View Full Version : Prevx RC 3.0.4.200
PrevxHelp
September 21st, 2009, 06:42 PM
Hello all,
This build fixes a number of issues and should overall be much more compatible with other applications.
32bit: http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?grab=edgebeta (ignore the "edgebeta" part of the URL - this download is RC1 )
64bit: http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?grab=edgebeta64 (the web security functionality is not 64bit compatible yet but there are significant improvements "under-the-hood" of Prevx for 64bit still)
The changelog is:
- Major optimization to realtime protection when loading large programs
- Added configuration to be able to use screenshot utilities which don't use the Print Screen functionality (note: you may need to restart the browser for protection changes to take effect)
- Fixed compatibility with Sandboxie (note: it doesn't protect sandboxed browsers but you can now use Sandboxie with SafeOnline enabled)
- Fixed compatibility with KeePass/KeeForm
- Fixed compatibility with Keyboard Express and ShortKeys from Insight Software Solutions
- Fixed compatibility with MailWasher Pro
- Fixed some issues with clipboard protection causing the clipboard to not function properly
- Fixed an issue creating new folders in a secured IE window
- Optimized text parsing in Opera
- Fixed an incompatibility with ACE Registry Cleaner
- Fixed an issue which can potentially break internet connectivity
- Fixed some issues allowing Opera to communicate to other processes
- Fixed some logical issues with the browser tab/status reporting
- Fixed an issue in the keyboard protection which could cause a BSOD on bootup
- Fixed compatibility with Java running within Firefox
- Improved cleanup of some new rootkits
- Fixed random "Invalid Handle" messages
- Fixed an incompatibility with Glary Utilities and CCleaner
- Fixed some slowdown issues in Firefox with plugins installed
- Fixed Alt+Tab behavior when a secured window is opened
- Fixed an incompatibility with MetaProducts Flash and Media Capture
- Fixed some issues with user password configuration
- Fixed behavior when configuring a scan to load on website access
- Improved some areas of self protection
- Reduced overhead on window enumeration
- Optimized registry protection
- Minor graphical/textual changes
We recommend uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling this build but you can just install it over the top (however, the fixes will not be applied until you reboot).
Current issues are:
- (Partial?) Incompatibility with Sandboxie
- Possible issue when upgrading Firefox
- Possible incompatibility with BS Player PRO
- Possible incompatibility with the Web Filter of GData
- Possible issue with download managers
- Some incompatibilities with DefenseWall's "Untrusted" branding/Online Armor's green border
- Incompatible with Jaws screen reader
- Incompatible with Babylon OCR
- Incomplete Safari support
Please let me know what you find and thank you, as always, for the testing! :)

Upgrade install and reboot; all seems well. Had just updated OA to beta 4.0.0.3 and they seem to coexist fine. Turned SafeOnline back on and it is working for Opera 10, FF 3.5.3, Chrome 3.0.195.21, IE8 on this computer. Will upgrade other computer tomorrow (Vista Home Supreme) that has sometimes had problems with SO.

Great! Works for me, no IE8 crashes so far with this plugin enabled. :)
{QUOTE-> - Possible incompatibility with BS Player PRO <-QUOTE}
Maybe this problem is gone too? So far no browser locking problems, but I have to keep an eye on that for a bit longer to be sure. ;)
Please don't forget Babylon ... didn't found it in the current issues list but the problem isn't solved: I can't OCR (=translate words) from browser windows anymore with this RC version or the one before. Public version works fine of course.
p.s.:
After changing SafeOnline setting for http from LOW (default) to MAXIMUM and then playing around with Hypersnap (MAX: black screen as it should be, LOW: works fine) I had several Prevx crashes seconds after the screenshot was taken - coincidence? The Prevx icon always changed to black (disabled) and repaired itself to green. And in this context a few times this error message came up:

Great :) This plugin was definitely the source of the issues you were having before with web.de.

This is probably a conceptual incompatibility - could you try turning down the protection from Maximum to High, restart your browser, and see if that corrects the issue?

