What happens to deleted emails?

Either rec'd or sent. I know in at least outlook express, go to the deleted file, the have a option to "permanently" delete them. But I question if they are really gone. Even if you use Eraser or something similar, who knows where those files are hiding. How can you really permanently erase them? Thanks

They go to silicon heaven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Heaven).

I found out where Thunderbirds trash folder is and Erase it with Eraser.
