It's happened due to remastersys no longer making bootable live CD's on my system. There was no prompt just a black screen.
How can I remove the CD without having to fight with the tray, or is force ejecting it the only way ?

You can shut down the machine and on boot, eject it.
I prefer that to using the pins.

So hold down (press) eject button during boot-up ? Thanks.

Yup, just once or twice.
For example, some Linux live CDs do not eject CD when the live session ends.
No worries, on next boot, I press the eject and the CD comes out. Simple and non-violent.
