I just talked to my son and he says he is having problems with his computer. One day he had no power in the house and I flicked the circut breaker a couple of times. Then his computer had no power. He figured that it maybe a power supply that went out. He ordered one on line. He now says that his computer keeps freezing up since that change was made.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be? He knows more than I do, I would never have known why the computer went out.

Thanks

Thank you for the idea. I will ask my son and see what happens.

Is your son young, computer literate? Any idea which site he dealt with?

Hi good hearing from you. He is pretty good with the computer. I'm the one that looks for help with the computer, I always come here because I always get answers. I don't think he looks at sites for help.

Normally PSU (power supply) messes around like this, but if you have a new one then check you don't have heat problems (summer syndrome). A good thing to know when checking temps is the ambient temp of the room to determine if its just an excessively hot room.

Check all the fans are spinning. Clear any dust or junk from inside. CPUID's Hardware Monitor is quite good for checking temps, CPU, GPU, Hardrives, even has a voltage monitor, is freeware. Would be worth running at boot and checking all averages in 15 mins later or so. It will show the min max temps, should tell you if anything is cooking. Try in safe mode if its crashing.

If everything is working fine (fans) and you don't have a problem with excessive temps. Start poking around with software faults. See if any recurring errors are present in Event Viewer (Star - Run - type Eventvwr.msc, click ok, look in application and system tabs)

Toodles.

Well if he's pretty good I'm guessing you shouldn't be the one playing middleman on his behalf. Fine gesture but too much lost in translation. If he's as competent as you describe then he already knows it's he who'll be taking it up with the merchant, the one who must've made the suggestion in the first place. That, or have'm (he's aware of this as well) seek the advice of a local repair shop. You've got better things to do, ;) no?

I'd say cheapo low quality new PSU. Since you didn't tell us the name & model.

He has never used a site and I have, I showed him some suggestions from some helpful people who have already posted. I would like to thank all who sent their great suggestions. He has looked over those suggestions and I think his problem is starting to make sense. I'm glad I came here to help him and I will be back again if another problem comes up.

Thanks
