View Full Version : Does Windows Update store data on my machine in support of "Resume?"

Since Windows Update has Resume support, it must save the data to a cache somewhere on my machine. Am I correct in this assumption? If so, does anyone know where it's located in Vista? I'd like to see how much data is stored in it if there is such a thing.

Also, is there a point at which the data expires?

Thank you.

The contents inside “SoftwareDistribution” folder are record date about the system updates installed, and cannot be removed or deleted. However, it’s possible to delete files inside “Download” folder which are the source setup files downloaded.

Nice! I wonder if there is a way to move the directory FileRepository and have the move reflected by a change in the Registry?

Well to answer my own question, no there isn't a way to do this Globally. I've searched the registry and found only a small amount of entries that use this install path. Most of the entries were items I do not use on this laptop such as printer, modem etc.. I still may move this to another HD for safe storage for a just in case and delete this folder contents. When I installed Win 7 I had one drive with XP installed on it. I really didn't figure that I would like Win 7 as much as I do. Long story short, I shrunk the drive which has XP on it by about 17 gigs and made a new partition with that space and installed Win 7 to the new partition. In looking back now, I wish that I had shrunk the drive more considering I had enough space to make the new Win 7 partition a little bit bigger.

Just an update on this, The tip to reclaim up to a gig or more space from the FileRepository directory is a fable. It appears that this directory is nothing more than a place holder just like the winsxs directory.
