hi,
when i try to install office sp2 & net framework xx family update, either by going to microsoft update's site or by auto updates, these two updates always fail to install. what do you think might be the source of this installation problem? in the end, it always says the installation for the following updates have failed. couldn't figure it out. thanks in adv.
p.s.: do you think there might be an intervention/interruption caused by fw sw and/or av sw?

Hi Siberianwolf

How comfortable are you in the registry??

If you are comfortable there go into regedit.

Navigate to Hkey_local_machine>software>classes>Installer>products

When you get there it will look like the first image below.

If you expand the keys you should see something like the 2nd image. For office SP2, find all the keys relating to office, there are quite a few, and when you expand them if you see a patches folder, reneme it to something like patchesold as I have done. If you get them all then SP2 should install.

CAUTION: BE SURE TO BACKUP/IMAGE OR HAVE SOME OTHER RECOVERY MEANS AVAILABLE BEFORE DOING THIS.

hi pete,
thank you so very much for your reply. i did as you said and it worked. i already had a complete system image/back up. so if anything unwanted had occured, i'd have no problem. anyway, thanks again.

Hi Siberianwolf

Learned that trick a while ago. If you ever have a program you've patched, and the get a 2nd patch, you may well get some kind of useless error message about installer not found.

This same fix works.
