Drive Letter Switch error

I partitioned the hard drive with Disk Director, rebooted, and everything was fine. I decided to also change the drive letter of my xp os. When I rebooted after changing the drive letter the computer screws up. It loads windows like normal, but when it goes to the log in screen the names don't appear, all that appears is the windows logo and it stops. The pointer shows up and I can move it, but that's all I can do.

Your OS needs to be C: drive again. Interesting test but it illustrates why you can't change the drive letter of the OS.

Here is a cookbook approach to zeroing the DiskID.

Use a Win98 floppy (or a Win98SE floppy). At the A: prompt, type fdisk /mbr and press ENTER. You won't see anything happen. It just goes back to the A: prompt.

As most people don't have floppy drives, you can also use a Win98 boot CD from...

Get the Win98SE_bootdisk.iso. Burn the ISO file with ImgBurn. Use the same method. Type fdisk /mbr at the A: prompt and press ENTER.

I'll try it. Also my drive letter was originally E, that's why I wanted to change it. I tried changing it back to C. Is it possible to use this process to change it back to E?

Then I'm misleading you. fdisk /mbr only works if the drive letter "should" be C:

You need it to be E:

How did you change it from E: ?

Thanks for all your help. The Rescue Kit worked perfectly. I was able to change my drive letter back to E and I didn't lose my data or my partition.
