Microsoft puts in a lot of resources to make sure applications don't break when a new operating system comes along but between 40-70% of apps are said not to work on newer versions. One free tool to help with migration is the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.5 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=24DA89E9-B581-47B0-B45E-492DD6DA2971&displaylang=en#filelist). ACT can also help with information when incorrect version checks are made.

Benefits are not having to test each individual app (which could be considerable over the enterprise) on the new architecture, compatibility checks with Windows updates and fixing problems.
