Do I have to keep TDS running to work?

Hi, I was wondering if I have to keep TDS running to work or if it worked like wormguard in the background. I am also wondering if I need to configure TDS at all or use the preset configuration that TDS was installed with. If I should reconfigure it, is there a link or does someone have suggestions and what I need to change?
