I use linksys and I like it pretty well. At the link (http://www.linksys.com/tech_helper/intro.html) you will find some info on router setup and use.

Linux server between your modam and switch. Floppy based, harddisk installed, plenty to choose from. Mine is a mail and webserver as well ;D

I assume you're talking about cabled routers, not wireless? (Wireless routers sometimes can be problematical and also need to be secured so you don't find you're hosting a bunch of other users. ;) )
Linksys is very popular and I probably initially would have gone with that, but out of curiosity I picked up a D-Link 604 I came across at Office Max since it was $20 (after rebate) and it does the job. Very easy to set up. You can get some deals on sales if you look around before you buy, whatever brand you choose.
Not to shill for another board but there are specific forums at BroadbandReports.com for Linksys, D-Link and other routers just in case you want to check them out.

Simple Live CD running, with config and rule set on floppy for access.
Running knoppix.
Then a nice little linksys with firewall rules wich can be configure.

Done that already. But for reasons i wont go into, this setup isn't too ideal.

Another vote for the di-604. Really cheap, and (for me) really works.
No problems whatsoever with it. Not much configurability, but does the job well.

In the Other Firewalls Sticky Posts and Other Useful Links (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=24415) you will find some links with basic information on routers that may be helpful.
