For Ubuntu users who have just switched from Windows, 'The Gimp' paint program might seem a little strange.
Here are a few useful filters and plugins.
G'MIC for Gimp (http://gmic.sourceforge.net/gimp.shtml) Put it into / home/user/.gimp-2xx/plug-ins folder after extracting. In Gimp find it under 'Filters' tab.

Lomo Plugin (http://registry.gimp.org/node/7870) elsamuko-lomo.scm (scroll down) Put it into /home/user/.gimp-2xx/scripts folder. In Gimp find it under 'Filters'>'Light and Shadow'

Liquid Rescale. This plugin comes with the gimp-plugin-registry package (Universe) in Synaptic. http://liquidrescale.wikidot.com/
In Gimp find it under 'Layers' tab.
