Hi ... I am curious if there is any programs that would help out a buddy of mine ... He is going to connect to the internet for the first time and will be using the basic phone line connection but his problem is when he is on line and someone might phone his house while he is online is there a program that he can use to let him know that someone is trying to call him ??? And if there is would it matter what country he is in as well ???

There are also hardware devices available at many office/computer supply stores for this purpose. CallWave is by no means a freebie, and the charges can add up. The hardware option is a one-time purchase of roughly $30-40.

If he goes with DSL or cable, he'll be able to be on the phone and online at the same time.

I believe that dial-up was stipulated and, for the price differences between D-U, DSL and cable, I'd spend the $30 or so for the hardware.

Say you are online and on the phone at same time?
That is where call wave comes in on broadband.
I really don't know the price but can find out since a number of rural friends use it and I know they don't have much extra money.

Everything (well, almost!) is looking into. I'm more hardware-oriented, and a cheapskate to boot!
Along with CallWave, there was another program (Pagoo) I downloaded awhile back that offered something similar, but the download was as far as I went with it. I figured that anyone who needs to call me knows what times to do so, and being online is a great way to avoid the telemarketers!

Hi ... Thanks all for your info and Dangitall i will have to look into the hardware devise and see whether it will work in the area and without having to pay the phone company any extra charges for the uses for it but if there is i thinking it might be best that he goes cable type hook up ... Reason as to why he mightl go that way is there is now 2 different types of internet connection are cable company offer ... There is high speed and high speed light ... In are area basic phone line connection that provide good connectively is around 25 dollars ... Now for high speed light which is twice as fast then the basic phone line and it cost 30 dollars in this way he can use the phone and the computer at the same time ... But then again its worth to take a look for this hardware devise and see what its all about ... Thank you all .... S

You're more than welcome! If you do choose to go with the hardware, let me know how it works.

http://www.deltacom.co.uk/acatalog/Tel_Fax_Data_Switches.html
this site does a range of phone/fax/data switches designed to detect type of call and divert to device eg. fax and some with auto answer features. There may be a way of setting up one of these to do what you want.
good luck and hope u get it sorted,
Hazel
