View Full Version : SpywareBlaster 3.1 released!

SpywareBlaster 3.1 has been released!
New in this version:
-Restricted Sites Protection
-Mozilla/Firefox Protection
-A brand-new interface
-And many, many other new features and changes!
This 3.1 release provides bug fixes and enhanced performance.
The Mozilla/Firefox protection should now correctly detect profiles for Mozilla 1.7 & Firefox 0.8 and up.
NEW UPDATING OPTIONS IN SPYWAREBLASTER 3.1
SpywareBlaster still offers the built-in Check for Updates feature. This feature is completely free and allows you to keep up-to-date by clicking on a button in the SpywareBlaster interface.
SpywareBlaster 3.1 now offers SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate - a brand-new updating solution. Just set it up, and AutoUpdate will check at every system boot for the latest updates and enable the newest protection (other options are available).
As much as we would like to provide auto-updating functionality for free, bandwidth costs are simply too great to make it feasible. AutoUpdate functionality is $9.95 (US) per year, which helps to cover the bandwidth costs. The Check for Updates function remains completely free, as does SpywareBlaster. You only need to pay if you wish to have the extra convenience of AutoUpdate.
Download the latest version here: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Enjoy! ;D

Please try this download site:

If it still doesn't work trying pressing F5 or CTRL+F5 to refresh the page - it's possible your browser is caching an old version.

Hello! I tried to DL SWB-3.1, But it DL'ed v.3.0 (TWICE !!!). I hit the Ctrl+F5 before attempting the DL. It showed the DL page for 3.1, so I DL'ed it (after Un-Installing v.3.0, of course). After it went through the entire set-up, it showed as v.3.0 !!! After, deleting the program, and cache, and cookies, and recycle bin (etc.), I went through the whole procedure again!!!
Unfortunately, I ended up with the same results again!!! So, as it stands, I have a newly downloaded SWB v.3.0 with the last update showing as "3-28-04".
SO . . . . . . . . . . WHAT'S UP ? ? ?
Thank You for your help !

I had to completely remove the version 3.0 (Add/Remove)to install 3.1. I did not have to do this with the 3.0 version orignailly.
After removing 3.0, 3.1 installed with no problems.

Thank You! I'll give it a try. I did Go through the "Add/Delete" program on my computer before i attempted both downloads before. I don't know if I'll be able to complete the entire process again before this Board goes "dark".
Wish me luck !

THANK YOU ! ! !
That worked GREAT !
When I saw the "31" in the download/set-up file, I knew I was home FREE !
{ Maybe putting the version number as part of the DL file would be a pretty good idea ALL the time ! }
Again, Thank You very much !
I look forward to the l o n g a w a i t e d update for SpyWareGuard sometime soon !!!

Hi
Was wondering if before installing new version of Spyware Blaster 3.1, is it recommended that we first disable all protection for IE protection, restricted sites, & Firefox protection in v3.0 first? Then delete Spyware Blaster 3.0? Finally, Should we then also delete the Spyware Blaster 3.0 folder (if there is one after delete of 3.0)? Thanks so much.

Hi,
There are other bug fixes in the 3.1 version, including fixes in the Restricted Sites feature and updating. Plus some minor performance enhancements.
The way the programs are set up, you won't be able to get updates with the old 3.0 version, so updating is the only way to go. But I recommend updating anyway because of the reasons mentioned above. :)

I have win98, and installed version 3.1, but, it won't start: when I try to start it, there's a popup which says "unexpected error", and nothing else happens. The same thing happened with version 3.1, but not with previous versions.

I just downloaded and insalled version3.1 which, unlike version3.0, ran like charm on win98SE.
It appears you have solved the problem of why version3.0 would not run on Win98, at least for my setup.

There appears to still be an issue with Firefox 0.8 protection.
On 1 machine running Mozilla 1.5, selecting protection created a hostperm.1 file in the Mozilla Profile folder.
On a different machine running Firefox 0.8, with protection enabled, there was no hostperm.1 file written anywhere.
Both machines running WinME.

Is there any place to get 3.0 back again? I keep getting an error 14 -out of string space pop up with the new version. Am running Win98se and pretty sure the problem is not lack of ram or hard drive. Had no problem with the earlier version. Also I am using Mozilla 1.7. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I did a clean install of 3.1 as well. Hope I have given all the information someone might need to point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance. Linda

Not here! Poor v3.1 can't get past startup before Windows announces a "problem" which it doesn't specify. So 3.1 joins 3.0 as unusable in this machine: Mac 10.3.3/Virtual PC 6.1/WinXP with all updates installed. Yuk. Tried everything mentioned so far.

