View Full Version : 100,000 members - license giveaway!
Paul Wilders
February 16th, 2010, 06:01 PM
As you know, we've reached a new milestone - 100,000 registered members on the forum!
The staff of Wilders Security Forums would like to thank all of you who participate here on a regular basis. You are the ones that make this site such an active and helpful place. Many people have both learned and taught here over the 8 years that we've hosted a forum at wilderssecurity.com. You are all appreciated.
To celebrate this milestone, we will be holding a license giveaway contest for our registered members.
The contest will be in the form of a random drawing to give away software licenses that have been generously provided by several developers and friends of the forum. We've set up a special form to allow our registered members to enter themselves into the drawing. The form confirms a current email address, needed to send out winner notices, and allows members to choose which products that they would like a chance at winning.
Courtesy of the following companies:
BillP Studios - 5 WinPatrol Plus licenses
Diskeeper - 5 Diskeeper Pro Premier licenses
ESET - 50 ESET NOD32 Antivirus licenses
ESET - 50 ESET Smart Security licenses
Javacool Software - 25 EUlalyzer Pro licenses
Javacool Software - 25 SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate licenses
Malwarebytes - 25 Malwarebytes Anti-Malware licenses
Microsoft - 15 copies of Windows 7 Professional (NFR version)
Paragon - 200 400 Drive Backup Professional licenses (+ extra bonuses) ***
Prevx - 50 Prevx 3.0 licenses
Soft4ever - 15 LooknStop licenses
In addition to the products listed above, there will be a separate giveaway for Returnil Virtual System (RVS) licenses, the details of which will be announced in the near future.
Some additional information and drawing rules:
Only members whose accounts are in good standing will be eligible for entry in the drawing.
Individuals may enter the drawing only once. Using multiple member accounts is not allowed and will result in forfeiture of any prizes.
Winners will be notified using the email address submitted on the contest entry form.
Notifications messages that "bounce" for whatever reason are out of competition.
Winners who have not replied to our winner notification emails within 14 days will forfeit their prize.
Winners will be asked to provide their real name and their ISP email address. Web based email addresses are not allowed for prize awards.***
If physical media is involved, those winners will need to provide a shipping address.
Our decisions as for this giveaway are final and not open for discussion.
Contest Entry Form (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/sendmessage.php?do=enterdrawing) (contest is over - link is closed)
All drawing entries must be submitted by 11:59pm (GMT -5:00) on March 16, 2010.
The drawing itself and the initial winner notification emails will be sent out within 3-5 days following the close of the contest entry period.
Actual prize awards may take up to two weeks (more, if physical media needs to be shipped) following receipt of reply to the winner notification messages.
We are very excited about this milestone and the chance to show all our members our appreciation. Feel free to spread the word to those you believe might be interested. And remember, you can't win if you don't enter!
We hope you enjoy this initiative and we wish you all the best of luck!

Umm our ISP does not offer email so we use webmail, it that a problem?

I'm afraid so. We'll have to put up some barriers to prevent abuse (people signing up as a new member using various different web mail addresses). Apart from that, there are vendors involved not accepting web mail.
I sincerely do hope you'll understand.

Thanks for the 100,000 members license giveaway contest! It is going to be great fun.
Please clarify something for me (us?)...
Regarding,
"Winners will be notified using the email address submitted on the contest entry form.
Winners will be asked to provide their real name and their ISP email address. Web based email addresses are not allowed for prize awards."
I am using Hotmail for Wilders membership right now. May I submit the entry form using Hotmail, but if I am selected, will I then be given an opportunity to provide my ISP email addy?
My interpretation of the entry rules is that what I have asked you is permitted. But of course I need to check with you!
:)

Just a suggestion for any future giveaways I think once you have been a member for so many months with so many posts you should be allowed to use your Web Based email address. I know it would cause some extra work filtering threw users that had just joined and have have 1-5 posts but I fell it would be well worth it.

That's ok but not needed. See my former post above. Either way, those registered with a webmail address will have to cough up their ISP email address in case they win.

