View Full Version : Which Social Networking Sites Are You A Member?

How many social networking sites are you a member of today? I have made quite a list of sites but if you are a member of a site not listed please post it. I also tweaked this a bit to add the options of "blogging" AND "blogging on sites like this only" and "only WildersSecurity". If you blog on sites such as WildersSecurity AND are a member of sites such as MySpace and Twitter just choose "blogging". If you are NOT a member of a site like MySpace or Twitter and ONLY blog on sites such as WildersSecurity please choose "blogging on sites like this only". If you only post messages on WildersSecurity and not any other message boards AND you are not a member of any social networking site such as Facebook or Twitter, please choose that option, which is the last choice in the poll.

Thanks

Would you be so kind to explain me what means this: " blogging on sites like this only" ?

-{ Quote: "Which Social Networking Sites Are You A Member?

Only WildersSecurity.com" }-

I don't think that this two can go together in one sentence. :argh:
Wilders to my knowledge is not an "Social Networking Site", except if we are going into fan-boys zone :lurking: .

I agree with Renegade08.
I don't consider Wilders a social networking site.

Whether blogs/forums are social networking sites sounds like something for another poll. And maybe it's a debate some social scientist can answer as well. I appreciate the comments. But I think the poll answers all tie together. And I suspect there may be some form of social networking going on with posting on blogs/forums whether the posters realize it or not.

Hi acr1965,

You poll is really interesting indeed. I was wondering the same question how many of the wilders community uses Facebook or similar services.
-{ Quote: "Whether blogs/forums are social networking sites sounds like something for another poll. " }-
I was thinking that too.
When someone reads somewhere about "social networking sites" i highly doubt that first association would be forums, and on contrary he will think on MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and so on.
-{ Quote: " I appreciate the comments." }-
Glad to hear that.
-{ Quote: "But I think the poll answers all tie together." }-
At the end is yours poll, and you can decide what to put and what to exclude from the poll. Let's see what people will give as an answer.
-{ Quote: " And I suspect there may be some form of social networking going on with posting on blogs/forums whether the posters realize it or not." }-
Well this may take a long, but let's make it short.
While someone has an blog an is blogging is one thing.
Reading blogs is another. Also casual comments (once in three months) is really another issue.
On the other side forums are something different.
While on many forums majority of people know a lot for eachother, i really don't think that this can be said for all the forums including Wilders.
Maybe when "ten-forward (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=50)" was on Wilders (which is now closed), it might be consider as some sociability.
Now as you can see @ Wilders come people interested in security "that must" talk about security or thier posts, threads and comments will be deleted.
Not much of social Networking Site, if you ask me.
We are like Geeks that must talk on some specific subject, and that's it.
That has good and bad sides.
I don't know anything about you, and you don't know anything about me. Again not much social. Of course this can change in future if we contact trought P.M.'s.
And that's for about most of the people here.
Except if you don't count P.M.'s, where people can introduce themselfs.
And if you look at someone post history, you may think that you know that guy or his behaviour, but only at PC related or security related issues.
Not much if you ask me, but that's only my opinion.
At Social Networking Sites, some group of people have their close friends and add them to their contact list.
But these days you can witness the opposite thing.

It's not as if social media, um, d-bags, didn't know Facebook existed. Au contraire, they've been all over it for at least a year, begging people to become fans of their clients. College students, however, are about to find out that social media jobs exist, and are one of the best rackets going. Wait, you mean I can bother people online, using networks I was already signed up to anyway, and get paid for it? When do I start?" }-

Many are adding as friend hundreds of people that don't know.
As i've said before let's wait how people will give thier answers.

-{ Quote: "How many social networking sites are you a member of today?" }-Well based on what I consider "social networking" sites I would have to say none as my preferred answer.

In keeping with your criteria I selected "blogging on sites like this only". That statement is cumbersome to me, I've always considered blogging (a contraction of weblog) to be a log of chronological thoughts, musings, ramblings, activities you want to share with others on-line.

That said, I suppose I've been doing some form of "socializing" on-line for years. I'm thinking BBS, FidoNet, Usenet, etc. Just never thought of it as social networking. Especially as it is applied today. Most of my forum activity is in technical, specialized forums such as Wilders. The closest thing to social networking I come to is a couple of general discussion forums and newsgroups.

I have accounts on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter for purposes of spreading additional news and updates about my company.

Of course, I also keep up with friends/family that way too.

I spend more time on sites like Wilders learning/sharing information though.

WILDERS!

No others can touch this community and it's "social" + "technical" discussions w/ intelligence that yields huge dividends in the results department ;D

Another Facebook here, although I really think it should be renamed Bragbook as that's all most of the 'friends' I seem to have tend to use it for. I see it as a good way to keep in touch with a few good friends on the other side of the world and to take the you-know-what out of my friends and family who use it to brag about how wonderful their lives are compared to mine ;D .

Since my last post I have become more social. I have reluctantly joined Facebook because my daughters has/had an account. I made the youngest delete her account. Me I am glad I joined. Met some old classmates from high school and many relatives I have not heard from in years. It's not so bad as long as your stay alert and watch what you put in your account and stay away from applications and the Like button unless you real want to use them. I also joined LinkedIn at the request of a friend not sure why I did, not real point in it. I am retired.

Some sites that many don't think of much any more have become social. I have e-mail accounts with Yahoo!, Hotmail and Google. All three have added more social stuff. I had to go through each account and turn it off as it's enable by default.

I don't think it's odd.

The only one I participate in and I use the word participate loosely is Facebook.

Excluding forums and places like Yahoo Groups I belong to a couple of other places that would fall under the definition of social networking but they are restricted in membership.

I would have voted for the none category.

Looks like many here have the same sentiment that I do about these places, which is pretty much everyone else can have them because I want nothing to do with them.

Funny though, I will post in some technically inclined forums everyday with people I don't even know really, but don't find the fascination in blogging what my current state of mind is to people I do know.

Maybe that is some kind of medical condition...

Blogging on sites like this only ... and I don't have my own blog, but will occasionally comment over at a favorite author's blog. Essentially the forums I frequent are strictly tech-support, like here, though if you extend "forums" to include interactive mail lists (such as Yahoo Groups) I'm also active with (and a moderator at) a medical peer-support group, and formerly a couple of others too.

As for "mainstream" social-networking, I can live without it. As others have commented, with real friends phone calls, actual get-togethers, and even email are much more appropriate.

I am registered only here. I registered because I like this place, the truth is I could care less about computer security. If these forums were discussing construction machinery, I'd still be a member, if you get where I'm coming from...
Oh yes, I almost forgot, I am also a member of TalkBass forums (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/), but I didn't post in a while. They are complete nerds there ::) I prefer playing instead of babbling about equipment.
So I did vote for "Only WildersSecurity.com".

None. I'm too concerned about my privacy in the long run.

You have made a quite long list. That is appreciated. I use almost all the networking sites listed in above posts because I like to connect with my friends up there. Another reason for joining the networking sites is advertisement of my business. These networking places are the best option for the advertisement of any kind of business because you find many people out there.
My list is:

Myspace
Facebook
Friendster
Netlog
Orkut
Hi5
etc..