Installed it over the non beta version, rebooted, manually enabled browser protection. Everything working good so far. No invalid handle faults so far either. :thumb:

Tried that. I even disabled SafeOnline completely (off) but nothing changes. :( -> Babylon isn't able to OCR words from browsers (I tested IE8, FF 3.5.3 and Chrome 3.0.195.21).
PLEASE, you have to find a way to enable normal Babylon functionality? With SafeOnline ON and OFF anyway. - I use this translation program frequently and would more likely drop Prevx than Babylon. - JFYI. :)
I put all my faith in you! ;D
Until the magic is done I copy & paste it from browser to Babylon application. That works of course. ;)

It gets better! ;D
After I wrote copy & paste would be no problem I suddenly had a problem with .. exactly ;) .. copy & paste. Babylon would show blank field when pressing ctrl+v instead of pasting it in. That worked with notepad but not with Babylon. Strange? I think so. ;-)
But then I couldn't believe what I saw:
Babylon OCR all of a sudden WORKED with IE8 and FF!? ??? FYI: In that moment Prevx did an automatic scan!
After that scan was finished I couldn't OCR with Babylon anymore. Magic was over. ;D So there seems to be something different during a scan?
However ... after all that I had another Prevx crash and now the icon is gone. Interesting. :)

??? Could you please try uninstalling/reinstalling the new build 3.0.4.200 fresh (if you had upgraded from 3.0.4.195)? We haven't had any other reports of crashes and can't reproduce one but I think this could be affecting your protection and causing the random behavior.
Alternatively, if the uninstall/reinstall doesn't fix it, if you'd be willing to have me try and diagnose what the problem is with our remote tech support from LogMeIn, I should be able to get the problem solved quickly :)

I did a fresh install (not over public build: uninstalled public version / rebooted / installed RC) and experienced what I wrote.
Because of 3 crashes that froze my system I had meanwhile to reboot 3 times and in between strange things happened like first of all firefox didn't start (I killed 2 running instances .. maybe crashed, but killing them didn't help start another instance) and on next boot IE8 would mysteriously not start ... so that I for now finished my 3.0.4.200 testing and plan to get some rest .. ahm .. sleep before sunrise ;) ... until the next RC release maybe only avast! home protects my system. ;)
But if you want me to test other things with this build just tell me, ok? I'll do as told. ;D

Sorry. :lurking: No remote maintenance here possible for security reasons. Please don't take it personally. ;D
p.s.: With RC gone all is back to normal. No problems anymore. :)
Good news ... because I have no backup: -> no risk no fun! ;D

Joe,
New version seems to have fixed https weirdness in Opera, however, large text files being opened in browser still don't load completely. Once SafeOnline is off, text file (online book in my case, ~1300kb) loaded fully. Prevx is a clean install after uninstall->reboot->reinstall, SafeOnline is at default config for both HTTP/S with no modifications.
Let me know if you need the link via PM again.

Just installed RC 3.0.4.200, and after reboot I am unable to connect to the web using any of my installed browsers(IE,FF,Opera).
After a little experimenting I determined it to be an incompatibility with Sandboxie, as disableing it enables me to connect to the web.
Prevx 3 was uninstalled, before installing the Beta.
Disabling SafeOnline did not help.
Are there still other incomparability issues with Sandboxie, other than the one you noted as being fixed?

Action center still reports that prevx is turned off but prevx in on.
I think it happens some time after a right click scan on infected files and canceling the automatic full scan after. Its the only clue i have.
Clicking on the turn on now button doesnt turn prevx on :D

Joe you may want to know that i have downloaded P3 RC 200. i did an uninstall of .195, rebooted, and installed 200.
everything seems fine (btw, the issue with P3 and CCleaner clearing Opera 10's cache is no longer an issue, even if it isn't really fixed. i simply clean the cache from within Opera before closing the browser) but P3 did do something weird. i downloaded 200 from the link you provided and saved it to my desktop. after the install of 200, i cut the installer from my desktop with the intention of pasting it to my Security apps folder. well when i accessed that folder (on my D:/ drive) P3 alerted on Shadow Defenders executible as Medium Risk malware?!? i have had that file ssitting in the same location since 11/02/2008! needless to say P3 has never alerted on it. i excluded it and moved on, but that was a very peculiar alert.

Uninstalled 3.0.1.65, restarted, installed 3.0.4.200. Scanned, everything fine as normal until I tried running both FF 3.5.3 or Opera 10 (forced to sandbox) and neither would start. FF error said it could not read .ini file. Opera said it could not read a .dll file. FF unsandboxed worked just fine. I don't think there was any problems running GData Web Protection at the same time but I uninstalled .200 right away so I can't say for sure.