I did remove all protection and registry entries before un-installing 2.6.1 though...could be the solution ??

Hi,
Just replaced SB-3.0 with 3.1. Now when I fire up SB it takes fully 13 minutes to load the protection data. The majority of the time is is taken up by loading the mozilla data.
Is this long loading time expected or have I done something wrong? 3.0 loading was much faster.
ENV: Win98se, Mozilla 1.6
Thanks

Whoa! Something isn't right there.
When you say the majority of the time is spent when it's loading the mozilla data, is that as it is determining how many items are protected/unprotected? (i.e. after the green progress bar stops moving, but as the "Data loading..." messages are being replaced with "0 items unprotected")
Also, how many Mozilla profiles do you currently have? Have you created/removed lots of profiles?
Thanks,

SpywareBlaster may take a bit to verify protection for Mozilla/Firefox, but it certainly shouldn't take 13 minutes. ???
A few more questions for you:
Have you ever installed a version of Firefox?
How fast is your computer's processor?
Can you also check under C:\Windows\Profiles\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla and see how large the registry.dat file is?
(At the same time, please check to see if "Firefox" and "Phoenix" folders exist under that Application Data folder.) Thanks! :)
EDIT: And a little notice: SpywareBlaster's Mozilla protection will only work with Mozilla 1.7 and up (not 1.6, unfortunately - there were some major changes in the 1.7 version, and since that will be the new long-lived stable branch I decided to go ahead and support it - there's a very stable beta version available now).

{QUOTE-> SpywareBlaster may take a bit to verify protection for Mozilla/Firefox, but it certainly shouldn't take 13 minutes. ???
-Javacool <-QUOTE}
Things have changed since last post.
First I deleted my netscape 7.1 thinking that this may be a problem. Mozilla 1.6 continued to work well.
Re-ran SB but this time it did not find Mozilla and thus no protection for it.
When SB was fired up it gave me a blank dialog box which persisted for about 4 minutes. Then it loaded IE and Restricted protection and did not detect Mozilla (1.6 at that time).
After reading you post I replaced M-1.6 with M-1.7b. I uninstalled and reinstalled SB. SB performace was the same as described above (4 minute wait before display and could not find mozilla 1.7b.
Then enabling "all" protection took the same 4 minutes and of course no Moziilla protection.
Now to respond:
Q: SpywareBlaster may take a bit to verify protection for Mozilla/Firefox, but it certainly shouldn't take 13 minutes. ???
A: Yes now it may be faster but Mozilla was not found.
Q: Have you ever installed a version of Firefox?
A: No.
Q: How fast is your computer's processor?
A: 800 MHz
Q: Can you also check under C:\Windows\Profiles\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla and see how large the registry.dat file is?
A: There is *no* registry.dat file there. Also C:\Windows...\<username> is the only folder and is different from the profile name being used by mozilla. ?????
Q:(At the same time, please check to see if "Firefox" and "Phoenix" folders exist under that Application Data folder.) Thanks! :)
A: No.

Well, here goes...again,
Neither 3.0 nor 3.1 will run on my XP system. Couldn't be because I'm running XP on Virtual PC for Mac (Mac OS 10.3.3). Old 2.6.1 worked fine.
The error message says only that Windows has encountered a "problem" with SB and has shut it down immediately. The details window adds nothing new.
I'm using the full retail version of XP Home. All protection is disabled and all previous evidence of SB trashed before installing 3.1 several times over before giving up again.
Any ideas would be most appreciated. SB is one essential program!

Actually, the problem probably is caused by you running Win XP under Virtual PC for Mac.
Let me see if I can find a Mac machine around here (with Virtual PC), and test it out. I may be able to come up with a solution for you.

Greetings All,
I just installed this latest version and since then I have been unable to log into my ICQ email. Is there any chance that this could have been caused by the new update? I have been trying now for four days to find out why I can't log on but to no avail. I am not at all sure that it is the update that is causing the problem but none of my other email sites, I have 5 more, are having any problems and I have cleared all the usual cookies, temp internet files and index.dat but nothing will allow me to log on! It seems that my computer may not be accepting the cookie from ICQ but I can't locate which one on the list in Spyware Blocker is causing the problem. Any help appreciated.

