Hello,
I am hoping someone can answer a question that I have. My knowledge in computers is limited and I hope this is not a dumb question.
I backup my CAD files to a DVD. These files have the following extensions:
.stp
.step
.ad_prt
.sat
Also the corresponding PDF’s of the drawings.
Is it possible for any viruses, trojans, etc. to hide on the DVD and not be noticed?
(generally there are only approx 20-30 files total)
Does a DVD have anything like a boot sector for viruses to hide in?
If I look at the DVD after burning it, I can see all the CAD files and PDF’s and I was just curious if visually looking at this to check is a step that someone should take?

My normal security is to scan the DVD with various programs and sometimes have a second party scan them away from my system.

Thank You.

DVDs can be made bootable. However, since you're burning the DVD, you're in control of whether a bootable DVD is made. I suppose malware theoretically could take over the burning process and insert malicious boot code, but I don't know if there is any such malware.

PDFs can contain malicious content. There have been some viruses (http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100269.htm) that spread by infecting PDFs.
