If you don't have the latest (Java required to see all the available info), get it - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa385815(VS.85).aspx
And or have the service stopped, then attempt bonegang's (stoopid's batch) fix - http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43676

Don't wanna run it take the manual route. Your other option as I read says reinstall (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144), with possibly the "fix" cli here (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13554_3-9999378-33.html).

You're using Automatic Updates? This is just normal. It means a lot of people are updating also. You're in queue. It will download the update(s) on it's own after some time. If you want to get updates asap go to the Microsoft Update site using IE.

@mantra
From your log: "Update is not allowed to download due to regulation."
Many are downloading and downloads are being regulated so as not to swamp the servers. Just make sure that Automatic Updates is on and it will download or continue to download update(s).

Updates have started / stopped twice this AM (on XP). Doubtless it will resume shortly where it left off. Not unusual from my experience.

Makes sense. When MS releases these security packs, maybe hundreds of thousands of machines simultaneously attempting updates.

Similar. Hundreds of lines in the log in just the last 3 hours.
A lot of: -{ Quote: "Queueing update for download handler request generation." }- and -{ Quote: "FATAL:....." }- messages.
PS: Updates icon is back (for the third time this AM) resuming where it left off, and just now disappeared again...
My suggestion: patience :)

In your Automatic Updates options, which is selected:
Automatic (recommended)
...or
Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them

AU will not prompt you since it has not finished its download job. After downloading the remaining update(s) it should re-appear and ask you, granted you selected either option 2 or 3 in AU settings.
I remember from the logs you just removed that you turn-off AU when the tray icon disappears. Don't do that as your download queue will be reset. Just leave it on.
Bob D is spot-on, Patience is the key. For some us who are impatient you can download the remaining update(s) from either Microsoft download center or Microsoft/Windows Update.

AU stopped downloading update(s) due to high demand but will resume after some time.

No. Do you turn-off AU, option 4 in AU settings when the tray icon disappears? I remember seeing a line pertaining to AU being turned-off at the end of your logs.
You're welcome.

With this option, after you click the icon to select the updates to download, Windows downloads the updates in the background; you are not notified or interrupted during this process (icon disappears). When downloading is complete, the Windows Update icon re-appears.
