There are a few command-line scanners available. I use ClamWin Portable (http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable). If you use this, then ClamWinPortableDBUpdate (http://www.clamup.co.nr/) will make keeping it up to date easy.

Yes AVZ is awesome.:thumb:
Also A-squared do a portable version,Sophos too and Kaspersky VRT but it needs downloading in full before each scan.UBCD4Win has Antivir which can be run off a USB key or the plugin folder transferred to the local system for a portable version.

What's the link to Sophos portable? I thought the Kaspersky one installed a driver or something?

But do they leave registry entries, files?
Clamwin from PortableApps shouldn't, but the rest probably do :-\

cure it only leaves a text file with details about a scan and thats it.
not sure about the others.
avp tool (kaspersky) does install but it cleanly uninstalls.

PortableApps' Clamwin is the only one I've found that has incremental updates (if that is of any importance to you).
(vs. requiring full download in full before each scan)

NSS is a good tool, but requires install first on local hard drive and subsequently makes registry entries.

I use A-Squared Emerency USB Stick, it contains A2-Free and its command line scanner. No need to install, just unzip and use. Since the v4 scanner includes Ikarus AV engine, it one of the best in detection. Its free and it allows you to update the defs too.

Very good tool with it's formidable Ikarus AV engine.
My only gripes with it are:
Scans of individual files is awkward.
Updates I do not believe are incremental.

hmm it installs a service...
how the hell do i uninstall it?
i could remove it manually but i would rather uninstall it via an uninstaller but it doesnt seem to have one.
come to think of it ive got an image from around 30mins ago. ill restore it.

Interesting. DL'd and played a bit.
Clean install on USB. Incremental updates.
Veritable plethora of options / added services.
Could be intimidating for some.
This is a keeper. Thanx.

Just delete it on your USB drive.
Assuming install involved merely extracting the 'a2usb.zip' contents onto your flash drive.

PS: I do not believe updates are incremental (if that is an issue for you).

it installs a service and its set to automatic.
the service isnt stopped after closing the application.
im sure i tryed deleteting the folder when the service was stopped but it didnt work. windows gave me an in use error.
I restored an image so its gone now.
I may post on the a squared forums tomorrow so it can get fixed.

Deleting what folder? There should be nothing on your HD, only your USB.

Sorry, but no such service running here (XP Pro) even with A2 open / running.
Are you sure a2usb.zip contents were extracted solely to your usb, and not your HD?

I don't see any A2-Service installed via USB here on my system. Best to put a post on Emsisoft Forum, to check it out.

Drive Sentry has a portable version.
Checks access to your USB while its plugged in.
& and has a 256 encrypted folder.
http://www.drivesentry.com/AntiVirus-Firewall-gofeatures-for-computers-and-removable-media.html
Snazzy website too.
Free for 30 days then very minor limitation ( IMO).
$10 / £ 10 / E 10 if you want to buy.

I just skimmed through this thread and it looks like nobody yet mentioned my two favourite tools for cleaning PC's. Both can be run directly from USB stick or CDR/DVDR.
- McAfee Command Line scanner.
http://vil.nai.com/vil/virus-4d.aspx
- Trend Micro Sysclean

A-Squared does. It even has a command line scanner. So for tough infections, I just make my USB DOS bootable and add A-Squared Emergency Stick file on a folder. It solves almost every problem :thumb:
Alternatively you can look at rescue CDs like that of BitDefender and DrWeb which have updater built-in.

Are you refering to an automatic update scheduler, or manually invoked incremental updates?

manual updator.
so that i can keep a tool on my usb stick and update it without having to redownload the whole tool again.
