Hi mata7
Sorry it didn't work for you. I have used those instructions several times including today after I posted when I did a clean install of Mint. Have also used on Ubuntu 9.04.
Hope somebody else can come along and help you, like you I am a complete n00b, only started with Linux about 4 weeks ago. Sorry I can't be more help!
As it was a new install and you had never updated Fx before, I assume you followed "Case II: You never updated Firefox in Past".

A little more information would be helpful. Did you install ubuntu 9.10 or 9.04? If 9.04, you will find firefox 3.5 in the repositories (system-administration-synaptic package manager). If you installed ubuntu 9.10, you have firefox 3.53 and it should notify you through update manager when 3.54 is available. There is no need, imho, to go outside the repositories.

It's not there yet. The servers are getting slammed with everyone downloading and upgrading. I am assuming this is a security and/or error upgrade for firefox, so it should be available in a few days. Is there a specific reason you need this update immediately?

It was upgraded much quicker than I thought it would be. Open up synaptic, hit "reload", then "mark all upgrades", and you will have 3.5.4

Yeah I got my Firefox 3.5.4 update a few hours ago as well. Generally you have to wait a day or two after Mozilla releases their patches for them to be pushed to the Ubuntu repos. It's usually the same with other distros.
One thing you should avoid (especially if you are on 64 bit) is going to Mozilla's website and using the version on their site. 1) If you are a newb you will have a hard time figuring out how to install it (Linux doesn't work like Windows). And 2) Mozilla does NOT release 64 bit builds.

If you want to test the newest beta and alpha versions you can also add this ppa to your software sources:

Install Ubuntuzilla and activate the notification. When Firefox releases a new version, it will notify you to get the update via the Terminal.