I am using version 3.1 now. It seems to be a very good software program. But I would like to offer one suggestion. It would be very helpfull if the program had a search function so a person could type in a name of a spyware threat like "cws.googlems.3" then the program would check and see if that spyware was in its data base and being blocked.
I am saying all this because I also use PestPatrol on my system. When I last ran that program it found "cws.googlems.3" on my computer, I removed it off my system, then went to SpywareBlaster to see if I would be protected from furture attacks. But their was no easy way to look through all the spyware that your program protests from. I still do not know if I am protected from "cws.googlems.3".
You are providing a very much needed service to us internet users, keep up the good work!

Well..it looks to me like my Spywareblaster career is over
I didn't realise I had to uninstall my 2.6 first, and I got an error message saying
that either my hard drive was damaged, or there was a virus around
Then I thought.."maybe I should have uninstalled first"
So I used 'add/remove'
Then installed 3.1
Same error message
I re-installed 2.6 (but of course the database is way old, and of course, I now cannot update, unless I use 3.1)
2.6 opened normally, as I have come to rely on
One attempt at loading 3.1 was successful without the error message, until I tried to open it the following day, to update the database

I had no issues with any past releases, including 3.0, but ver. 3.1 DOES NOT recognize Mozilla (1.6) or Firefox, so the protection is disabled. How about a fix?????? :'(

{QUOTE-> Greetings All,
I just installed this latest version and since then I have been unable to log into my ICQ email.

Subsequent to the last post I have now had the chance to log in from my work computer and there is no problem. I really do think that SpywareBlaster has caused me to be unable to log on to ICQmail. It will be a problem for anyone using the ICQemail site and SWBlaster, I have tried disabling all protection etc, but still cannot get in. Anyone got any ideas?

Hmm, I have reread my post and realized that I have not made it clear that it is my home computer that is faulty. I have a dual boot Win98SE and Win2k with the latest version of SWBlaster on each, I am now virtually certain that it is this latest version that has caused the problem certainly the last version worked fine. Only Icqmail is unattainable, I use 5 other sites. I have checked my Hosts file and tried everything I can think of. Soon I will un-install SWBlaster if no-one comes up with a solution.

Hi,
If you disabled SpywareBlaster's protection there should have been nothing left on your system that could have even potentially caused such a conflict, so I would suspect SpywareBlaster is not the cause here.
Have you installed or configured anything else recently?

;D 2.4 GHZ., P-4, 512 MB ram, HP home, IE 6, NAV, Spybot 1.2 and Spywareblaster 3.1

Right, a number of times I have disabled all of the protection and then gone into Restricted Sites and found that I cannot delete the sites there, they always come back, I think these are the restricted sites from SWBlaster. I have two operating systems exhibiting the same problem although they are on separate partitions on the hard drive, I installed the new version of SWBlaster on both of them, then the problem started. The only new thing I have installed, and that is on only one partition is Jumbled Letters. Anyway no rush, I don't see why you can't open an ICQ email and see if you have the problem, I will attempt to put SWBlaster onto another computer that still gets into my ICQ email and see if it causes the problem.
I am in no real hurry to fix this although it is inconvenient not to be able to use the account from my home computer.
Regards Robert.

Wondering if a small annoyance could be addressed. After updating one has to go into each XP profile to "enable all protection". Would it be possible for a future product update to address this and make it so when you "enable all protection" it is across the board and not just for the profile you are currently on? Thanks.

I have windows 98SE and have used Spywareblaster(Great Product) for quite a long period of time - I have never had any problems until version 3.1. I have hispeed cable connection (sorry to join the list of folks having problems)
I use Netscape 7 and also IE 6 Browsers....
Tried all download sites with both browsers - didn't download.
Finally using Net 7 It downloaded after 14-15 minutes.
Install took about 20 minutes
To load protection took about 20-25 minutes
Now it won't work - I get a white window which will load after about 19-20 minutes and spyblaster appears but nothing will work.
I have uninstalled and will be checking in on the forums to see if anything gets resolved.

SB 3.1 eventually came up, when I let it run, and enabled all protection after about 13 minutes. Still takes about that long to start up fully whenever I run it.

