View Full Version : Right-click menu in windows explorer (win98se)

Hi guys,
recently i installed some software and unfortunately that horrible stuff disabled my right-click possibilities in the Windows explorer for drives, folders and among others *.exe files, but not for txt files. Of course this is very uncomfortable and the developer only suggested to put back the original settings file which the program had made with the install, but this does not help at all.
I can't even right-click a file to scan with something or zip it or i must go all to msdos to do it that way!
This is a most horrible situation.
So i hope somebody knows settings to look at in the registry i guess which i can't find myself at the moment.
Mind you, this is win98se, so i have no system restore, i really need some windows shell settings ( i suppose)

Hi Jooske,
Click Start > Run > type or copy&paste regedit /e C:\ContextMenu.reg "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers" in the dialog box and click OK.
Then find C:\ContextMenu.reg, open it in notepad and post the content.

Pieter

Oops! they say "mind the wrapped lines!" in such cases the part behind the content.... reg needed to be added too.
I wonder if this says anything at all, but ok this is in that

Do you have TweakUI installed? If so, try the 'Repair' tab, selecting 'Associations'. This may work. Also, if you have X-Setup installed, try Appearance - Files&Folders - Enable "New" Context Menu.

Reying to understand better what this could be for.
That 4th key in my regedit doesn't say me anything but so does most in the whole registry with values etc.
I know it happened installing the four programs of FreshView, FreshUI, etc, does this help in searching?
That FreshUI made the original.fbu which should have been the original settings, but putting that back did not help, so i think after reading the MS desktop story --fortunately that part is still ok-- and the direction Pieter is trying to put me in feeling this is just the start of it.
I waited with doing anything after Pieter's posting, just only read and looked in some keys doing nothing with them.
I hoped it would be as easy as go yo key HEYK..... \exe and change value .. into ''

Hi Jooske,
I'm afraid it won't be that easy. They are completely gone there.
The last one is strange though.
Can you search your registry for this CLSID:
{C5098102-EAF2-493A-883A-B7B751B21534}
Let me know what you come up with.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{C5098102-EAF2-493A-883A-B7B751B21534}
"FolderBox Shell Extensions"
Under that one is InprocServer32 with value
"c:\program files\folderbox\FolderBoxShell.dll"
and
ThreadingModel "Apartment"
I remember long ago to have installed FolderBox but never use it anymore (consciously -- it's part in the right-click menu it's there long time so i guess that didn't cause the problem)
I did see in many places in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT etc several ShellExt with all kinds of programs and if i remember wel in drive and drives, exes, files, folders, etc (not 100% sure what i saw where) so maybe the files you're looking for are all placed to separate locations?
Would it help if i hunt for the FreshView and FreshUI things?

Hi Jooske,
If you still can run Fresh UI:
go to Explorer > Folders Settings > Folder Context Menu
What do you see now in your right window???
Gerard
Jooske
March 8th, 2004, 06:35 AM
Realising you mean in Fresh UI, not the windows explorer itself.
I see them all with a blue icon and telling no discription given.
I see this for files and folders.
I hoped with clicking in Files on the
Any files context menu to have added all files to be added for right click but no, still nothing , even not after reboot
In the folders i see two of these:
folders context menu no description given and
folders context menu (more) a red icon telling me to add a show DOS box from this folder command
same on the Drive contenxt menu
For the descriptions things i don't know what to add and i don't know what that "show DOS box thing would implicate.
So all these are all standard default i suppose and what should i change then?
Seems i need those context menu's for folders and files, right to add some command which i don't know yet.
The strange thing is other file tipes like txt, dll and others do function still on the rightclick with the rightclick menu as supposed, it's the drives, folders and exe files as far as i discovered till now.
Does this help to give step by step instructions?
It might be of interest that in windows explorer on this main computer i have all these problems and that is where i installed those Fresh programs; if i go via this same windows explorer computer to the computer shared via the network i can rightclick on the shared drives there, but also there the right click on exe files doesn't work now.
What irritates me hightly is that even with setting back what i thought the original windiows settings from before these installs doesn't make the wished changes!

