Hi, I want to partitioning my hd with windows himself. The hd have now 2 partities, C: and D: with the recovery. It's the C: that I want split and thry to make a partition E:. Is that possible, and what are the precautions that I must take? Is it possible also to set the D: in NTFS or does that automatically?

Thx

If the D: partition is the OEM Recovery partition, I wouldn't change the format on it.

It's strongly recommended to create a image backup of the entire drive prior to making any partitioning changes.

Can you post a screenshot of what DD shows (in Manual Mode) for your drive? It may help to see it.

Using the Split option can sometimes cause problems. In many cases, it's better to do the steps manually using Resize, Move, Create Partition, etc.

It's not to make a partition of the D: with the recovery but of the C:

Unfotunately I can't make a screenshot because it is not this pc where I now wricht this mesage.

The hd of the otter pc exist of 2 partitions C: and D:, that's it, and from the C: I want to make a partition E:

I tried this but it don't work, when I R clic on the C: part in "disk management" there appear a menu where I clic on "resize". After, there appear a table where I fill the amount of the new part. E:, than, normaly I think, must I clic on the button "resize" for progress of act, but that button is inactive, he don't work. What is the problem now?

You need to click the Commit button (the checkered flag) to apply the change.

I assume you are making the space for the new partition by resizing the C: partition smaller from the right side (space after) so you would end up with something like this:
[C: Windows][E: New partition][D: Recovery]
or this,
[D: Recovery][C: Windows][E: New partition]
depending on where the D: partition is located.

I thought you were using DD.

In Vista, you would need to use the Shrink Volume... option, though it may not resize the partition as small as you might like. Is this what you're doing?

Have you checked the partition for any errors (use chkdsk /f for this)?

I wanted to take 50 MB from the C: drive, maybe it's to much ?

I assume you mean 50GB (I wouldn't bother resizing for 50MB).

You should get a window when you select the Shrink Volume option that tells you the Size of available shrink space in MB. If that value is smaller than what you want, then you'll have to use DD or some other partitioning program that will move the data and allow for a smaller size.