Have now installed Bld 200 alongside Online Armor it and appears to be running OK without any problems.
Although I haven't got the green border round the browsers (FF & IE7) it does now appear around the other programs set to run safer, ie: WMP, Foxit etc.
Most important though is that all programs set to Run Safer in OA are now shown in Process Explorer as running non-admin (as they should be) irrespective of the the green border. With Bld 195 they were showing as running with Administrator privileges.
One question to ask :) When running OA alone without Prevx Secure Browser I get prompts to allow or deny ActiveX content, with Sandboxie as well there are no prompts as the ActiveX is contained in the sandbox. Running the Secure Browser with OA and no Sandboxie - no ActiveX prompts. So, is the Secure Browser containing the ActiveX in the same way that Sandboxie does. What level of sandboxing does Prevx Secure Browser apply if any?

I've an issue that came into sight after the previous version (3.0.4.195) came out:
When I switch between accounts in Windows XP SP3 the autorun command
Path="C:\Program Files\Prevx\prevx.exe" /bootupreg
Category=\All\Registry\All users\Run

The Prevx SafeOnline status dialog (for lack of a better name) overlays the 'sign out' screen link when Gmail and other Google pages are displayed from an application shortcut in Chrome 3.0.195. This makes it difficult to read or use the underlying link.
Here's a quick blurb on creating application shortcuts in Chrome:
http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95710
To recreate the problem navigate to a Google search page in Chrome and follow the above procedure to create an application shortcut. Then launch the shortcut and observe the results. hum ...

PS: Had just noticed yesterday a similar problem in MS Money and was going to report it but checking today it looks like the MWPro fix has also resolved the issue in MS Money...must have been the same issue common to a number of apps that use IE browser-based technology in the same way.

Prevx SafeOnline doesn't have sandboxing to the OS (essentially it sandboxes the browser from the OS, and each individual ActiveX control from the user's data within the browser), but, to clarify - are the ActiveX warnings usually coming from OA or are you referring to the normal IE ActiveX prompts?

Prevx SafeOnline doesn't have sandboxing to the OS (essentially it sandboxes the browser from the OS, and each individual ActiveX control from the user's data within the browser), but, to clarify - are the ActiveX warnings usually coming from OA or are you referring to the normal IE ActiveX prompts? <-QUOTE}
Joe,
Have turned browser protection down to "High" - no difference, but as all the programs set to Run Safer in OA are now running without Admin privileges I can live without the green border. The fact that they were running Admin was my main concern.
The ActiveX warnings are coming from OA (see screenshot taken with Prevx off the machine). With Prevx on board I do not see that warning and the game runs without problems.
Will try a few more things and report back.
Edit; forgot to attach screenshot, see next post

Hi.
I had a serious problem once I've installed this new RC one at Windows 7 (which was downloaded from Microsoft Technet) with NAV 2010 and Appguard. I could not even access to the Acronis True Image Home (TrueImage2009.9769_s_kr) when I reboot it thru the relevant CD in order to roll it back. It happened with the BOSD out of the blue when to begin a full and deep scan by Norton Antivirus 2010, and the rebooting paused.
I thus intend to reinstall the Windows. All those security programs above are proper ones not trials. Besides I just notified the Prevx customer service of this case.
Perhaps I got a sense that the Prevx RC is getting onto the stand-alone security program, or more precisely the one with no coordination of other antivirus software.

This is correct, in many cases the right click scan does not add them to the scan log - if you want a file to always appear in the log, it is most reliable to put the file on your desktop and scan from there.
The reason for this is that the scan log would get filled with a lot of extra entries currently, but we are working on a new engine design for better integration of the right click/custom/full/deep scans which probably won't make it into the first release of SafeOnline but will come in one of the next updates :)
.... more to come on that later, however ;)

Good to know, thanks :) Could you try one more thing: can you turn down protection to Medium for both HTTP and HTTPS and see if that let's OA through?
Thanks! :)

Hello,
Thank you for the information and sorry for the inconvenience :-[ - our goal is still full compatibility with other security software but you seem to have encountered some incompatibility. Could you please send any minidump file from c:\windows\minidumps\ to report@prevxresearch.com to see if we can find the problem from there? Prevx wouldn't affect a bootup CD so that may be an unrelated problem occurring at the same time, but the minidump should definitely allow us to find additional information on it :)

Still no green border Joe.
However I noticed earlier that the Web Sites page in OA does not record the web sites visited if Prevx is installed. This works in conjunction with Web Shield which is neutralised when running Sandboxie and it appears to be affected the same way by Prevx. It doesn't make any difference if I disable Browser Security, nor if I disable Prevx from the "Remove Protection" option as well as turning off Browser Security, the only way to enable the OA Web Shield is to remove Prevx from the system. With Sandboxie it is sufficient to simply suspend Sandboxie to get the Web Shield to Work.
Hope that is of some help; as I mentioned previously as long as the browsers are not running with Admin privileges while using Prevx the missing green border is a minor point.

