This one's made by the people at CERN and Fermilab, and wow, they really know what they're doing:
https://www.scientificlinux.org/download/
Features include...
- SELinux: disabled by default in the live CD, but you can enable it if you're feeling paranoid.
- Linux 2.6.18 (heavily patched and with backported drivers): This kernel is a bit slow to boot due to its size, but once running it is very, very fast.
- XOrg 1.1.1 (heavily patched and with AIGLX): You'll notice that there's none of the ubiquitous Linux window tearing in SL; that's probably because of this "old" X server. :)
- NDiswrapper: needless to say some of the wireless drivers won't work right... So there's this for running Windows wireless drivers.
- Emacs: yes, it's there by default...
- Wireshark: this is a security forum, I figure you guys know what it is. Mandatory warnings about respecting people's online privacy apply here. *puppy*
- OpenOffice and the GIMP: just like on Ubuntu. Only much faster.
- Flash plugin: also there by default! And so is java-gcj-compat, with the option to install Sun's java if you want that.
It takes a bit of configuration to make it suitable for a desktop/laptop (most notably suspend/hibernate quirks for certain laptops apply), but once configured it is rock solid. And fast. Have I mentioned fast? It makes Windows XP look sluggish. This is what Linux *should* be like.
