Sabayon claims to be based on Gentoo, but is it really? It seems it has been moving away from Gentoo for quite a while now. Portage is not even the default package manager.

Sabayon is really nice, it's probably a very good choice for Win converts. Just about everything worked out of the box for me. One of my favorites. :thumb:

There is no doubt about that : Italy has always been a mecca for design style: shoes, clothes, cars, buildings, the Renaissance arts and sciences..a long and glorious history.
You are right, the distro does reflect this and has always looked great, the early 'red' themes were a little confronting for me :blink:
Considering how functional and exciting Linux distros are now it's really nice to see some real style cues available and developing.
Similar to Dreamlinux's development of their 'sunny' and open interface which to me reflects the input of the Brazilian sense of life: nice.

I've always liked Sabayon implementation: uumm could possibly be considered a bit on the 'overloaded' side :o but dont have to dl much.

Every kid I know who gets Linux distro from me gets Sabayon and its for the very reason, it makes eye candy in Vista and Mac look tame. They love it. I know some adults do as well, best of all Gentoo base means no slow downs with all the eye candy enabled.

Sabayon isn't really all that close to Gentoo anymore. It is mainly a binary distro now, which means the speed benefits of Gentoo are not there. Portage is not even the default package manager on Sabayon.

Really I think the Sabayon devs should stop claiming it is based from Gentoo because it really isn't all that similar to Gentoo.

I agree........but you have to admit, even with all those eye candy turned on, its quite responsive.

Wow, it looks stunning. Is that 10 Gb for all patitions (System, Swap and Home) or does the / partition require 10 Gb on it's own?

All together. The total installation was about 6.5GB for me, including home. But add another 1GB for swap I created.

I tried this distro in virtualbox and I really fell in love with it.
I tried the x64 KDE version. I think I will create a new partition and try it some more.

Ok, a problem..
Installed, updated with equo: Gnome.
Uninstalled Totem..I like mplayer here
installed mplayerplugin: all good
EXCEPT, cannot run .wmv files in browser tab ( FF )
All other formats good to go so far

Check 'about:plugins' : no .wmv support ??
win32 codecs present.
( wmv files downloaded and played with Totem )

MPlayer home page suggests that wmp support is enabled by default.
LOL, I cant even find the mplayer file when offered "Open With" / "do this every time" dialogue box.

No real info at their forums
No real help with G that I can see :(
Any suggestions plz?

PS: despite the GUI fopr "Spritz" being ok, I'm now completely spoiled by Synaptic.
Confusing interface. Not that logical/intuitive for all endusers

Sabayon's CLI; equo, is nice.

PPS: had a few issues with FF refusing to launch after updates.

Firefox on Windows doesn't have wmv support out of the box either.

Problem not with FF, problem with Mplayer and plugin from Sabayon repos, I think.