Hi Jooske
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\batfile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\batfile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Fresh UI]
@="{bla bla bla bla bla}"
Do you have a key that looks like the one above?
It seems that when you run a RegFile it only adds its info into your registry. It does not delete any keys not listed automatically. Since ContextMenuHandler is not a default SubKey of BatFile it was not affected.
Does FreshUI erroneously add a SubKey and Data to the BatFile Key. If you have this subkey and delete it,does all the functionality was return to your context menu. I think System Work
Hope this little tip helps.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\batfile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{86F19A00-42A0-1069-A2E9-08002B30309D}
Only this in that location.
Are we coming near?

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{86F19A00-42A0-1069-A2E9-08002B30309D}\InProcServer32
with in the right panel Shell32.dll and ThreadingModel "Apartment"
Guess that inprocserver mut be the same folderbox mentioned above
In the meantime even dit an IE repair and reboot but no difference.
Is it interesting to know if i do this?
In windows explorer
click on a drive letter one time, in the left pane or right, in the top menu clck file and then i can get the drive and the rightclcik menu opening from there for drives.
Same if i click a folder, the rihtclick menu opens that way.
But if i select an exe file in the right pane and try the same, i crash, the one time with kernel32.dll error, the other with error unknown, the last time with this invalid page error

which is why i tried that IE repair, which didn't help either.
In another part i saw the FreshView
In installing that it asked to have file associations, and i said first it was ok, as i saw it were all images and music files, but i discovered i no longer was able to use Irfanview, so i disabled all file associations for FreshView. No exe files in that, btw, but now i think maybe this action left somewhere an extra key where it should not be.
With Controlers story in mind too thinking about that.
So you guys think another key would never be overwritten or a value changed, just added a value?
We might be getting nearer somehow......
Pity is i don't dare to run a regclean automatic thing anymore, only a thing i can look and decide myself if i would know what i am doing (i don't know, just can look)

;DHi Jooske! As I'm not much of a teacher skilled, try to follow me on this. Scanregw is a file in windows folder that automatically makes backups of your registry. It will allow you to backup 10 times. It stores settings in two files, that it keeps hidden, Sytem.dat and User.dat. They can be found in the windows folder. If you rename user.dat to something memorable and then reboot win98se will rebuild user.dat and it will take scanregw settings for it's rebuild, I'm looking for the names of those files now but they are on your computer usually starting with 00something.extension. Hold on this is usually an easy fix if your scanregw settings were in auto. I'll be back with more info shortly as I have done this before on numerous occasions. Ibn effect win98se rebuild will backup a day each time you rename user.dat.
Jooske
March 8th, 2004, 10:08 AM
I have that thing indeed installed time ago and it did save me another time longer ago.
Doesn't it make a backup each day? I set it to 5 days and the problem started with the install of Fresh at 19 february so that is more then 5 days back......
I'm sure there are more people with the kind of problem so this can become educative for others too to look in several places and try the one or the other before it is too late!
I wonder if it would be a good or bad idea to uninstall those FreshView and FreshUI things and try if that would clean out the registry too? Although there is the risk it could make the damage even bigger if there are changed connections to them which could be lost with that uninstall, so i hesitate.
Valkyri001
March 8th, 2004, 10:12 AM
;DHi Jooske! The files are kept in C:\windows\sysbckup\rb###.cab The windows default is only 5 days so you may only have 5 files rb000.cab thru rb005.cab if I'm correct they are renumbered each time scanregw runs, so rb005.cab is the earliest. I have renamed these also so windows is forced to use the one I wanted. It will only use the one it can find.
Valkyri001
March 8th, 2004, 10:16 AM
;)Yes there is a way to have scanregw save its backups to any other folder you want as many days as you want. I can work on a txt file and repost if you want with instructions. scanregw has saved me before as I save backups to my zip drive for 10 days.