Can't make a Desktop Icon Via Basic Configuration > Check Create a Desktop Shortcut and Click Save Changes Win 7 RTM 32bit!
I can do it via Start Menu > All Programs > Prevx Folder > Prevx and Right click and send to desktop!

Edit: For some reason it works now lol

Thanks for the prompt response (couldn't ask for better support!)
Testing on various platforms I have encountered a problem w/SafeOnline and Chrome on XP SP3. Prevx is unable to reliably resolve Host Name and IP address. In most cases it simply displays 'unknown' but on occation it shows google.com after I have navigated to another site. Prevx operates normally with IE7 on this box.
Let me know what I need to capture (and how to do it) to help you diagnose.

I just installed the beta version and found out it is not compatible with Shadow Defender, when I went into 'shadow mode' none of my browsers would open.
Uninstall Prevx beta and browsers run again.
I am ruunning Online Armor, Sandboxie and Shadow Defender. Windows XP SP-3.

{QUOTE-> I suspect this is our good friend Sarah again... I'll look deeper into the details I found from the remote session to see if we can avoid the incompatibility at a lower level and let you know as soon as we have a new test ready :) <-QUOTE}
Hi Joe,
I am up to something here and sorry for the troubles with sarah.dll & co!
Remember? I told you when you were suspecting the Fritz!Protect firewall (which ist part of Fritz!DSL wich is software 'suite' for Fritz!Box router manufactured by AVM) causing Prevx RC troubles (no 'internet' all of a sudden) that I had no problems with this firewall and public version of Prevx.
That was misinformation, sorry! :(
What I had not in mind when chatting with you: The same day or the day before I had upgraded after a very long time without any trouble ('never change a running system!' ::) ) from Fritz!DSL 2.04.02 to 2.04.03.
Just because I was bored or something. It's always the same with us update junkies.
Today I had so many strange problems here with Prevx public build or without, with Avira Premium etc. .. that I remembered that mentioned 'upgrade'. - I am convinced now that this new Fritz!DSL version is buggy as hell (btw: twice I had an strange error from that program right after installing Avira) and is the cause for all the (firewall) trouble you saw during our recent remote maintenance session. :(
Yes, hypothetically it could have been that something in registry was damaged during my rampage and your wizardry ;D and at least one key I had to change regarding my friend Dr. Watson ;) but anyway I have no backup (next time will set at least restore point before letting Joe in if not doing a whole backup of c:\ *g*) and I am now quite sure it is not a problem with my registry but with Sarah ... that little [censored]! Exactly as you thought! :lurking:
I am running now the old version again which I had no trouble with for many month and of course Prevx public build now is also behaving fine again. No problems so far. Unfortunately I don't have Prevx build 202 anymore so I cannot test this build again under new circumstances.
But I hope you are not losing any more time due to Fritz!DSL 02.04.03. AVM doesn't seem to support their software with necessary priority - that is for month or years and it's a shame because I like that software very much when it's not causing such troubles. As I noticed other users have massive problems with this Fritz!DSL build too and again .. I am sorry that this has wasted so much of your/our time. - Just had forgotten this upgrade which is in fact more a really bad downgrade. :(
I will watch what is going on here and maybe the next Prevx RC is working just fine as it should when Sarah isn't messing all up. We'll see. ;D
And to others using Fritz!DSL: If you can stay away from 02.04.03 or you probably won't have much fun with Prevx for example or at all! - If you need XP 32bit 02.04.02 (it's not available at AVM homepage) just let me know via PM or pester AVM until they do their homework. ;D

We've corrected an incompatibility with Sandboxie which will be released in the next test version but will still do further testing specifically with Shadow Defender and report back with what we find.

Hi,
some questions here
are there any incompatiblities with:
KAV webfilter? because my browser crashes when i use the secure mod but it also can be outpost firewall pro or a-squared so i think it would be nice if you could take a look at a configuration under windows 7 32 bit with
KAV, Outpost Pro, Prevx, A-Squared and Ad Muncher.
Would be very nice becaus i dont know how to report a browser crash^^.
Thx

Installed this version on a Vista machine with only the just released Threatfire, 4.6.0.19 in real time.
Complete freeze a few seconds into the initial Prevx scan. Only choice was to carry out a Hard power shutdown.
