Why is everybody mentioning more than 1 app when the thread title clearly states "Most favourite security app" does that mean 2 or more?
So, mine would be Shadow Defender. :thumb:

Okay, okay, you are right. Sandboxie is my favorite. And then NOD32. And WinPatrol is a close 3rd. And DefenseWall would probably be in there if it was 64bit. And now I'll have to check out Shadow Defender. Thanks for keeping this thread on topic.

That is indeed the tough part of this topic... picking one and not two or three.
Since few of us can imagine using just one app, our brains resist the instruction to select just one.
But all of that aside, going purely with the thread topic to pick the "most favorite", I would have to say avast! Free. ;)

Hi:
Well defensewall has weak-points (certain stuff pass through) and not 100% effective as it is mentioned in AV-comparative single appl. test. Also geswall on several youtube tests showed malware by passed it so not 100% secure either. SO far the best I have seen from all the youtube test videos (100 of them) Appguard got perfect. Also sandboxie was not immune either. It did not stop some malware once you choose to save some safe application on hard disk and its outside sandbox (malware could hide inside safe applications). From all the videos and research I done so far Appguard was the winner. So this is my view.
Now I think Appguard + Norton antivirus + Comodo firewall with Defense plus (set to maximum by setting its sandbox setting from "partial Trust" to "block" for unknown detections) plus DEP and UAC with fully updated windows should be safe.

Other than the trusting something that shouldn't be trusted, I can't think of anything that can get through. I'd like to know what these weak points are myself. Please enlighten us.
jmonge
October 5th, 2010, 12:02 AM
the only weak point i can see is the user adding a malware to the trusted area but the weaker here is the user and not defensewall;D
Boyfriend
October 5th, 2010, 12:39 AM
In default mode, it isolates everything coming from Internet/USB/Network Shares. It is up to user to run an executable as trusted. With proper settings, I am sure nothing can bypass it right now. I have added my important files and folders in secure area and tested numerous scenarios. None of untrusted file/executable can access them until I exclusively grant permissions to access them.

Hi:
Well here is what AV-comperative says for the defensewall weakpoint.
"DefenseWall HIPS does not block e.g. buffer overflows, phishing attacks, internet connections/browser hijacks."
Link: ~ Removed Direct PDF Link as per AV-Comparatives Request - See Single Product Reviews (http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/single-product-reviews) page for the actual PDF ~
So thats what defensewall misses but I guess CIS 5 will fill this gap maybe?

Don't forget that test was from may 2009 with version 2.53, almost a year and a half ago, and DW still stoped everything AVC through at it.
The current version 3.07 has a number of improvements (http://www.softsphere.com/news/) including a two way firewall sense then.
Although no one solution (or any setup for that matter) can provide 100% protection, DefenseWall comes pretty damn close.
But a layered security setup is always the best choice, IMO.
So long as there is no (or very little) overlapping.
Back OT.......
Can't make up my mind which is my favorite, DefenseWall or Shadow Defender. :o

That's just funny.
It reminds me of a neighbour of mine that had 6 AVs running realtime on his machine. He too said he was never infected and that he couldn't be because of all those AVs.
Then a friend of mine (cough, cough) infected his pc remotely with a trojan he made and all went to hell. :argh: Now he uses linux...
ok...
PE Guard is just my favourite. Love it. Comodo firewall is pretty cool as well and AVZ.

I have never had an AV. Don't need one.
Ask your friend to try to infect me with a trojan. I will give you both $10,000 if you succeed.
BTW, PE Guard is a barebones security application that delivers only the essential options required to keep malware out. But if you have common sense like me, you won't need it anyway.
Why waste money on something that is only needed if you are visiting illegal/dodgy websites and installing suspect programs from dodgy websites?

You seem to be way to confident about your security setup.
Let's just hope no one claims that prize. :)

I completely disagree with you, and i'm sorry to say that sounds very noobish to me.
What about Phishing? Drive by downloads? ARP poisoning?....etc... There's no common sense strong enough to deal with those. Also, there aren't DNS servers or hosts editors enough to block all malicious websites. So, if you want to browse the internet freely, you will eventually find yourself in one of those dangerous websites. What common sense will you use then?
Even websites you think are safe can be hacked and spread dangerous stuff. That occurs sometimes.
But, hell... Maybe it's just me.

Protect it from what? I don't download anything that contains malware.
In fact I rarely download anything new. And when I do, it's something I buy from a reputable and credible company. And on occasion, I have downloaded something from softpedia, and then I will upload it to virustotal before I install it. But I think softpedia are rather trustworthy.
So I don't use an AV, no need, and never been infected.

You should be looking at prevention before the cure. If you are infected with a keylogger to begin with, then you need to reevaluate your whole internet behavior and raise your education in how to prevent being infected in the first place.
My banks that I use all have virtual keyboards that changes everytime you log in, making keyloggers useless anyway. What kind of bank do you use that don't use virtual keyboards? I would change banks if I were you.
In addition, if my bank's website was hacked and redirected, I am fully covered for all loss if I was a victim.

Curious. According to your Wilders posts you have run the following at some point during 2010:
- Malwarebytes
- A-squared
- Avira
- Nod32
- Avast
- Norton
Hopefully that puts this little detour to an end. My favourite - it has to be Sandboxie :)

I have tried many applications out of interest and curiosity, but I never have them installed and resident on my system. Total waste of time...never been infected in 20 years and never will be because prevention is better than a cure and my system has preventive measures setup making it impossible for malware/virus to be downloaded and installed.

that's odd because for me, using NoScript and Sandboxie like you do is "nonsense".
why is it "nonsense" for me?
because those apps stress me out.
i don't feel "Zen like" when using those apps.
one should use what one is comfortable with.
though i wouldn't mistake my way of things as "common sense"...

Ok that's confusing. Guess Gobbler's post got deleted but mine didn't. Anyway, he suggested dealing with noxious elements by using a sandbox policy.

1. Surely Sandboxie - Ultra light - fast, ultra secure, practical and easy to use.
2. Prevx - Fast, small and light, strong realtime scanner, didn't find conflicts.
3. GesWall
*Shadow Defender is good, but needs lots of exclusions to make it practical for everyday use.
*ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE never let me down for simple image backup and restore.
*HIPS - many conflicts with system and apps.( Online Armor, Comodo...no matter)
*Classical AV slows down the system, more or less, and not too strong on 0 days malware.

With the many ways Sandboxie can be set-up (and the fact that there are uses for it besides security), I like it just as much as AppLocker.

i solved that problem (for my liking anyway) by running portable apps (as much as possible), and putting a download/save folder on a different drive than my OS.
that drive never goes in "shadow mode".
this way i don't even need to use exclusions.
when i want something to "stick" ( Windows updates, software install etc) i do it in non shadowed mode.
this works perfect for my need.