As a last resort you can do a scanreg/repair from DOS
Jooske
March 9th, 2004, 01:44 AM
I'm still looking for associations. FreshView seems to have overtaken things, part of them, i noticed i can't even rightclick on desktop icons: some do give the rightclick menu so i can look for properties for instance, others don't react at all. It's completely unclear for me which do and which don't. At least when something is an file.exe it does not react nowhere on right-click, some other files do, others don't.
If it had only not been so many weeks now i had hope for a scan... repair this moment i'm unsure.
Edit:
I did try the TweakUI to re-associate the icons, but did not really help yet.
After that i uninstalled FreshView, and tried the rightclick, still not back, maybe because i hadn't rebooted yet.
Installed it another time to look what it did exactly. It does associate itself with every known file type, even if you uncheck that option and in the options configure to do none of that. In the helpfile (needed to install that to look through it and try some things out) it only says uncheck and all is back to normal. NOT!
It does associate itself among others to *.exe like was my first horrible discovery.
OK, i toggled all filetypes on and off and saved off, no change.
Uninstalled FreshView again.
Looked in the registry and did a search. Still associated with all knows filetypes, it's just stuck in the registry. But not with a carefull but angry Jooske at hand, search next, delete next delete a few hundreds times, it was also there as FView so now no more.
Reboot,
in the windows explorer and desktop many file types are associated correctly back again to the normal windows right mouse click, but still not the *.exe and folders. So i get really closer.
It's so good to see the rightclick menu really unfold at several files and drives with all those nice options!
Now i don't dare to look at scanreg /repair as it could bring back all those malicious FreshView things, could it?
Nice program, overtaking the shell without warning and not even completely as also in that i could not get a rightclick on the exe files, but on many filetypes i could not in windows explorer, which made me think about this uninstall option.
What do you think guys, any hope for the exe?
Guess that should be in some ........euhmmm shell / shellex .. back to Pieter's first road?
And there is still maybe something to do with the FreshUI (or should i ditch that too?) -- the file context things were not all solved yet as i don't know what to type in there.

Still no luck. Any more ideas? FreshDevices -- maker of FreshView still not reacting otherwise but sending me weekly new offers.
Support? which support?
In their last newslist they do ask for ideas and source code for the FreshView so maybe they are trying to solve anything, but it would have been nice if they told me to hang on as they are investigating.

Works for win98 not sure about win98se
To restore the Registry and system to a "pre-install" state, simply reboot and hold down the CTRL key or F8 key so that you get the Windows 98 boot menu. Then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt only and hit Enter.
When you come up with the C:\> prompt change to the C:\windows\command directory. Once there type scanreg /restore, hit Enter, and the system will run the Windows Registry Checker and come up with a list of 5 backed-up Registries and their corresponding backup dates. Choose the date that is nearest to the pre-install date, press Enter, and that Registry will be restored to the system
QUESTION; you Do have ACTIVE DESKTOP ENABLED ?

Controler i can't get the folder properties as i can't right click on them and when i select a folder, no matter if i do in right or left pane and in the top menu try to open "File" explorer crashes.
So it's very really wrong here since i sintalled those four FreshDevices things. Since they don't give any support after that one email to put back the origin.fbu i can just give a loud warning to be extremely careful with their software.
I feel really bad as some weeks ago another user here asked me for a download helper without advertisement etc and i adviced the Fresh downloader although i told honestly i did not know the software yet and would d/l it myself too for a try.
We all know by now the drama those four things caused on my system.
I saw somebody else in a HJT log with Freshstuff in it too but not sure about their problems nor if they were related to the fresh software either. I just noticed it and it would be interesting to know if there is a relation.
To be able to do a real comparition i wonder if anybody can check their results for exe associations, seeing my screenshot i made from the freshdiag tool.

