View Full Version : IE7 Crash after installing DDS 10 on XP SP2

I bought Acronis DDS 10 on CD about a year ago, but have only just got around to trying to install it - as a result of needing to expand the C: partition on my XP SP2 system. I already have True Image 10 installed (but haven't used it recently).
After installation of DDS, I started it up and went as far as getting a manual map of the partitions, before deciding that it might first be better if I made sure my backups were uptodate. I then encountered a problem getting TI email notifications to work which I recalled encountering before. That inspired me to try to bring up IE7 in order to access the Acronis web page, whereupon IE7 immediately crashed (program error box). Regrettably, I didn't take down the details of the crash at the time. Rebooting the system didn't fix the problem, and in the end I used System Restore to undo the DDS installation, after which IE7 resumed normal working.
I'm reluctant to reinstall DDS again until I've asked a few questions about this. Namely, are there any known installation problems affecting IE7 on XP SP2? Is my version of DDS (on the CD) the latest? And, as an alternative, if I boot off the supplied CD will this make DDS available to me in a manner which will avoid me having to install it on the hard disk?
Thanks, Bill R

I don't have experience to help on the IE7 crash and how to rectify that with DDS installed.
However, my experience across different machines here at home is that you will have a more reliable and safe experience of DDS from the boot CD as long as the boot CD recognizes your hard drive(s) correctly. I think the best way to answer that is, of course, to give the CD a try and see how it works.
You can do everything, as long as you use full manual mode, and possibly more, from the boot CD that you can do from a WIndows install.

The latest released English build of DD is 2,160. If you have an earlier build on your CD and it doesn't work properly, you can download the current build from your Acronis account. You will need to install it to create a new DD CD.

Well, I've registered my product key, as printed on the manual that came with the CD. The Acronis website (My Account) accordingly describes my product as Build #2160, Date 01/Mar/2007.
On the other hand, there's no explicit Build information on the CD that I can see without installing, but all the files are dated 30/Nov/2005, and Right-Click->Properties-Version on the DDS Setup.exe displays a File Version of 10.0.0.2077.
My question is does File version = Build #? If so, where does the Website get my Build # from?
Also, is it really the case that there have been no further updates since 01/Mar/2007?

The file version does show the build (2,077). You can also see it by booting to the DD CD, starting DD and then selecting Help >> About.
The build shown in your Acronis account is the latest publically available build. The same "key" is used for all of that version's builds so a build is not linked to a key (the version is). Acronis just shows the latest for your registered program.
What you have is a very early build of DD 10. I would recommend you update to 2,160 and give it a try. I haven't had any problems with DD 10 (2,160) and IE7.

;D Downloaded DDS Build 2160, created a new Boot CD, booted off that CD, resized my C: partition ... and all's well. And IE7 is still working ;D
Thanks very much for the assistance!