Just wanted to tell you that your very prog SpywareBlaster is the very very coolest software on earth that's been created in the last few years. First, a big (cannot be big enough:-) thankyou fellow.
It may sound a bit exaggerated, but to me you're quite a genius and a very smooth one.
I am using SpywareBlaster since (almost since) it's very first publishing date.
And I've changed my PC's and operating systems twice since then.
It all works beautifully, and I think your idea of having only to pay for automatically scheduled updating could well have been a hint at some commercial antivirus software producers...Still, there is one, and if I'm right, a not so very bad one. :-) I really don't want to advertise somebody but there is one: (hit me) of course you all might know it already, but I think this is the time and place:
http://www.avup.de/personal/en/avwinsfx.exe
Altough this is principally a commercial company, I appreciate that forestep into not have to pay and still get actual databases.
That is kind of weird in our days.
Thank you (both) so much.
And (repeating some other user's question):
will there be an updated version of SpywareGuard as well?
I am sure it would become another opus magnum on the scene....
Thank you and now...good night

I have seen my problem mentioned earlier, but cannot seem to find any replies addressing this exact problem. My 3.0 version worked perfectly, but 3.1 gives me a message "Run-time error '14'. Out of string space" when I try to open it. I then click "OK" and the program closes. As a result some rather nasty spyware was installed on my C drive last week. Luckily my Spybot program is working correctly and it was able to detect and delete the offending files.
I am running Win98se, 1.6 AMD processor, 512MB ram. I use Netscape 7.0 and Internet Explorer 6.0. I also had an old version of Netscape 4.7 installed and I have uninstalled it in an attempt to clear up this problem but this made no difference. My registry.dat file is a WHOPPING 182MB!!! I can't even open it - wordpad attempts to read the file, but when it reaches about 20 or 21% it starts over at 0% and ultimately I have to control-alt-delete (it shows that wordpad is not responding) and "end task". Earlier posts do not make it clear if it is safe to delete the registry.dat file.
Please help if you can! I was so happy with the 3.0 version, now I feel lost!

Dear Javacool:
I've uninstalled first the Spywareblaster 2.6.1 and then I downloaded the Sp. 3.1 and a message appears as this : "the file is damaged; may be a virus or another problem". I run by Windows 98 SE. I have read the problem probably would be the Windows 98, I dont know.
Please send me an answer and a solution for me. My e-mail is:

Well for what it is worth ... uninstalled the 2.1 version without a problem, installed 3.1 - all is well and running smoothly [touch wood, so far!]. No problem getting the updates either. Am running WindowsXP, 512RAM and 100GB Hard-drive, on high speed cable; Avast 4 Home Ed.; ZAP; new version of SpyBot; Ad-Aware, spywareguard; IE-Spyad; IE - no conflicts detected so far. 8) Just thought you might like to hear from someone that is thumbs up!

Still the same problem : "This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus. Please reinstall it."
I followed the hijackthis procedure indicated before for another purpose without outcome.
So my question is:
- is there any way to download the old version (I have deleted it) ?
- if not is there a substituable freeware availlable ?
Thanks from a spywareblaster orphan !

The files the are missing are probably those needed to complete the Visual Basic Runtime environment, or a couple files that need properly registration. These are documented on the FAQ page right on the main SpywareBlaster site itself. See this page:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloadfaq.html
These files are not included in the SpywareBlaster kit as they are available from Microsoft or other places, and they are best pulled directly from them, though Javacool does provide a needed files kit, too.

I do not like the 3.1 version of SpywareBlaster. Version 2.6.1 was MUCH better and did not have the slick commercial fluff GUI that 3.1 does. Not going to complain too very much, as the proggie is a freebie, but I have been using it since version 2 and sadly, recently decided to delete version 3.1, as it was causing certain web sites to hang, or load erratically, which tells me there are still a lot of bugs in this *new* version?!
I also tried and subsequently deleted SpywareGuard, as it has the same problem, in that it always seems to operate very erratically on Win98SE.
I would never upgrade to XP, as it's **Crap/Spy/Mal/Intrusive-ware to the extreme!

It seems your 98SE system quite possibly has a few problems of which you have not learned. This 98SE system runs just fine with SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and many other programs running at the same time AND only 50% system resources free even as this is being written! Just let us know your particulars and perhaps someone here can assist. :)

I do have a question, though. In a previous thread, instructions were given for downloading manual updates to 2.6.1. Well, the download location where those files reside now contains some compressed, encrypted, and/or corrupted files.
Where can I now get manual updates for 3.1 Our firewall blocks the in-program update, and I've tried all the options in SpywareBlaster.

