Why does it keep happening ?
Lucky they were that there were techies strong with the FOSS :D

If there's any insight at Integral ( of which I am a shareholder ) this should be a BIG wake up call.

Maybe it's time to go off the grid.
If off the grid, then their mistakes can't effect you.
I have a wire to ground from my tin foil hat and store the potential difference to help me go off grid. :D

from a quick read it seems the only reason linux saved them was because their isnt any ITW malware for linux atm. the article stated the virus that shutdown the grid was detected since febuary... so infact the issue is a bad admin.

It's always the admin's bad. The bad in this case was allowing Win computers on the network. :o

There seems to have been a lot of bad in this case...

- Not keeping AV software updated (Symantec's had definitions for Virut.CF since February)
- Having computers controlling vital stuff hooked up to the network (At least firewall them!)

Also, the choice of OSes seems kind of suspect to me. I'm not an expert on this stuff but last I heard the more popular choice for such applications was Windows CE (a very secure realtime OS) as opposed to Windows NT (not realtime and dodgy security). I'm not sure I'd want to use Linux for controlling a power grid either.
