View Full Version : Why is generic Signature Update Frequency Low in KIS as compared to other components

Hi,
I really love KIS, but as far as updates are concerned, what I could see that KIS updates its emulator Klavemu , and klavemu01 almost on daily basis thatz impressive updating heuristics and other components almost every day, but the generic signatures are updated seldom: I hope these are genXXX.kdc eg. gen001.kdc.
In my hope if Kaspersky increases the frequency of updates of generic signatures, they will be among the toppers.
Thanks
Correct me, if I am wrong on something...

I'd ask the question over on the Kaspersky forums, more likely to get a response.
Looking at the files you ask of, I noted that gen006.kdc was updated late yesterday.
BTW - aren't you a Kaspersky gold beta tester, Sourav?
Cheers.

Perhaps because great strides have been made in developing and improving the heuristics, not so much has been needed in continually updating the generic signatures on a regular basis. A tidy-up is performed every so often, and I imagine this is when generics are tweaked. Don't forget we also have Proactive Defense to fall back on as well.

I turned on Automatic updates.
Schedule seems to be about every 140 minutes.

I have KIS setup to update every hour. I just feel safer that way. :)

As we speak, an automatic update is running on my desktop.
Really slows things down.

I have to agree with you that KIS's updates do have a tendency to slow things down. I especially notice it on the initial update when I first start up my computer.

I would guess that ANY AV's update is going to slow things down.
A real puzzle is WHY KAV/KIS would even do an update WHILE I am running a manually started scan. I would think that the update should wait until after the scan is completed.

Is your updater set to auto or scheduled update? For me, I've always set the updater to an hourly check, hence I've seen the same issues as yourself. I'm wondering if changing the updates to automatic stops this issue?
Perhaps a thread in the beta section of the Kaspersky forums is the best way forward to resolve this.
Cheers.

Automatic gives less updates.
Seem to occur about every 140 minutes.
But Automatic has advantages over scheduled, see the online help.
There will be times I will disable updating, e.g., when I am timing certain things.