Hi:
I d/l and installed SB ver 3.1, restarted my comp, clicked on the SB icon and computer hung. I d/l first patch, restarted comp, clicked on icon and computer hung. I d/l second patch, restarted comp, clicked on icon and you guessed it, computer hung but this time I could end task. I then disabled Norton's personal firewall and anti virus software, clicked on SB icon and again computer hung. Each time SB opened but I got a box with white screen -- No Gui and no error messages. So a box opens with nothing in it and I have to end task.
Only thing I can do now is to uninstall the program unless someone has more suggestions. As I mentioned in the title I am running win98se (on a PentII/400 with 384 RAM).

I haven't seen this problem discussed yet, so I'll lay it out for assistance:
I used 2.6.1 with no problems. I dl 3.1 with no problems. I took the snapshot of my system before I starting monkeying around with it, then made some changes. Restarted the computer, with no problems, but could not access the internet. Clicked on "restore to original settings" button and restarted the computer again, but still no joy. Even though I tried to get back to the original configuration, it didn't work. I installed 3.1 right over top of 2.6.1 without unstalling 2.6.1. I'm using XP, 1.5Gb 512Ram 40M hd cable modem. Now I have uninstalled 3.1, thinking that might cure the problem.
Got any ideas? I will admit I did not give it 13 minutes to work, but I guess I could launch it and then go buy some dog food for my Great Dane. Help!

Doesn't work. That's what I just said...those files pointed to by that thread are corrupt, compressed, or just flat wrong.
The sizes are wrong, they're binary crap (as opposed to text) when looking at them, and it doesn't matter whether one right-clicks and saves or just clicks on the links and saves from there.
They don't work.
Care to zip up the real files and put a few links on the actual javacool page?

I too am having difficulty with version 3.1 taking forever to load and determine the protection status. I have read in earlier threads that the size of the registry.dat file may be the culprit. My work computer has a file size of 67,572,310 which for earlier threads qualifies as abnormally large. I have not seen any direction as what the solution is to this problem. Can I simply delete the registry.dat file? I am using Netscape 7.1 which references Mozilla/5.0. Any help would be most appreciated.

Deleting that registry.dat file will indeed fix the issue - you may, however, lose your custom profile settings (if you've made any) in Netscape.

Hi Folks,
I have done it all, everything I have read on these posts about installing Spyblaster. First I was hit by the SASSER and finally got that thing cleaned up. At the Same time I was hit by about:Blank and the Famous Cool Web Search. I have finally got them under control. I have Ad a Ware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyguard, But for the life of me I cannot get the Spyblaster to run. I get the same error "That Spyblaster is Damaged and my hard drive is damaged, bad sector or I have a virus Please reinstall it. Nothing shows up. I have run Nortons 2003 with Live Updates, McCaffees Stinger, Every worm tool out there (almost) and CW Shredder. I have Hijack this, and nothing is showing up there. I also have not been able to download the Sasser fix from Microsoft on their critical update. I just don't know what else to do. As I have said, I have tried everything on this post to get it to work. I have XP Professional Home, IE 6.0. I have all the latest Windows updates (except one). Can anyone tell me what to do or what to check now? There is nothing left. That I can see. Has Spyguard fixed the missing files that I was told in another post that they were having troubles with, when people are downloading it? I have tried every site that offers Spyguard with the same results as above. I have removed it, dozens of times already. PLEASE HELP, OR I GUESS I WILL JUST HAVE TO BLOW IT OFF.
THANK YOU...TO WHOMEVER HELPS ME.

Hi group,
Have any of you had experience installing SpywareBlaster on a Windows 2000 server running Terminal Services? I performed a small test on an app server running Windows 2000 that has 5 Windows 98 clients that connect using remote desktop & it seemed to install ok. I'm wondering if the parts of the registry it protects are HKLM AND HKCU? I wouldn't think that it would have to be installed by each user to gain full protection would it?
Are there any concerns on a server?
We have a server farm with users connecting from thin clients using Citrix. We have had a few brushes with Internet parasites, Browser Hijackers, etc & would like to protect against them.

