View Full Version : Which web browsers do you use?

Just realized we don't have a browser usage share poll.
Please choose only the ones you use regularly, and not those that you keep around "just in case". Thanks.

I have Chrome and Firefox. I'd say in terms of usage, Chrome 80% of the time. Its speed on my system is addictive.

Opera 95% FF5% on Ubuntu, on Windows its Opera 90%, IE8 10%.

IE8 almost exclusively in Vista and Firefox mostly in Linux. Opera also on both for speed, but usually less often.

So 5% usage counts? Then i should have voted for other as well.

Hmm. I just thought it'd be a good idea to tell people not to vote for browsers they have installed but never use or only use occasionally, otherwise IE is going to own this poll.
I've got Iron and IE8 on my machine. IE8 has guaranteed site compatibility, InPrivate Filtering, RSS, Flashblock, Suggested Sites (not very useful, but fun), visual search suggestions and excellent foreign language support, but Iron has a more responsive UI, raw speed, the Omnibar, more screen real-estate and a better download manager. I'd say its Iron 70%, IE8 30% for me.

So count +1 other, sorry if i didn't understand the poll.
That would be Epiphany. Iceweasel 95% of the time. Extensions exist that make using another browser a step back for me.

IE8 64-bit mostly, 32-bit version for flash only, because it is too unstable, I can not wait for flash 11 64-bit. But I think about Firefox, since IE8 got messed up.

Opera all the time, as long as it's compatible enough with the webpages I visit - shame on the pages that aren't...
Whenever I use any other browser, I find it missing features that are very useful in Opera, or you've to download a "wannabe-extension" for. That would be for example (1) Undo tab closing and (2) Speed Dial. The latter I know has wannabe-extensions everywhere, but the first is more uncommon.

AFAIK IE, Chrome and Firefox can reopen closed tabs natively without needing extensions.

Some pages don't work correct with Opera and Iron :( IE8 blocks ads? Hey, congratulations to MS ;D
Another reason: LinkScanner search ratings only work with IE and FF. The same goes for KeyScrambler ...

SeaMonkey is my default browser and gets used over 75% of the time. K-Meleon gets most of the rest of the usage time. If some of the functions provided by SeaMonkey extensions were available in K-Meleon, that percentage would be higher. Both are very good browsers. Some users don't like the "old Netscape" look of SeaMonkey. To me, FireFox looks like a pre-school toy. I find SeaMonkey to be comfortable, easy to use, and faster than many others, including FF on my hardware.
Internet Explorer gets less than 1% of the usage on my PCs. It's been removed from most of the operating systems I use. Those systems have all seen performance increases that have made it worth the effort.

On all but 2 copies of Windows, I've removed Internet Explorer completely. One of them is this 98FE box. The other is a copy of 2K.
Removing Internet Explorer makes major changes to your system. A lot of software uses IE components. If you decide to try this, back up your entire system first, preferably in a way that allows you to extract individual files. If you have a dual-boot system, 7Zip can be run from one OS to archive the other. You may need them for certain apps to work.

Hello Wilders.
Just decided to join. You are always very informative!
Here's my take:
When I looked for an alternative to IE a few years back, I looked at Opera first because of its features, especially email. After struggling for a long time to integrate to eschange data with Outlook, as well as incompatibility with some web pages, I gave up on it. However recently I decided to have a look again and am still reviewing it.
I then looked at Firefox as instinctively used it until now because it never got in the way of my web browsing. With opera it was all about opera. With firefox it was all about the browsing, much like IE was at the time (- the security). Then I got extension overload and every few months I would just start afresh. Firefox always kept it lean and that was attractive as opposed to some of its variants at the time.
Fast forward to today and firefox has enough built-in functionality for me to make do with only a few needed add-ons. I have to have a tab counter because I usually have many tabs open due to the nature of what I do. So that aspect of browsing determines what I can use these days.
Also one note here is that firefox 3.5 crashed continuously for me. That situation has been improved with 3.6, which also seems a bit faster to me. While my power machine has almost no crashes. My other machine still had problems, so I had to go out and find another browser to improve my productivity.
I reluctantly started to use Chrome although I hated google update. When Chrome started having extensions, I was sold. It has WOT and that is essential to me. It is almost as effective for me as firefox and quite nippy!
So Today:
1. On my power machine - quad core with 8GB memory and Win7 64-bit I use firefox 3.6.
I often have up to 200 tabs open at one time - busy bee. None of the other browsers can handle that. Why bring amateurs to do a professional's job. I have tested firefox 3.6 with more than 300 tabs. It uses a lot of my ram, but it does not crash. The others I tested - Chrome (next best), Safari and Opera can handle 100 tabs. In fact Chrome can go over, but becomes unwieldy. IE8 starts deteriorating/crashing after 50 tabs.
2. On my other machine - Dual core with 4GB of memory and Win7 64-bit (This machine used to have Win7 32-bit with similar results) I use Chrome as the default with Firefox as a backup. IE8 is still on the machine, just in case, but I have made it less accessible by removing shortcuts. I try to maintain chrome with less than 100 tabs at a time. The problem with firefox on this machine is that at around 100 tabs its starts crashing as the machine has less resources than the power machine.
An Update: I have since experimented with SWR Iron (the portable version) and this seems to have improvements in speed over chrome. Also it has no communication with google - otherwise it is very similar.
Just thought the tabs-resources part would be interesting to others. :)

I also have IE8 and Safari installed, but I never use them. IE, MS doesn't really give you a choice, and Safari just wasn't stable.

Unless there is a new version number, Opera updates quite easily and with Opera sync, you never have to save your bookmarks ever. For new version numbers it would install in a separate folder.
