ImgBurn. Free and complete, does the job very well.

However, because I rarely need it, I don't maintain it installed.

None, because it takes too much time, gives little space and burned DVDs can stop working any time. I prefer USB, external HDD, internet storage and so on.

InfraRecorder for me. Portable, simple, small (9mb on disk/usb stick).
Supports ISO R/W, format, erase, copy, data, audio, and video writing, has a true 64 bit model as well. Simply the best for everyday recording. No cover printing but that's not a big loss for me.

I used to use Nero, and really liked it until it became bloated.

I have used Deepburner for simple jobs many times.

I use cdburnerXP quite often, but it feels rather sluggish and uses a rather high amount of cpu, almost to where I don't do much else while it is burning.

I use imgburn the most, likely because I tend to do a lot with .iso files.

On a side note, since this is a burning poll, what software do you burn audio cd with. Burn mp3 to audio cd to play in car/home cd-player. I have pretty bad luck with most all media and most all software, aka I have a lot of coasters ;)

What settings are crucial? Are the "audio cds" actually different? I don't get it really, why one cd-player will really dislike most everything I burn, yet usually when someone else makes me a cd, it works perfectly. Hardware should not be the issue here. Any thoughts.

All the integrated Windows 7 Burning options: Windows DVD Burning, Windows ISO Burning Tool, Windows Media Player. Windows System RestoreDisc Tool, Windows Backup Tool.
Actually Windows 7 can burn everything I want too, I only have one issue with Windows 7 burning: burn a .divx/xvid and a subtitle file into a DVD. For that I use ConvertXtoDVD.
That is also the only thing WMP12 is really missing, proper support for subtitles. I already removed MediaMonkey from my pc and just using WMP12 for music now. But I still have to use VLC for movies with subtitles.

Before I had Windows 7 I really liked two free burning programs: BurnAware Free (there is a beta of the new version 3 out now) and InfraRecorder.

Used to be Nero but lately it's been ImgBurn, because it's light and effective, and I mostly burn iso's. Similar to Sully's situation, I guess :)

Did it do this on all media or specific "music" discs or some specific brand?

Did you use default settings? There are a number I have played with but not found any difference in success ratio.

Thanks for the info.

It can depend on several factors,to name a few:
your burner and it's firmware not supporting some media brands
burning speed to high
too many burning programs installed,conflicting/interfering with each other, for example,Alcohol 120% "ignore media type" checked
buffer underrun problems

As you see, there's plenty to check, and as there's no error correction on audiocd's,they're more sensitive than datacd's.

Hmm.
Seems I have been down this road before. Multiple hardware/software/media combinations. I dunno. Maybe I will try the suggested application and buy a few music cds to see if it helps. Or, I could just fork out for a new cd player at home and in the car I suppose ;)

Specialised empty audio cd-r's are a waste of money for your case.....they are intended for use on a standalone audiocd-copier and just carry a copybit protection layer on the lead-in to comply with the "Digital Audio for Consumers" standard,as directed by the RIAA.
Better search for real Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim cd-r and burn them @ 16x max if your home cdplayer or car stereo skip or can't read your burns.
@ high burning speed, the pits and lands on the cd-r are sometimes not deep enough to be readable @ other equipment, besides computer hardware....

Hmm. Interesting. What about DAO vs SAO and other options? Or what about the time between tracks? Quite often I find that if I stick a cd into the player over and over, one out of 20 inserts will sometimes read it, and will start the track. Once the track starts, it is good and plays fine. However, forwarding to next track generally causes the disk to error, but not always. This is true of many players both in vehicles and at home and portable ones, on various media but not those two listed AFAIK, and on lets say maybe 8 different burners with many different softwares.

DAO is mostly used for disc to disc or image to disc copy(ideal for live-cd's)
SAO is for multisession cd's,you can add data later,or other data(examples are cd-extra and mixed mode) but the cd is already playable on most equipment due to it's closed session.
TAO is for creating your own compilation, you can re-order the tracks, add or remove silence gaps and more...

I voted Nero (paid) and ImgBurn.

I used ImgBurn in a family's member laptop, which I installed. It does the required job. But, I use Nero because I find it to be a full workable solution for me.

ImgBurn has one huge problem for me; it won't create multi-session disks. Otherwise, I'd only use this one.

For audio CDs copying, you really want Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) and NOT any of the generic burning apps.

Anyone using Ashampoo 2010 on Windows 7, 32 bit? If so, any issues?

Apparently it's version 9.12. I am just now trying out the features of Windows 7. How is the built in burner in Win 7 for burning cd's?

I use Nero 6 Full came with my Lite-On DVD Burner for free, works great. I tried the latest version and it was awful, continued to go as slow as a turtle, would lock and freeze and destroy my discs. So I simply re-install Nero 6 from the included disc.

I use Ashampoo Burning Studio on my other system, they are always giving away free promotional keys and they allow upgrading to latest version.

Unlike Nero, Ashampoo was never destroyed any of my discs.
Ashampoo Burning Studio has become the leader in commercial burning software.

Of coarse many of the free products are also very good.

Thanks.:)
