Jerry1967: As a general rule, the answer is yes, you should run both an AV and an AT. For a discussion on this very subject go here:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=24045
For free ATs, the options look like two: Ewido/ESS and A2.
Hope this helps.

Mcafee does an excellent job of detection trojans in some cases more than an at. But a dedicated AT will be able to handle the trojans much better.

Sorry if I step on ant toes here.
Jerry. I would think that one would need an AT if they are downloading from Kazaa or another P2P program or always downloading stuff from sites they don't know. But As for free. ESS is a rather good Program. You can use a2 and ESS together without any conflict.

Don't worry I have steel toe boots :). As long as the info is pertinant I don't mind a bit. ;) But personally I would still recomend running an AT along with an AV.

Don't take my post the wrong way. I am not telling use an AT. I think a layer protection is a plus. ;)

Many good points here. However, as a previous unsatisfied user of McAffee, I personally wouldn't recommend having that piece of software as the only defence against viruses, let alone trojans. >:(
If your looking for a nice piece of AV freeware, try AVG. It's light and does a fine job at detecting those pesky viruses. Take the money you've been wasting on McAffee and spend it on a nice AT like TDS-3. With these two pieces of artillery, you'll be better protected. 8)

If you want a free AV try Avast. I used AVG before and found it to be rather dull. It let a virus in on my windows98 computer. Also I been see that AVG updates don't work well.

Notageek,
Not sure what the story is behind the AVG updating problem. But there is a simple fix, in case any AVG FREE users are interested:
Locate Url.ini in the the directory that AVG was installed.
Change from:
removed - this is in principal in violation with the Grisoft EULA, as has been discussed on this board before over here (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=24282) - paul
And as long as you update the sigs on a daily basis, you should be fine.

agree with notageek,
Avast is a nice alternative.
features:
frequent AVS updates
mail scan feature
100%VB criteria recent history shows great improvement using above Avast 4.

believe the incentive is there to consistently keep this status; pace of AVS updates confirms this end
good support help at forums:

The fix is not allowed - discussed over here (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=24282).
No offense intended ;)

No offense here Paul. I don't use AVG so it's not a big deal here. If people ask me for a free AV I send them over to Avast. ;) If you want I'll remove my other post so it don't confuse anyone. I think people are missing the topic
"Re AVG free server tweak" becuase it's a page or 2 behind the 1st page.
