While it seems to me that Amarok rules the roost for kde, there is quite the healthy debate over the best player for gnome. While I like Rhythmbox, the absence of an equalizer (I'm not compiling) and the seeming inability to drag and drop from my music folder has led me to Audacious as my main player and exaile as a backup (I always install two of everything).
I not asking which player is better. I just would like to see what members choose as their player, and why.
Kde'ers, of course, can jump in.

I am 100% sure you mean 'Audacious'. I find both Banshee and Rhythmbox sound somehow better. Having said that, still haven't tried the latest Audacious.
If you don't have the winamp presets you can get them here:-
wget http://www.xmms.org/misc/winamp_presets.gz
gunzip -c winamp_presets.gz > ~/.config/audacious/eq.preset

Cool. Thanks. I have a lot of live music and some compilations and I find Rhythmbox and banshee don't list them properly. Many unknowns and some missing songs. I probably have not spent enough time exploring the various options and am just prefer a simple drag and drop method. Also, I like some of the audacious plugins. The extra stereo plugin really helps with the sound quality with my tiny, cheap laptop speakers.

Goggles Music Manager (http://code.google.com/p/gogglesmm/)
Probably one of the best. Supports Replay Gain and gapless playback.
Have you tried it ?

Will check it out Ocky. Thanks. I have since dumped Audacious and am using exaile and banshee (added the ppa for banshee).

List of audio players - filched from Ubuntu forums. If you have the time .. :ouch:
Audio players:-
1. Rhythmbox 2. Banshee 3. Exaile 4. Listen 5. Decibel
6. Gmusicbrowser 7. Quod Libet 8. Amarok 9. Songbird 10. atunes
11. Youki 12. Audacious 13. Christine 14. Gejengel 15. muine
16. Quark 17. juk 18. sonata 19. Gimmix 20. Aqualung
21. Bluemindo 22. Pympd 23. Mesk 24. GMPC 25. Goggles Music Manager
26. Jajuk 27. lsongs 28. jukes
Jajuk looks good and is in the repos. However replay gain I think is only supported in the newer versions.
" * status changed from new to closed.
* resolution changed from None to fixed.
Done in 1.8, added volnorm option in advanced tab of preferences view."
The newer versions are available from:- http://sourceforge.net/projects/jajuk/

I still like Songbird :thumb: BTW, and maybe a bit ot sort of, but need to mention this. Last night got some dvd rentals for the kids. My son wanted to play his on the computer. Okay I thought np, just bring up Nero showtime. Always worked before. Unfortunately, not this time. Some stupid error and whatnot. WMP is also useless. No go. So I thought maybe give Linux a try. Bring up Mint 8, pop the dvd in and, lo & behold disk is recognized immediately suggesting open with Totem. Worked perfectly without a hitch. Just another instance where Linux, during my venture, can something better than Windows :)
