What does this mean half way through installing ESET 4 on Vista

"Could not write value name to key \software\ESET\ESET\Security|currentversion|sheduler|1. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel

Vista SP1 or 2? New install or reinstall? Logged in as Admin?

Not logged as admin
But sounds a lot like the problem you describe muffpotter.

It runs but on demand scan but the antivirus is disabled at start up