I registered with Wilders using my Yahoo mail account. Does that mean if I enter the contest, I will still be ineligible?
P.S I prefer not use any of 5 email accounts that I am permitted with my ISP...after all, I might switch IPs someday,...so I will never have to go through the hassle of notifying a change of email address. Just my 2c. ;)

Whoa, Paragon really stepped up to the plate with 200 licenses plus extra bonuses!
50 licenses from Prevx ain't too shabby, neither! :thumb:
Maybe we'll witness a competition between vendors to outdo oneanother, and they'll keep upping the ante for the prize pool!
Hopefully Paul will allow that to happen! ;D

Paul, another question regarding rules, if you don't mind...
Are members taken out of the pool of possible winners after they win one prize?
Or are all members eligible to win on each individual prize drawing?

it sucks that only ISP emails are allowed since i have no clue what mine is cuz i never bothered to use it.
maybe in the future it culd go by ur post number or how long uve been a member instead, that way it would still sort out the people who just make new accounts for the draw and allow the real members who dont have ISP emails to participate.

This milestone should really come as no surprise, because when an environment exists for excellence to flourish it WILL come to fruition and that indeed happens here on Wilders. The brainpower that contributes to this site is without compare as it relates to this genre and I thank Paul and everyone that contributes to keeping it what it is, THE defacto site for computer security. Thank you to the security vendors for this great opportunity by giving away copies of your hard work.

Anyway, I never use my ISP email (lol). I just went to their site and randomly entered an old password...it worked!
Question: Some people will probably sign up with their regular webmail address. Then, if they win and don't have an ISP email address (or forgot it and can't provide it), will that prize go to someone else randomly?

Are number of posts or last post date relevant factors?" }-"Good standing" simply means that the member is not in any state of warning or suspension. Like most forums, we have our share of spammers, posters of warez, as well as moderated and banned members. Those members whose accounts are in such moderated states are not considered to be in good standing.
-{ Quote: "How do you estimate the number of possible participants?" }-We haven't. The number of participants will end up being the however many people decide to enter by the end of the 4 week contest period.

I see. Fair enough.

Yeah i don't have ISP mail either.
I remember back in the days they used to offer one, but in the recent years (3-4) they stopped offering it unless requested :'(

Hi Paul;
I'd like to congratulate all the members for making this forum the best there is pertaining to pc security. I personally have learned a lot here and compared to where I was last year I am now more security conscious and carefull. Also, through my interaction with you gurus I have helped my pals on some insights about a thing or two about security set-ups and tricks that I have learned here.
Thanks to the administrators/software developers-help who guide us here (especially newbies) to interact/participate more.
Congratulations!!!!

While that's only 3100 votes, it has been active continuously for more than 6 years. Votes are added everyday from across the membership, so, it is probably fairly accurate as a sample set.
Well, except maybe for the 11 from Antarctica (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=142785&postcount=352).

Yes, 100,000 is an impressive number! I wonder how this compares to other similar forums. I personally think that part of the success of this forum is due to the ever present moderation which keeps the whole environment sanitized from bullies and trolls. Administrators and Moderators are doing a great job.
If I made a wish, I wouldn't mind winning a Windows 7 license... You guys can have the rest!

The board is older than that, but it would need an historian to tell the whole story ;)
At least already in September 2001 it existed on the EZboard.
On 8/9 February 2002 it migrated to another Host and at that time it used YaBB.
Later the board migrated to vBulletin (which the board is using now), but I don't remember when that happened.

This forum is contagious, I can`t help coming here several times a day to learn about security and hear what knowledgeable people have to say about different problems. Learning all the time. Thanks to the Wilders team.

-{ Quote: "http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=7240#post7240
Oldest I could find." }-That is indeed the oldest "public" post remaining on the forum.
As FanJ pointed out above, this forum was originally created as a "YaBB 1 Gold SP1" forum in Feb 2002. The actual first post was made in a private forum section and was esentially an "Okay, the forum is created..." kind of post. It was made on February 8th, 2002 at 01:51am, minutes after the installation process was completed.
The forum opened to the public on the next day. The post noted above by Get was one of the first made in the public forum sections. There were others, but, some posts were deleted back in the earlier days.
And, as additional trivia, the forum moved to YaBB SE on June 10, 2002, then to vBulletin on April 10, 2004, but, the base database itself is still the same now as what was started on Feb 8, 2002. It was carried forward by conversions and migrations, maintaining existing posts, threads and members, from one forum software to the next.
