View Full Version : Google Search Sidebar

Many users worldwide have made countless complaints on Forum`s and other sites about the "experimental" Google LH sidebar that comes up on all search screens. It has been inflicted on selected users, probably all those with a Google toolbar and there is no provision made for us to hide it.

Consequently, users including myself have got very angry at having this waste of space dumped on our screens. Google say that there is no way to get rid of it. But there is, the world is full of clever people and Cyber Surgeons independent of Google.

Many solutions have been put forward on the net from using Greasemonkey and JS script to cobbled up add-ons. None of them work overall, some work for some (so they say) and most do not.

David Rubin has recently designed an add-on that is currently experimental BUT installing it is easy with no problems and IT DOES WORK !

For all those users plagued by this compulsory Google search LH sidebar, go to Mozilla Add-ons for Firefox, download "Google Search Tab Remover 1.02" by David Rubin. Google will then be deprived of this annoying sidebar at the expense of worldwide joy.

Until David Rubin finally releases this add-on, you may have to REFRESH the first output from the Google logo screen, but from then on - NO LH Sidebar, providing you keep searching using the output search box or the SEARCH button on the Google toolbar.
Final trimming may remove this small need.

Good luck to you all and good riddance to Google`s sidebar.

I am so sorry, I found the Add-on by simply bringing up Firefox Add-ons and thought this was adequate, but I now know that this can present a problem in finding it - I do not know why.

My information ONLY applies only to Firefox users. IE - who knows, I do not use IE ?

Try this link, it will go immediately to the Add-on :- https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/161638

After all my searches for a solution to get rid of this sidebar and finding that most of the proposals do not work, this one does, bearing in mind the manual tweak I described which is no trouble at all.
My respects to all and thank you CloneRanger for your help and prompt.

i really dont understand peoples complaints about something so minor... it doesnt interfere with ur search results, just lets u see specific types of searches better. are people really THIS terrified of change? lol... its just a sidebar to choose different types of searches, get over it. i still get all the results i had before.

OK it is a piffling issue, but is an erosion of personal choice and should have a "Hide options" button.

If you like it - KEEP IT - if you hate it - use the Davis Rubin fix.

It may be that the Googlers have only infested certain regions of the world with this plague. In which case some of your simple counter measures "may" work.

In the UK where I am, NONE of these old Google links work and neither do the cobbled up Add-ons many put forward, they are all a waste of time trying. NOTHING works except the Add-on described in my post.

Even the mighty Google who have been inundated with angry and abusive complaints on their own Forum, have stated that the sidebar CANNOT be erased or hidden until their "experiment" is concluded.

Anybody over the age of 40 can forget it, they have not got enough life-buds left.

So, no need for any feathers to fly - either love it or leave it.
I do hope that Google have not given little old me the divine distinction of being their only guinea pig on the entire planet.

The world is full of sheer brilliance. Not a lot of people know this, like Michael Caine said.

A solution to this Google sidebar plague was provided by some nutter in Looneyland out there. He proposed that to rid us of this abominable sidebar scourge we should change the language to PIRATE.

Well, I did, and all the lingo went to an "Ahrr Jim Laad" format, which I had some difficulty in understanding being a humble landlubber.

What I could not handle was walking around on one leg with a crutch, having a patch over one eye and a parrot perched on my shoulder. Apart from getting my ear pecked and not being able to go upstairs for a pee - it made the dog bark.

I'm in the UK and http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=all works fine for me. I see exactly the same in both FF and IE6 with or without cookies or scripting ;D

Well Clone - it does not work for me in the UK and I have tried everything and nothing works. I do not see the point in screen-shooting the Google search logo - I can get that any time I like, it is the first search page that has this infernal parasitic sidebar on AND there is no way of getting rid of it as per my posts.

If you care to look up the net and see all the millions of users that are plagued with this crap AND have also tried all these useless links, you will understand the magnitude of this problem.
It is not a figment of my imagination, There are millions of fellow sufferers out there, it is not a personal vendetta against Google by John Bull.

The David Rubin Add-on is the ONLY solution.

No need for any ruffled feathers, if you can get Google to play ball and hide this obnoxious autocratic sidebar by some simple fiddle, then fine. I do not give a fig, I have installed the Add-on and Google`s sidebar has been slaughtered.

All I intended in posting was to give the other millions of sufferers an easy solution to the bigoted action of Google play-gamers. I had no intention to
stir up an argument.
My final answer - TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.

We'll take that with a grain of salt. First, it is debatable if such a minor issue warrants the installation of yet another addon. Second, what this addon does has been done before, the credits belong elsewhere. Several ways to fix this - for example using Stylish and Greasemonkey scripts - are discussed here:

Yes. And, as already stated by Cudni in this tread, Proxomitron can do great on google, as always did.

Who's arguing, certainly not me, and i didn't think you were either. So i don't understand why you would say that, let alone think it ?

I never suggested or even thought that it was a figment of your imagination I believe you are having issues. If the David Rubin Add-on is the ONLY solution that works for you, then i'm Genuinely happy for you, and also glad through your posts you may have been able to help others.

The reason i keep testing google myself and posting my results, is to see if i see what you see, and i don't. Quite why there are such differences i'm not sure. Could be the way i have NoScript fully set up for eg. Most of the settings/options i have disabled in it. Out of ALL the availabilities i only enabled scripting to test, along with first party cookies.

Going past the logo to the first search page with or without scripting and first party cookies.
