R-Wipe & Clean, East Tech Eraser, Eraser, CCleaner, Tuneup utilities, and

XP Repair Pro, which does the best job at cleaning registry, and the temp/redundant files the others miss!

XP Repair Pro is defiantly #1 on my list, as it makes my machine run like its New! & Of course you need to run a defrager also, which totally improves system performance!

The common locations of junk files such as temp files, the browser cache, etc, are wiped by Eraser on a regular schedule. Junk and useless files that are installed by other software get removed during the install process. I run all installs and updates through Inctrl5, which lists every new file, folder, and registry entry. The bloat and useless files that are part of the OS were removed by LitePC (http://www.litepc.com/). The OS (Win2K) and installed software takes up less than 1.7GB.

RegCleaner by Jouni Vuorio was great. Unfortunately it stopped working with Multi core processors. Last updated 2003.

Use CCleaner & ATF cleaner now. I implement CCleaners reg cleaning recommendations sparingly.

I only use CCleaner. There are others that clean more thoroughly but CCleaner has yet to delete anything it shouldn't have.

RPD from Rising Sun PC Doctor does it automatically So does Tuneup 1-click. Tweak Power Pack Pro or Advanced System Optimizer

Ccleaner and programs like that I just don't see the being so effective for users. When you install them they wan to add that darn web toolbar and link your search engine to yahoo or ask. Advanced System Care Free that's one you should stay away from. IOBIT does make a great Defrag Smart Defrag other than that.

Tweak Power Pack
Advanced System Optimizer

If you run both of these programs you can see how much junk files are missed by Ccleaner. Ccleaner Registry cleaner can screw-up your OS if you remove the wrong files.

I use CCleaner, EasyCleaner, KCleaner, DiskCleaner, CleanAfterMe, Regvac, Adwanced System Care, PC-derapifier, Clonespy (duplicate files). Why so many? Because they combined do an incredible cleanup job and I am always satisfied.

I have tried many apps before and also had some bad experiences with some, but these are the ones I NEVER had bad experience with when cleaning my and also othe peoples computers and I have been using tem for a long time now (some longer than other but..). They are also all portable (or have portable versions), I have them on my usb that i use for cleaning and fixing computers.

p.s.: When using cleanup apps for registry cleaning, be carefull and make backups, the programs I use all make backup copys of the registrys I delete and also I always make a restore point before cleaning my systems registry. For example I also sometimes use Revouninstaller, but would NOT recomend it to an unexperienced user, simply because it is not 100% and does not make a backup of the registry by itself.. There is ALWAYS a risk factor with such apps.

To do system cleanup tasks, I always use Piriform Ccleaner Slim. Sometimes, I run Windows Disk Cleaup and the built-in cleanup utilities of the software I have installed (like the "Clear recent data" from Firefox) as well.

To do registry cleanup tasks, I use Ccleaner's built-in basic registry cleaner and a full PC Tools Registry Mechanic.

Osaban

CCleaner and jv16 Power Tools 2010. I regularly use CCleaner only with its main function "Cleaner".

With XP I used to clean the registry using jv16 Power Tools, and could see some improvement in performance. With Vista I stopped altogether using Power Tools, as no matter what I do, performance doesn't improve, and nowadays I'm warier to delete anything from the registry.

Still, I find Power Tools an excellent application to check the system.

For items like the browser cache and the temporary internet files folder, one option is to move them to a RAM drive. It will automatically be emptied at each reboot. A lot of apps let you move their temp folders to a location of your choosing. Most newer systems have more than enough RAM to support a RAMdrive.

Indeed. That's why I disabled mostly HP stuff, excluding the necessary drivers and panels.

And I confused the HP Advisor with the HP Support Assistant. The Advisor is 100% useless (and I disabled it) but the Support Assistant is nice, it just does everything of relevant that those famous maintenance suites do (iolo, tuneup, etc) but in a better and more reliable way, besides being able to download and install the very latest drivers/firmwares/bios. It doesn't run any startup process/service, it adds some tasks to the Windows Task Scheduler.

Now that I am more experienced and have switched to 7 and have disabled many annoying windows services such as Last Access (http://www.axantum.com/Blog/post/How-to-make-a-file-read-in-Windows-not-become-a-write.aspx) and many others (http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm) my windows runs smooth as melted butter.

So on occasion I use East-tech Eraser, Tune Up Utilities 2010, and CCleaner, any more than that would be overkill.

CCleaner, ATF, MRU Blaster and Old Timer's TFC once a week. Never had a problem with CCleaner and registry. Always delete what it throws up in registry clean. Cavalier maybe but no problems yet...

Have a copy of JV16 Power Tools but feel they've lost their way recently.

Registry and junk file cleaning is an arguable topic. I have been on both sides before but now prefer to stay in the middle;)

CCleaner's registry cleaning feature is mild (not aggressive unlike some others) and therefore can be trusted for most users who like to use such tools.

Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend doing registry cleaning - sometimes it causes more pain than what it solves. If you have jumped about trying such tools, you would come at one point in time and realize it...especially when things start to go wrong.

Doing backups before you 'clean' the registry is one thing but many wouldn't do it. If in doubt, it's better to be safe than sorry.
