The presupposition of thie article is that the Linux version of Avast is at least as capable of detecting and removing Windows malware as is the Windows version. Anyone know if this is true?

Avast Linux Edition has the same engine (and detection capabilities) as avast 4.8 for Windows.

And still you will have some Windows users that will not be grateful to Linux...;D.

Thanks.

You don't need ubuntu to do this, just check out slax and it's security modules also dr.web livecd is awesome alternative.

I just use the Avira AntiVir Rescue System that is also Linux-based.

Very Easy to use.

Download program and execute. it will then ask to burn cd. If you hit "exit" you can save the ISO and burn with like ImgBurn (FREE).

There's a lot of recovery live CDs (http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/12/11/13-antivirus-rescue-cds-software-compared-in-search-for-the-best-rescue-disk/) - most of them are Linux-based. AVG (http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2010/03/26/avg-offers-free-rescue-cd-to-repair-infected-machines/) is the latest free addition[/url].

Wrt Avira - if the thing they offer for download is the same what you get w/ v10 Premium version, then this was completely unusable for me, since someone horribly botched Xorg server configuration there, so the only thing I'd get was a black screen and a message from my LCD that it can't handle such refresh rates). Someone at the Avira forums also complained that mouse is not working there. :(
