I have just signed up for an unlimited account with the online backup service Mozy (http://mozy.com/home). I had a couple of question about it if someone more knowledgeable wouldn't mind helping me out.

1. How do users delete files?
2. Must files exist on your local harddrive if they are going to exist on Mozy, or can it be used for files where there is no local copy.
3. Do files get deleted after 30 days if there is no local copy. For that matter, will they ever get deleted as long as the account is active.
4. I intend to use Mozy to back up everything on my local drive, backup images, documents and all my mp3s, which currently totals about 40 gig. Is this advisable?

I am certain I will have more questions the more I use Mozy.

Thanks,

n8

I'm not a Mozy expert but I do use a MozyHome free account.

1. You can't.

-{ Quote: "How do I delete old backups?

The short answer is that you can't, but don't despair! You most likely don't need to delete anything because your quota is based on your current backup configuration. Your previous backups don't count against you, and they don't take up any of your quota.

To illustrate further:

Let's say you have a 1000 MB quota. If you back up 300 MB of photos, then your available quota goes down to 700 MB, and you've got 300 MB of photos on our servers.

The next day, you change your mind and want to back up spreadsheets instead. So you tell Mozy to only back up spreadsheets and not photos, and it goes ahead and backs up 100 MB of spreadsheets. So now, your available quota is 900 MB because you are only backing up 100 MB of spreadsheets now.

However, if you want to restore those photos, you still can for 30 days until the file versions expire." }-

2. Yes, and no, respectively. It's a backup service.
3. Their answer:
-{ Quote: "When you delete or deselect a file it is removed from your backup configuration and marked for deletion on the Mozy servers. Mozy keeps a copy of that file in older backup sets just in case the deletion was accidental. Those older backup sets are kept for 30 days and then deleted." }-

In my case however, I have long ago deleted files that I still can get back with Mozy. I'm not sure why.

4. -{ Quote: "Is there a limit to what I can back up with MozyHome Unlimited?

No. We weren't kidding when we named it MozyHome Unlimited. You can back up as much as you want of whatever you want and we'll make sure you have plenty of space to store it all." }-

Mozy is not a system backup program though, so don't use it to backup your Program Files or Windows folders. It's for data files.

For a backup that large why not just use an external drive?

I have used Mozy to back up about 25 gigs of data. The initial upload time takes several days but updates are quick after that.

The fact that Mozy deletes files that are no longer on your PC caused me to look at other options. I am now using IDrive. Same cost as Mozy. A bit faster on uploads and it doesn't delete anything unless I specifically delete the files in IDrive or sync PC to IDrive.
