While a browser isn't usually categorized as a security product, a look at the attack vectors in the past year or so reveals that a browser that permits control over scripting and plugins effectively neutralizes exploits using:

Flash
Quicktime
PDF Readers
MP3
Rogue Antivirus products
DirectShow*
and similar.

I haven't tried Shadow Defender or First Defense so I can't comment on them.

There needs to be a good worldwide dbase that all applications can tap into to fix new threats. Most of what you posted here in your poll is current. There is so many out there. I just use what my sign say and that's it.

Windows 64-bit itself with DEP and UAC, but it also creates quite a security harmony with other included aplications like IE, Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. I have also Avira, but just to shut up Action Center and easy my conscience, that I do have something, that can actually detect mallware. :)

I tried Outpost Internet Security Suite 2009 the lastest build .0687, OA lastest .18, KIS2009 .506, Eset business server version 4x.

I prefer to KIS although it is pretty deep menu trees of browsing for settings and many open windows to setup; it is almost no problem at all I have seen on my boxes.

OA is transparent secure protections to users. The GUI is simple and easy to go with. Its advance setting optional come with Paid version are great. OA let users to config applications for each other corresponding components to run with it. It seems OA firewall has something slowdown on network and internet performances?

OP suite 2009 is great at protection. It supports to run on windows server os. OA can too but not officially supports. It is great but seems it has some problems with vmware virtual guest os in networking? I love OP for its explicitly option on RAW network access which OA does not - although when OA asking "system" want to connect to other computers, this is a raw protocol network access?

KIS2009 is great but it does not work on windows server 2003 OS. It is rock and smooth.

Three applications make up the core of my security package on every Windows setup I have, Kerio 2.1.5, Proxomitron, and SSM (free or pro version, depending on the OS). I can't name a favorite when I consider each of them to be equally important. To me, that would be like trying to decide which is more necessary in a car, the engine or the transmission.

I know some of you say the AV is bad in Comodo CIS 3.10 well Avira P Free Edition wasn't any better showing FPs even on the default settings and there wasn't a way to say add to safe list. Thus the program doesn't protect from bad sites with malware. You need CIS for that if can work together.

CIS won't work with RAVINTFREE as Rising reports CIS as trojan even with just the firewall installed.

Good lord, favorite APPLICATION, not arsenal :) Anyway, I'm going through some changes and, with the exception of when I use IE, Sandboxie is no longer my number 1 app. I truly feel Firefox with carefully selected extensions is the one security defense I would refuse to go without. I use AdblockPlus, Noscript, Ghostery, Better Privacy and TACO as my main defense, with WOT as a "guide" to the web.

Using those, I surf un-sandboxed wherever I want and not a thing happens to me.

Yeah I use Better Privacy CS Lite rather the full version either way it blocks, but not bad tracker cookies. PC Tools IS does that for me.. Firefox 3.5.1 is really slow when compared to Opera 9.6. I use both even tweaking both and making Opera go faster seems okay. Some stuff Opera hangs on still where Firefox doesn't. I also use Key Scrambler. Most of what you listed for FF I did try but gets in the way.. I want clean looking browser the FlagFox shows flags for each site but for my local network where I run Web Server and maintain intranet site it shows the network drive for that in FF.

So right now this is what I have...

For daily protection
PC Tools IS 2009 on everything including client and server OS
RegProt
Rising PC Doctor (Spyware/Malware/Trojan/Blocker/Cleaner & OS/Office Repair it also has USB protection from infection)

Firefox 3.5.1 with Adblock Plus, Flash Block, Better Privacy, Key Scrambler, FlagFox, ChipperFox, Cache Status, CS Lite + tweaks

Best of all, it's completely free for life, it's all set and forget, no need to update, doesn't take up resources etc etc." }-

;D

The security measures you can apply just with the operating system are not perfect. But they're pretty good, more than good enough for me, and combined with the judicious use of brains, can provide a very much adequate level of security. And as you said, it doesn't hurt that it's free, doesn't need additional updates, doesn't take up loads of resources and most important of all, cannot cause system instability.

Well, that's one of those philosophical things. ;D I like understatements. They lead to positive surprises. On the other hand, overstatements lead to disappointments. Ideally of course you could just make a very exact statement that's neither over nor under, but since people make different kinds of comparisons, it's difficult to get that right (for example, while one guy compares LUA&SRP to running as admin with just an AV and says "This is awesome!" another guy compares LUA&SRP to running SELinux and says "this is not good enough for me" - different strokes for different folks).

You can't write to system folders or modify system settings.
You can mess with your files, but you can't make system wide changes.
