Good place to start?

Hi,
I'm a new memeber to this forum. ;D

I am really interested in PC security.
However, my knowledge on PC security is really shallow.

I really like Sandboxes, and Classical HIPS,
because I like the concept where I have to configure the setting.

But I don't think it's a good idea to start for a newcomer like me? :-\

Where should I start from to accumulate my knowledge for security?

Hi and welcome to wilders !

Everything, everyone learns it in time so don't worry about it (for a start). Along with you AV and Firewall, you can install a Behavior Blocker that is a tad easier to configure and less invasive then classical hips, although classical hips may give you the sense of security, starting with a BB is better to understand how the program works, what to do in case of abc or xyz.

I recommend to read threads here about the program you will choose (yes like Threatfire or Mamutu) and to read the documentation and the examples provided, it will improve your knowledge about the subject.
As for a sandbox, you have different options. I'm only knowledgeable in SadboxIE, very easy to use, the default configuration is pretty strong. I think Defensewall has a sandbox too and its a policy based hips too, so you can try that 2 in 1 thing.

Though a bit outdated, I've found MalwareHelp (http://www.malwarehelp.org/articles.html) to contain some valuable information on computer security.

And some security setup guides include mechBgon's site (http://www.mechbgon.com/build/security2.html), Techsupportalert (http://www.techsupportalert.com/how-to-secure-your-pc.php) and CERT (http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/home_networks.html#IV).

Yes, it's one of the easier to use HIPS. If you try it make sure to also implement their RunSafer feature, it's a great tool.
