Windows Vista - Manually Enabling or Disabling Comodo Secure DNS

You can manually enable or disable Comodo Secure DNS service in your Windows Vista computer by modifying the DNS settings accessible through Control Panel > Network and Internet settings.

To enable the Comodo Secure DNS service, modify the DNS server IP address settings to Comodo Secure DNS server IP addresses. The IP address are:

Preferred DNS : 156.154.70.22
Alternate DNS : 156.154.71.22

Important Note: If you have chosen to install CIS in a language other than English then the DNS Server addresses to be entered are:

Preferred DNS : 156.154.70.25
Alternate DNS : 156.154.71.25

Cyrano2
September 17th, 2010, 05:37 PM
Both are in english but ".25" it's for non-english countries so you should use ".22" to have a faster response.

So far I had used OpenDNS and have now switched to Comodo. I must say that I'm impressed: A couple of sites which had always been rather slow for me to access now open significantly faster! I didn't expect that. Great :)

Lets see I have CIS 5 complete, Comodo time machine, Comodo trust connect and now Comodo DNS.
Does that kinda make me a comodo fanboy?
Oh wait I have prevx SOL installed too.
All comodo products, including the DNS, are working well together.

I don't understand, I thought Comodo had this out months ago. I guess it was in beta and now it's not?

Just a note Comodo DNS has been out for a while but malware blocking was never active.

Does not block malware directly, the dns will block websites address.

If you are trying to download -www.X4XfhgXX54.com/malware.exe- Comodo DNS will block it (if they have this website blacklisted). Also will block phishing sites, fake sites and all this kind of things.

Thanks for the info!

Now, I'm not trying to be cheecky or anything, but what is the detection of threats based on? Last I remember Comodo's anti-virus wasn't exactly leader of the pack, so have they done something to make the DNS blocking better than their AV?

It blocks all subdomains such as ***.co.cc and ***.byethost7.com although they're not harmful. :(

Yeah, demonoid, ghacks and other FP's...
It's the first day though, maybe in time they'll refine their lists.

I like the fact that such warnings can be ignored and can be entered into that site. So I am still using that.

Is that better or worse than Norton DNS?

This is quite hard to say, at least you can try with namebech to see which one is the fastest

compare their EULAs :thumb:
I'd prefer DNS that would respect my privacy over speed anytime :D

kjdemuth

That namebench worked well. It said that my ISP verizon boston was 15.4% faster than comodo DNS. Of course thats like 6 ms faster. The human eye blinks approx 200-300 ms. So in the blink of an eye I can be better protected.

Cool app. Thanks for posting. Oddly enough, Google DNS is supposed to be the fastest for me.

You can try DNSBench (http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm) too. :)

Tomato firmware GUI on my Linksys router has three DNS address fields. I have the two Open DNS in the first two. If I add one of the Comodo addresses can/will it choose between the three?

It wil use the first one and only use the second one if the first one is down etc.

I still find clearcloud dns the best DNS in blocking bad websites. Second is Norton DNS.

Hi:

Actually in the youtube video tests of new comodo, norton and clearcloud DNS malware protection tests I seen showed that clearcloud was the winner. Compared to the test from all the malware links tested New comodo DNS failed on all, Norton DNS missed 2 malware sites and clear cloud by sunbelt blocked everyone of the links and passed 100% (winner). So if you want a good DNS then I suggest try it.
clearcloud DNS: (http://clearclouddns.com/)
74.118.212.1
74.118.212.2

Youtube tests from yesterday test
Norton vs clearcloud DNS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lNTd3MVD6M
Norton vs comodo DNS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9M-gCBufGk&feature=channel

funkydude

You can put it in both it doesn't matter.

Reading this thread piqued my interest.
I've bypassed Comodo SecureDNS in favor of Sunbelt ClearCloud.

So far, so good.
I have it running in IE 7 which is running in Sandboxie 3.46 with no problems and no system slowdown that I'm aware of.
Several sites have already been blocked. Very cool !

I'll try Comodo SecureDNS in a few days, but as for now, I tend to trust Sunbelt over Comodo when it comes to security software.
