy Palffy, Vincent Damphousse, Alexei Zhitnik, Mike Knuble, Glen Murray, Brian Rolston, Eric Lindros, Curtis Brown, Jason Allison, Adam Deadmarsh, Anson Carter, Valeri Bure, Niklas Sundstrom, Pavol Demitra and Kevin Weekes

Well Snowbound,
It looks like the Baby Leafs are coming to Toronto ... now that that Edmonton has relocated the RoadRunners to Edmonton, so the only hurdle now is AHL approval ... it'll be great to watch them play all the time ... I sure hope Leafs TV doesn't have any designs on making this a pay-per-view, Leafs TV only thing. The fact that I'll miss 10 games next season (either 2004/05 or 05/06 should there be a lockout) has already got me steamed! >:( ... What bandits >:(
I sure feel sorry for those in St. John's ... they love their team, and are a great support. It's too bad really ... I'd love to have the Baby Leafs here, but not at the cost of the fans in St.John's. Hopefully if the NHL gets things worked out cap wise, and some sort of revenue sharing maybe we'll see a few more Canadian Teams ... Back to Quebec City, Winnipeg, then expansion/transfers to places like St. John's, Halifax, Regina/Saskatoon, Hamilton.

Lets hope the Toronto crowd is more supportive in this game, there was a noticable different in crowd support & noise between Games 1 & 2 at the Bell Center in Montreal and Game 3 at the ACC in TO. Just curious. I haven't watched hockey for quite some time so i am out of the loop.
The players that I have a problem categorizing are Howe, Gretsky, Lemieux and about 20 Canadiens. Where do you guys place them. I really doubt there are any current players in their league.

Well, as for Howe he played until the age of 50 so nuff said there. ;)
As for Gretsky, arguably the best player ever.
Mario Lemieux probably would have broken a few of Gretsky's records, would he have been unhampered by so many injurys plus cancer.....
Probably a little known fact, he hardly ever attended practices. That's how good he was.
As for those 20 Canadiens, i'll mention 1.
Henri Richard, 11 Stanley Cup rings in his career with the Montreal Canadiens.

Yeah, the "Pocket Rocket" was a joy to watch. Of course he had a few "decent" team mates. Just thinking about the teams that Montreal had in that era sends chills down my spine. As in all sports now, mostly because of Free Agency, I do not follow any particular team but enjoy watching individual players. Since Bird, Magic, and Kareem have left I also gave up on the NBA. MLB, forget it! There are still quite a few Soccer players left, not the cheats or prima donnas, who are worth watching.

Sadly, Completely Comical.
I wonder when all involved will wake up and smell the coffee?
I don't think to many teams will survive this disaster, especially in the southern States. Too bad none of those involved seem to realize that there will be a new economic in hockey, like it or not, and Neither side is being represented fairly or properly IMHO. Contraction will be the result of this stalemate, which will have consequences for all.
Here are a few results I think we are likely to see. First and foremost the loss of at least 10 teams. So many 3rd and 4th liners, can pretty much kiss their jobs away. The loss of these teams will also mean there will be new found abundance of talent, which should results in lower overall salaries, due to the flooding of the supply side of the market, and the contracted demand - but who knows it's not like the owners haven't shot themselves in the foot several times over the past two decades ::) . So it looks like the group designated to be protected by the NHLPA, will get what they deserve too :). I wonder how the NHL is going to compensate the teams that do fold, or how it will compensate surviving teams for the loss of revenues (merchandise sales etc.) generated by those newly departed teams. A bad national TV deal, will get much worse, with the loss of interest in general, and specifically in Cities that will have lost teams. Just so it doesn't look like I left the NHLPA out of the loss column, in the end less members equals less dues. :)
So clearly there are no winners. Gary will get his new "economics", and league will re-launch the "new" NHL ... but in the end the price paid is too much. Sadly, the league will never ever be the same again.
For the record, I won't be around to watch the re-birth. I love hockey, and the NHL ain't the only game in town. Hopefully TSN, Sportsnet, and The Score will have the foresight to sign regional deals to televise minor hockey, like the OHL, QMJHL, and the Western ... then the fans won't totally lose.
~LOL ... Talk about committing suicide.~

A pox on both their houses. I hope they know the damage they have done.
The myth that hockey players were different from other greedy pro sports athletes has now been blown out the door.
The owners can't control themselves so now they need someone else to do it for them.
How typical is that.
The junior ranks will definitely be getting my support for a long time to come.

LOS ANGELES — The NHL and its players' association reached a tentative deal on a new collective bargaining agreement that, if finalized, would end a lengthy lockout, the Los Angeles Times reported today.
There had been several reports that a deal was imminent.
The newspaper, citing anonymous sources close to the negotiations, said the agreement will feature a hard salary cap linked to 54 per cent of league revenue, a 24 per cent rollback of existing contracts and qualifying offers. It will also include a provision that will limit the salary of any player to 20 per cent of the team cap figure in any season.
