View Full Version : NOD32 4.2.35 killing Website Login?
nrms
March 21st, 2010, 10:12 AM
I updated to the latest NOD32 version yesterday. Now today I am finding that I cannot stay logged into my Streaming Music site (www.hos.com) for more than 10 minutes at a time. I am logged out and apparently the contents of a cookie are deleted so that the website doesn't even know who I am (it usually relies on a cookie to do this).
Is this something that has changed in NOD32 and if so how can I stop it interfering? This is taking web security a step too far!

Please provide more information about your operating system, installed service packs as well as the browser and its version that you use to view the site in question.

Windows 7 Ultimate, all the latest updates, IE8 (8.0.7600.16385).
It relies on Flash which is using the latest version (10.0.45.2).
It was working OK a few days ago, and Eset NOD32 is the only thing I've changed since. Now confirmed on a second PC also running the latest NOD32 update. I get logged out after 10 minutes, and the site no long recognises me which suggests something is aggressively deleting my cookies.
I am reverting to a backup image from earlier in the week to see whether it is due to NOD32 or whether there is a website problem.
Thanks

Is your Browser correctly configured to accept cookies (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm) for the site ?

Yes, it is configured exactly the same as it was earlier in the week when the website was working properly - only change has been to install the new version of NOD32.
I have now reverted to a system drive image made before updating NOD32 and using the previous version again (NOD32 4.0.474) and the website is running fine again (logged in and streaming music for over 30 minutes without problem). Clearly the problem lies with NOD32 v4.2 deleting cookies where it wasn't previously - is there a setting I can change to stop it doing this?
If not, I will have to revert all my PC's back to the older version.

I am able to hear streaming music at this site with cookies blocked and without being logged-in. Albeit for not as long as you state is the issue.
Unless someone here is willing to create an account at this site to replicate what you are experiencing, I suggest you submit and issue ticket to ESET (http://www.eset.com/support/contact#)

Guests get some access at the HOS site. The problem comes when you log in with a paid-for account when cookies are used to identify you and keep you logged in. I am reverted to Guest access after 10 minutes, which means something is deleting the all-important cookie. NOD32 is definitely in the frame because since reverting to NOD32 4.0.474 the problem has gone away.
I am waiting to see what Marco has to say from earlier in the thread.

I have now reproduced & confirmed this problem as being due to Eset NOD32 v4.2.35 and have opened a case (Case #479542) with Eset directly.
Thanks

Noted, if you have further comments, either from you or your ongoing open ticket with ESET, post them back to this post. For clarity so that all interested may follow it.

try using Firefox v3.6... who cares about IE these days

The OP clearly stated that he is running IE (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=1643426&postcount=3) so, your comment is moot.
Browser choice is personal, I use IE, others I know swear by FF. As you wish.

Still, when troubleshooting an issue related to browsing websites it's always a good idea to try another browser as this may narrow it down a bit.

I had the same problem. I had to do a complete uninstall, and install the update. Its fixed the problem so far.

I've tried completely uninstalling before reinstalling 4.2.35. It doesn't make any difference for me.
I can reproduceably install the latest NOD32 and start getting the problem with something in Eset logging me out of my paid account at www.hos.com (presumably by deleting a file that the website is creating/using to identify my paid user status).
If I then revert to 4.0.474 all is good again.
Regretably I'm getting rubbish support by email and have given up on them. They are ignoring my detailed testing results & analysis and merely sending out dumb-fool std emails telling me to uninstall & reinstall. I've got better things to do than waste time with this tactic, so I will be running with 4.0.474 until my 3PC; 2yr license expires in June and then moving on.
Thanks

You have a point, Marcos but FireFox is currently under 0-day (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03/19/firefox_chrome_security_updates/), otherwise, yes, it would be an excellent fallback to try another Browser in order of elimination.

What do you have protocol filtering set to and what did you set your web browsers (under web access protection)?
Thanks.

This sounds very similar to the problem I have and have posted elsewhere. Some sites keep telling me cookies are not enabled when they are. I had to disable ESS to be able to log in to my PayPal account to name but one. i hope someone can get a handle on this as it is driving me crazy.

For those having this type of issue, please try the following and let us know if it resolves the problem:
- disable real-time protection
- disable HTTP checking in the main program menu (F5)
We've been unable to reproduce this problem with v. 4.2.35 on Windows 7 x64. In theory, there might be a conflict with another application so if you are able to reproduce the problem at any time, please create a log from SysInspector, put "W268137" in front of its name (the ID of this thread) and upload it to ftp.nod.sk/support (access is anonymous).

I have reinstalled version 4.0.474 and this works perfectly, so I shall sit on my hands on this one, as I have spent hours recently trying to get 4.2 to work.

I am experiencing this problem on Windows 7 x64; as suggested I disabled real-time protection and HTTP checking and everything started working again. This problem does NOT happen when I use Google Chrome as my browser. The way I can reproduce this is to try to login to my iGoogle account; it kicks me out saying that I need to enable cookies.

Would you please disable just one protection at a time so that we narrow it down to the particular module?

Disabling Real-time file system protection made the problem go away. I also uploaded a SysInspector log yesterday.

Could you please also try the following and check if the problem persists after completing each of the steps?
- enable pre-release updates, run a manual update and restart the computer
- disable self-defence and restart the computer

Fixed by enabling #1, Pre-release updates.

Is this resolved now, so I can reinstall version 4.2 please, or are we waiting for an update??

I have followed previous instructions and reinstalled 4.2.35 (ESS) and at the time I noticed that the modules had updated also. There was no problem anymore with any cookie recognition messages or failing to log on to any site. This morning when I turned my computer on I now have a Windows Action Centre message saying that ESS is not turned on, and looking into ESS it appears that real time file protection is turned off, and I cannot get it turned back on,so was this intentional in the module update or is there something that I have to do to turn it back on??
UPdate.....did a reboot and it is now turned on- how odd!!

Just to report that the problem I reported in the OP, is STILL occurring in the latest v4.2.40. So it's back to v4.0.474.0 for me. My license is due for renewal in June so it looks like I won't be renewing beyond there.