A little help would be much appreciated. I installed AdAware 6.0, updated it, and it worked well. I installed SpyBot Search & Destroy, updated it, and it worked well. I installed SpyWare guard v 2.2.0. It works well but I can never get the definitions updated. The SG LiveUpdate eventually fails (appears to timeout) with no error message or code returned. Also, I downloaded SpyWare Blaster 3.1 and installed it. A very odd error occures when I try to run it. I get this error message "This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive ...." I have downloaded it a couple different times from both JavaCool and other mirrors. The file name is "spywareblastersetup31.exe", file properties indicate version 3.1.0., size is 2215 KB. I have Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise running as a virus detector with up to date definitions and a scan shows no virus infections. (sorry to be long winded).
1) Can anyone figure out why I cant update the SpyWare Guard definitions.
2) Any idea why SpyWare Blaster fails to start?
Thanks in advance.. Lance

What is the windows process/service associated with SpywareBlaster3.1? The only exectuable I could find is the spywareblaster.exe process. However, when I close out of the program the process terminates. I would like to confirm that after I "enable all protection" and close out that the program is still actually protecting my box.
Does anyone know the specific process that does this please? THANKS!

Hi Mike, ;)
SpywareBlaster works by placing Kill bits in your registry ...
ie. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internet settings\zonemap\domains\searchsquire.com
Value is 4
which blocks the domain/software ... so SB 3.1 only needs to run to add these registry keys ... the keys inturn protect you.
Sorry, I couldn't word it better ... I hope this makes sense. :)

Dog...
thanks for the reply..
I verified that I do have that key with a value of 4. However, I guess my questions now would be... if all the program does when it runs (or when the spywareblaster.exe process is active) is create this key with a value of 4, my next questions would be...
1) why don't I just create this manually and not install the program (hypothetically would this protect my pc?)
2) I am confused as to how the database works into this..Each time a user runs an update there has to be a list of possible threats that is updated. Don't you need a process to read this list and enforce the prevention of creating new (malicious) registry keys?

Hi Mike, ;)
Yes, you could insert your own kill bits ... theorethically, but how would you go about doing all the research, SB database is extensive and a culmination of a lot of work and expertise/experience. It's all provided in a very nice package ... free of charge thanks to Javacool - minus donations ... as serves space comes at a price and Javacool's deserves a donation to help with his costs and any excess for his efforts. This statement is only my opinion, donations are NOT required, but appreciated.
As to updates ... new items added to the database, are separated by SB when downloaded and it adds the new reg. keys as required. It's not designed to protect your registry per say ... only to prevent the addition of known malware reg. keys., Active X etc.
To protect your registry in general you can use Spybot 1.3 ... which employs it's teatimer.exe to monitor registry changes, or DiamondCS regprot, which does the same, I use both. I'll post the links below.
Hope that helps. ;)
dog - *puppy*
*edit* I re-read your post ... the example key I posted was just one of 2942 in the database ... there isn't a single fix all entry so to speak ... there are many ... and the database is regularly added to. Sorry if I misunderstood what you wrote and I hope this helps.

Hi Mike, ;)
Here's the Links.
Spybot 1.3 (http://spybot.eon.net.au/index.php?page=download)
DiamondCS (http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=products) Freeware located on the second half of the page ... lots of useful tools ... RegistryProt is what I mentioned above.

Dog... THANKS a lot for the info and informative links! They were very helpful.. I agree about the donations too. I just want to better understand first and feel confident that any freeware is even doing anything for me before I donate.
Unfortunately, I am still somewhat confused as to how a "kill bit" actually works within the registry. If anyone is out there who actually works on SpywareBlaster, it would nice to have the option to be prompted when a kill bit action occurs. (Pardon my terminology here.. just not familiar with kill bits) I imagine this may get to be quite anoying though.
This would let users, who want to be alerted of this , know that the program is actually working in the background although there is no active process associated with it. Just a suggestion though.. and hey.. this is "free" so I really don't want to come across the wrong way because I am grateful that there are talented people out there helping end users, myself included, freely use the internet without having to worry; as much.. ;)
In basic terms though...SpywareBlaster 3.1 solely prevents the addition of malicious reg keys, while the other programs Dog mentioned, appear to perform both removal and some prevention of malicious processes, reg entries monitoring (both good and bad... for the Spybot teatimer) ... does this sound right?

Hi Mike, :)
This link will explain KIll Bits better ... Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q240797&ID=KB;EN-US;Q240797)
Another of Javacool's products provides "active" protection = Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html) and works inconjunction with SB 3.1.
The teatimer and regprot ... more than anything notify you of any registry change ... giving you the option to allow or deny it ... again I use both, they're both great proggies.
Spybot immunize feature also works similarly to SB 3.1 in blocking known bad CLSID, works in conjunction with SB (you'll see this if you run immunize in spybot) it also reconizes that SB's database is more extensive ... so in effect Patrick also reconizes and commends Javacools work ... so to speak.
To clean your registry safely ... old/invaild enteries you could use something like regseeker ... available Here (http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm)
This is the official Javacool Support Forum ... Javacool is always checking in and answers questions ... he will probable respond with an answer ... so check back to see.

