I don't know if other "services" do this, but i have noticed that Hotmail keeps refreshing ? itself every minute or so ! Whether it's doing the same or similar ?

Hotmail, Gmail, Y! Mail, and just about every modern webmail service all do this to check for new messages. The idea is that you leave your webmail open in its tab, and the tab title changes to read "xx new messages" or something similar.
