Isn't this like the 3rd, 4th "new AV" in a week? I'm starting to get a bit suspicious with these posts. *adjusts his tinfoil hat*

For this and other “new anti-virus solutions,” I wonder: what is their competitive advantage? Stated differently, what feature/benefit do they bring to the marketplace that doesn’t already exist? If they are indeed innovating, then that’s great -- but, otherwise YAAV (“yet another anti-virus”) is not advancing the state of the discipline.
Edit: Typing error.

It's a beta -- they are looking for help. I hope one of the AV gurus here ( of which I am NOT one) will give them a hand.
We might have a budding Kaspersky on the horizon -- if folks help them out.
Is Nano a No-No? Nanu nanu!

This can be done either here or from the quarantine NANO Kaspersky.
Also very help logging NANO Virus (labeled "Send logs to customer support" in the Start Menu \ NANO Kaspersky)

I tried it today .Good looking.
Installation took long time.
Memory usage was around 90MB.
I tested it with 4 malwares( 2 rogues and 2 Troj.downloaders)
It failed all those:thumbd:
I had Smithfraudfix and combofix in my pc. Nano detected those as trojans.???
I then tested it with EICAR . It detected .
u can find those pics Here (http://rapidshare.com/files/334594858/NANO.rar)

WHOIS info indicates they use some kind of anonymity service.
The English version of the website is REALLY bad. If you can't do it professionally, then don't do it at all.
Smitfraudfix and Combofix detected as trojans ?
Potentially rogue, IMO.

Potentially an over-reaction IMO ::)
The product may be rubbish but using such a reverse-psychology mind-messin' MO as this:
"1.I'm sure the file is infected but NANO AntiVirus reports the file is clear.
Answer: One of the most probable cause is the sample of that virus is not presented in our database. Perhaps you had catch "fresh" just created malware."
on their FAQ page (http://www.nanoav.ru/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=16&Itemid=59&lang=en) to entice me to download the program is certainly breaking new ground in the rogue-purveyor business. ;D

What was the 'fake antivirus' ?
If I had to guess which one was 'fake', it would be Nano.

nikanthpromod didn't use Personal Security to detect malwares. He installed it on purpose and then installed Nano Antivirus to test if Nano Antivirus would detect and remove the "fake antivirus" (Personal Security). Unfortunately it didn't.
Say, if you (Nano AV's developper I guess) actually know that Personal Security was a "fake antivirus", why did't Nano Antivirus detect it?

The reason is simple. That "fake antivirus" is not in our virus base yet.
Any help is appreciated. If you have this sample, please send it to us and we will add it in the next update of our virus base. You can use the form on our site, which address you will find in my profile.

Then how do you know when it isn't fake/rogue ? :dry:
Too many new AVs/antimalwares without any solid background. At best, they are just ineffective.
Why post them at this board ? People want to play with them ?
IMO, 'playing' is all they are good for.
If it requires signatures, it requires a lot of resources. Generally, these new ones don't have that. Why take a risk when there are some many AVs that have a good reputation and are tested, more or less objectively ?