Yes, I have all those proggies installed ... including Norton & teatimer ... No problems at all. Regprot is great too! You'll find lots of useful proggies on this site as well as http://www.wilders.org ... G'day there!
Hope someone can help me. I just installed and ran SpywareBlaster 3.1. I've been having trouble with spam and hijackers, so in the last two weeks, I've installed AdAware, Spybot S&D, and this one.
(I have to mention I'm a newbie, so please be patient!)
After it finished running I looked in my IE Browser Pages, and I've recognised the addresses of porn sites I have in my restricted sites on my HD!
One was a page I've been having trouble with lately. It's been popping up at any time.
It stated "This item is a Search Assistant related item for the Local Machine Search Assistant."
This address appears 4 times!
Another one looks like a variant of that address, it appears twice.
Also there are two files I recognise as another popup porn site.
It states: "This item is the Local Machine's Default_Page_URL", and "This item is the Local Machine's homepage, or start page."
I did have trouble with them until I added them in my restricted sites a while ago. I scanned for them and they were gone. Now they're back again? I don't understand how that could be. I couldn't find where to delete them...can anyone enlighten a computer illiterate idjit please?
Thanks in advance,
Lacey ;)

You said to post if you have any problems. I do! ???
I downloaded 3.1 without a problem. However, when I attempted to install, I get the message as follows:
"C:\WINNT\system32\MSINET.OCX
An error occurred when trying to replace the existing file:
DeleteFile Failed: code 32
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. Abort Retry Cancel."
I've tried several times with nothing but Win2K running, and can't get past this. Do I have to be logged on with Admin authority to accomplish this? What is the MSINET.OCX anyway? Why are you deleting it?

I too saw something strange: the last update is from '04-05-18 and updating dat files from my 3.1-version seems to have a fake-connect without visibility.
Because i did not trust the update function, i did not reload the 3.1 version.
I have not seen a 3.0 vs after i have installed 3.1 without problems.
But if something like CWShredder is not updated enough (against 'coolweb' stuff) maybe it cleans something to get your SWB updated?

Alohas from Hawaii...I've searched all over the forum, but I can't find anyone with a similar problem that I've had when I installed Spywareblaster & SpywareGuard. This is what I'm running on my PC:
XP Pro with Logitech diNovo Bluetooth Keyboard, Media Pad & Mouse and Spysweeper along with Norton Anti-Virus and Norton System Utilities...
When I installed Spywareblaster & SpywareGuard, it installed without any problems, but when I rebooted my PC, it hangs up for a bit and then it doesn't load up some of my startup programs like "BTT Tray" Used for my bluetooth devices, Norton System Utilities, and Spysweeper. I ran Norton System Utilities to see if it could have fixed the problem, but no luck. I get the same problem with I restart my PC. Had no choice, but to do a System Restore. I've got it to work with my PC at the office, but my home PC didn't like it. Can anyone help me find a solution? Mahalos in advance.

Hi Javacool,
I only now tried to install 3.1
Sorry, I know how hard you work on your programs (and it is very much appreciated!!!), but I've got the same error message as some others.
Windows 98 SE Dutch, IE 5.5 SP2, P3 600, 512 MB RAM.
I had 2.6.1 installed.
Maybe I did something wrong....
Disconnected from the net, disabled AV, rebooted, closed all apps near the clock and in Contrl-Alt-Del except Explorer and Systray, deleted applog, run WindowWasher and MRUBlaster, did a quick scandisk, uninstalled version 2.6.1, deleted existing SpywareBlaster dir, installed 3.1, rebooted, started 3.1 and the error-message came-up.
MD5 checksum of the installation file:
The file <D:\SpywareBlaster\Version 3_1\spywareblastersetup31.exe> has the following Checksum(s)
MD5 - BFC312A531FCFCA5205FE385177CC5EA
As far as I know I don't have Viruses, Trojans, spyware on my system.
I will later run NISFileCheck and ADinf32 Pro to see what has been changed.
Thanks, keep up the good work !!!

ignat,
That error generally occurs following a particular type of spyware occurrence on a PC. Take a look at this thread, but more importantly within the first response in that thread is a link to a lengthy thread where users have found various solutions to the problem. But, most of those solutions are complex so you may want to wait until Javacool finds an automated fix.

