What could be causing this??? This happens when streaming, watching a video on a media player or watching a video on line.

Going to need more info:

What distro and architecture?

What video card?

What browser?

What plugins are you using?

Are you using compiz-fusion? If so, turn it off and see if it improves.

Most important with Linux is to have the latest drivers installed from the manufacturer, if you don't wish to deal with scripts, use Envy which does it automatically for you in case you have ATI or nvidia card.

I have firefox, Ubuntu 8.10 and an ATI card. Using Noscript, Adblock Plus and i'll get the rest after work.

I heard something about not having acceleration enabled. How do I do that?

I have dual GPU ATI 4850 and I always use the driver from ATI/AMD site and not the one from repos, everything works fine here. In case you don't wish to go the script route, install envy sudo apt-get install envy and fire it up from system tools, it will automatically log you out of gui and go into text mode, remove older drivers and download latest and install.

I never had any problems with mine here, compiz included. I do always install the drivers manually off the ATI site, that seems to make a difference.

Download them from the ATI site, you will get a .run file (ati-driver-blahblah.run). From a terminal, just do a "sudo sh ati-driver-blahblah.run" and follow the prompts.

The blah blahing is confusing me.

I don't know the exact filename so replace "blahblah" with whatever the real file name turns out to be when you download it.

After the installer runs and finishes, I also usually do "aticonfig --initial" at the command prompt also. Then reboot and you're done.

ATI does not support Linux drivers for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600. They say it's up to the laptop maker. In this case Gateway. Of course Gateway has no Linux drivers for my card either.

Yeah, in that case I guess you're stuck. I seem to be more fortunate here. If the PC isn't too old, might be worth buying another graphics card that they all support?

I've had this issue for a long time now.

I have an intel gm965 integrated graphics card.

I'd rather have flawless video than care for using compiz. (tearing happens regardless)