1- What exactly does System Guard do?
2- Please provide more information as to Nano's heuristics, behavior blocker, or other provisions for detecting/preventing zero-day malware.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I gave Nano AV a short trial. It does NOT require a restart during installation. Therefore I was able to trial it in Shadow Mode, using Shadow Defender.
It's a 37.5MB download. At only 102-106 KB/sec, the download took several minutes.
Install was relatively slow, too. The install thermometer quickly moved to about 75% but then slowed or hung & took about 3+ minutes to finish the install job.
The updater works good, & is very informative as to progress & what is being downloaded.
Main GUI (before I did the update) . . .
221045
Nano has only one process listed. Process Explorer info re that process, shortly after installing Nano . . .
221046
221047
Nano's System Guard didn't work. Perhaps that was because I was in Shadow Mode, but all other antivirus programs run just fine in Shadow Mode. In any event, I did send the logs to the Nano folks.
I was impressed with Nano last time I tested it few days ago. It detected many of the threats in my set of malwares although I have published the hashlists of those malwares already. So i did not update the results in the main list. The removal process and installation process is a bit lengthy and also it consumes a bit many RAM, but did not slow down my VM with ~700Mb RAM. I am hoping to get a good AV in future.
Your assumption is incorrect. We have registered our trade name before the appearance of that fake AV. Really we have many problems with this upsetting name coincidence. But now I guess the main part of problems is behind. Russian searchers (and google.ru too) almost don't offer links to any info about that fake AV:)
Thank you for the trial of our program.
As for your questions:
1. The System Guard provides a real-time protection from any kinds of malware.
2. After the final release we are going to take part in VB100. So we will have official results. As for the present the VB100 team has tested our program, but we can't publish results as they are unofficial.
Last time I installed it (latest version) I could not complete the update. It took a lot of time but didn't complete.
I tried to install it, using Shadow Defender. Despite several tries, I was never able to get past the screen shown below -- even after waiting >15 minutes.
Ergo, I still do not know if Nano needs a reboot during installation. Does it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am following Nano's progress with great interest. I am very interested in learning more about Nano's effectiveness on zero-day stuff based on its heuristics, emulation, etc. (I wonder if it includes a behavior blocker?)
I am less interested in the scope of its signatures. In fact, I hope they plan to go cloud-based.