The Mozilla/Firefox crew changed a few things in their latest Firefox version (0.9), including the default profile directory.
SpywareBlaster 3.2, which I'm working on finishing right now, will add support for Firefox 0.9. :) (I can't estimate when it will be publically available, as it still will have to go through some testing, but I hope to have it out soon.)

That error is usually a sign of a prior spyware infection that still needs to be cleaned off a system. It is explained more in this three-page thread:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=26534
Within that thread are many user supplied fixes and work-arounds for this problem. And on the third page is a link to a German site that offers a file download that may automatically fix the problem. (It's near a 100% solution if you first download, install and update Ad-aware to latest levels, run a full Ad-aware scan first then immediately run the download fix file from that site.) So it may take a little research and work to resolve this yourself. Also, Javacool has said is trying to code something into SpywareBlaster so that it can compensate for this type of condition (infection, or whatever it is) automatically. But we'll have to wait for the next version to see what he can do to address this.

{QUOTE-> SpywareBlaster 3.1 has been released!
Enjoy! ;D

Can you please tell me if the Spywarebuster runs as soon as I turn on the computer or do I have to start it each time after log on?
Thanks!

Hi Hawk, ;)
No, Spyware Blaster isn't a running process ... once you enable protection, it adds Kill Bits to your registry to Block "Bad" Active X controls, it also prevents Spyware Tracking cookies in IE, Mozilla, and Firefox (currently doesn't work with FireFox 0.9 - because they changed the default directory for it)
All you have to do to is .... check for updates weekly ... when there is a new update, select enable all protection ... that's it, it's that simple ... It's an outstanding little program ...

Spyware, adware, browser hijackers, and dialers are some of the fastest-growing threats on the Internet today. By simply browsing to a web page, you could find your computer to be the brand-new host of one of these unwanted fiends!
The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer. SpywareBlaster can help keep your system spyware-free and secure, without interfering with the "good side" of the web.
And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background. <-QUOTE}
Javacool has another program ... Spyware Guard 2.2 ... that offers active protection and works hand in hand with Spyware Blaster ... you can find out more about it HERE (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html)
Javacool has many other great programs available here's a link to the Products Page (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/products.html)

I installed this yesterday and it appeared to work fine. When I booted up today it wasn't running. Does it have to go into startup to configure automatically?
Yesterday when I closed the program it indicated it was working and appeared on the toolbar/status bar. Today when I close it....nothing.
Recommendations?
Also, can this work with my Netscape browser as I don't use the I.E. Thank you

I was also wondering if SpywareBlaster would be affected by SpyBot Search & Destroy which is another helpful program I use? And if so, how? ???

No, SpywareBlaster works very well with Spybot Search & Destroy. In fact they complement each other for maximum protection.

Hi all.... I just encountered a problem with my computer... It seems that after I got this spyware problem, I was going to use spyware blaster to deal with it...But who knows when i wanted to open the Spyware Blaster program, it says that the file is damaged by a certain virus or whatever... So I decided to dowload this program again and reinstall it... But it seems that the same problem still occured... From my opinion I actually thought that the spyware must have done something to this program causing it not to function... So can anyone help me here? Thanks

Hi lazenca :)
Welcome to Wilders.
U are right, it is indeed the cause of a CWS infection.
There is a very long thread on this subject here,
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=26534
there is a fix that has been working for some people on page #3, posted by JackAttack.
Hope this helps.

Just installed Mozilla Firefox 0.9.1. SpywareBlaster 3.1 didn't recognize it. Uninstalled/reinstalled SpywareBlaster 3.1; same result. Running Windows XP Home with IE uninstalled. Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Hi jcarole, ;)
Welcome to Wilders' ;)
This is a known issue ... they changed the default directory in the 0.9 + versions so SB 3.1 doesn't detect it ... SB 3.2 will correct this issue, Javacool has mention it will be release shortly.

Hello
We are looking at this great product for our college, because of the amount of spyware that gets installed by users.
We know the product is free for educational use, but we want to enable the auto-update feature per machine in the college. Do we have to buy a key for every machine in the college (which is 700+) or is there a special educational site licence available?
Does anyone know or can help?

The instructions in the thread listed below still don't work correctly. The files come out corrupted or compressed in some way.
Is there a working manual update solution?

Are you copying, moving or saving those file into your spyware blaster folder? To overwrite the existing ones.
What error exactly are you getting? (regarding coruption)