When I tried to copy the intallation log, it wouldn't highlight the entire contents of the log even though I held down the shift button while attempting to do so.
Therefore I decided to take screenshots of the logs. When I activated my screenshot program, it somehow pushed Nano's installer into finishing its job. Even so, it took Nano over 15 minutes to install itself.
I repeatedly tried to get a beta-test license so that I could get signature updates. Evidently this feature isn't activated because Nano told me it was unable to connect -- even though my connection is fully functional for everything (AV updates, Email, web surfing etc).
223840
Afterward I received a couple of nag screens. :dry:
223841
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I ran Nano for about 1/2 hour . . .
+ Two processes show on Process Hacker: (1) starter.exe (2) nanosvc.exe.
+ Combined data: (a) Total CPU time ~2+ minutes (b) Pvt Memory 158MB (c) Virtual size 554MB
+ I/O usage was steady at ~2.22kB/S.
+ When surfing or using applications I sensed no slowdown.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The GUI is intuitively easy to use. It has everything you could ask for EXCEPT it lacks settings for heuristics.
Nowadays I want an Antivirus program's GUI to give visible evidence that it has active and TWEAKABLE heuristics &/or behavior blocker.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It seems to me that Nano is *behind the times* in NOT offering in-the-cloud technology. Even so, I think Nano is among the most promising new AVs in the pipeline, & I shall continue to monitor its progress closely.
Hi bellgamin,
Thank you for trial of our product.
Your situation with long time of installation process is non-typical. Could you help us more?
Please send to us logs. Use "Start->All programs->NANO AntiVirus->Send logs to the support service". Then follow the instructions of "NANO Report" utility. If you can't send logs with our utility, save them and send the file to support@nanoav.ru. Please specify the subject as something like this: "Logs from bellgamin, wilderssecurity". Also we need an information about your PC (OS, hardware, free space on the system disk).
As for the installation log, we needn't it now as the usual logs are more informative. But I would like anyway to explain how to catch it. Just click in the log field with right mouse button, the small context menu appears, then select there the item "Copy data to the clipboard". Or just use ctrl+a->ctrl+c.
As for the error of the license getting, the most often reason is you used other AVs before or now and some of those have changed your registry (winsocks). We know about this problem and plan to realize enhanced mechanism. At the present time we send personal license file to any registered user via e-mail on demand. I can send the personal license file to you to the e-mail address you have specified in your profile.
Thank you again for feedback and your aid.
Up until today I have always installed Nano using Shadow Defender (it's feasible because Nano requires no re-start during installation). In every case Nano installed verrrry slowly.
Curiosity finally got the better of me so, today, I made an image & installed Nano into my *real computer* (not Shadow Defender). It installed quite normally. Not slow at all. Ergo, my guess is that Nano doesn't like Shadow Defender (&/or Shadow Defender doesn't like Nano).
I have now restored my computer to pre-Nano state, but I am increasingly impressed by Nano's prospects. However I still say they need to consider using in-the-cloud technology in order to stay current with the competition. I made this comment in an earlier post but the Nano rep has thus far chosen to ignore it. :dry:
When is the final release expected? Any new features being added in the next upcoming [major] releases?
Another popular question is: will Nano Antivirus remain free? If so, I think a paid version of the product should be made to help support development costs and so on. So there would be two products: Nano Antivirus and Nano Internet Security. NIS has additional features such as a firewall, antispam, phishing filter and identity protection?
Other idea(s): The popup notification has a hand on the upper-left corner, which IMO could be edited into something else. Instead of a hand, it can be an X (designed like the one in Immunet or Norton) and the Nano icon could turn red as well (like in MSE). The popup notification could also be a little smaller in size too. Resource usage could also be improved so it can be more friendly for netbook users like me.
I don't really know why but I've been keeping an eye on this company since their inception. There has to be a lot of improvement before the product is ready to be marketed as a paid product. In my opinion the signature based AV is rapidly becoming obsolete. That being said I wish Nano all the best & hope they can continue to improve the product & lower resource usage.;)
As for the final release, we don't specify a date yet. Also we haven't an public information about our commercial plans.
We plan to add web-traffic scanner, plugin for outlook express and perhaps something else. Also we enlarge our virus base, improve a performance, detect, resource usage and so on.
The OPSWAT Certification (ex-OESIS OK) has been awarded to NANO AntiVirus in the Antivirus category. The OPSWAT Certification Program is designed to enable partnerships between independent software vendors and leading technology solutions. OPSWAT Certified products are verified interoperable with solutions that employ the OESIS Framework, allowing applications to be easily integrated on millions of endpoints.
During testing process NANO AntiVirus must be correctly installed on all supported operating systems and language combinations reflected in the application’s documentation. Then our product must pass Rogue Application Test. NANO AntiVirus installer and binaries are scanned against lists of known rogue applications by multiple anti-malware engines. The rule is that no any applications with any file reported as “suspicious”, “threat” or other nomenclature indicative of rogue applications will be granted certification. Also was checked is OESIS Framework supports the function calls listed.
How effective is NANO AV against Competition?
bellgamin
April 7th, 2011, 04:18 PM
-{ Quote: "How effective is NANO AV against Competition?" }-Nano is an early beta version of a brand new Antivirus app. As such, I would assume that their main concentration is on fundamentals such as: (1) getting proper functioning of the GUI & the scanner, (2) identifying & dealing with any conflicts between Nano & other popular programs, (3) getting Nano to function well with Win7 AS WELL AS legacy Windows systems, (4) getting Nano to be as light as possible in terms of system resources, surfing speed, etc, (5) attaining high degree of self-protection -- & so forth.
Working on signatures & heuristics must also be done, of course, but the programmatic factors, such as those listed above, would usually take higher priority. Experienced beta testers are generally aware of these facts. Those who want mature/tested protection might want to avoid betas & instead use existing AVs -- rather than expecting early betas to function at RC levels with respect to detection, cleaning, etc.
I like how this program makes a lot of improvements over time even it's build only advances slowly. This way when the final build (1.x) is released it will be as stable as possible.
Unlike some other AVs out there that put a whole new build every year, but only provide minor changes and new gui (Avira even skipped a whole version, going straight from 10.x to 12.x).
The alpha still has high RAM usage and a buggy update bar (It had 283% as its percentage of update completed and then went to 100% a couple of seconds later). I'm not sure about the long installation time since I have a SSD as my way of storing the OS, etc.