Registry restore is no use as the oldest date is 9 march which is after i started this thread and after i had some settings repaired already a bit.
I wonder what does scanreg /fix again, it says it fixes the registry but i remember there were advices not to use it, but i am no longer sure why not.
Active desktop, i don't remember how to see if it is enabled or not, i see it as a menu option and i do remember it was ever strongly adviced not to enable it which i probably did not then.
I think there has to be looked in a file (?) context menu somewhere like Pieter started with in the first postings where there might be too many entries of which some should be disabled or deleted but which and where?
There is a new FreshView version, i have no FV installed at the moment and i hesitate to try the updated one if that could possibly fix these errors; in fact i think it could make things worse; it doesn't tell if it has fixes or just some new functions and my questions about that have not been answered so ..........

Somebody was nice to give me this link
http://www.xs4all.nl/~wstudios/Associate/index.html
which is a freeware tool to associate files in the registry.
The registry is for me 90% unknown area,
so i found this
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
and the values in the right pane:
standard "exefile"
content type "application/x-msdownload"
ZAMailSafeExt "zl9"
it seems so strange for me.
where can i look more?
See the difference with the screenshot above? Would have expected to see the same values and associations at least.

it is your file associations as I can see now from your screen shot.
I think the default program to open EXE files is explorer in Windows 98 isn't it? I see your percent stuff there but no program associated with it.
This is MS's discription on how to add items to the context menu
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/shellcc/platform/shell/programmersguide/shell_basics/shell_basics_extending/context.asp
You can always try that and see.

Hi,
1.
I was wondering whether jv16 Power Tools could help Jooske.
2.
Some quick copies of some regkeys on my Dutch W 98 SE box:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
Waarde (standaard)
Gegevens (geen waarde ingesteld)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\file\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers
Waarde (standaard)
Gegevens (geen waarde ingesteld)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
Waarde (standaard)
Gegevens “”
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
Waarde (standaard)
Gegevens “”
Some notes:
2-a.
I only have the Dutch version of Windows, so some of these words are in Dutch.
Alas, I don't know the exact translation in English.
I suppose:
waarde=Value
gegevens=data
2-b.
The characters “” are not exactly as they show up, but I have problems to see them exactly....
2-c.
I don't know what the exact difference is between the following:
Gegevens “”
Gegevens (geen waarde ingesteld)
Any ideas Pieter? ;)

standaard = default
i made it
default = ""
or default= (no value)
what you post as * * is "" on my system,
suppose it is just double quotes and not '''' 4 times '
Jan, if you read through the link Controler just posted, that has lots of interesting stuff and unfortunately it is over my head but i think this is getting closer again.
So the right click problems at the moment
.exe (no reaction at all)
folder (guess is the same like directory??)
.lnk
so practicall:
i can't rightclick an exe to create a shortcut.
I'm not sure in the registry where i see "file"
(in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT little below exefile) if that would be the file we click or rightclick on the windows explorer or on top of the windows explorer browser where it says "file" etc.......
DVK just posted in the TDS forum the default for explorer is "%l" %*" like i have so............ guess i should not touch that for the .exe
(nerver am sure it that is a l or an 1 suppose an L

Under shell no such thing as \openas\command

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
@default="ICQMenu"
what do you have there in the right pane behind the ContextMenuHandlers then? "" or (no value) ? something else?
shouldn't that * indicate it is for the whole system and everywhere on all levels, directories, files, folders, all extensions? So should there anywhere be a association with MOUSE or the same command "%1" %*" somewhere on that level?
yes, it's in the shellex several programs, but far from all on my system, and in the shell above it is is another few for the rightclick scans and zip etc and the open command.
Maybe the shell\openas\command is for you openwith?
There is something to open them with.
So where is my rightclick scan for the folders, lnks and exe files :) as everything else seems to be associated in the right ways.
I kept the other FreshDiagnose and FreshUI for possible diagnoses but would it help ridding the system of all those components completely?

What do you guys think of this page
http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/ui_cntxt.html#general
and explanation about modifying the registry in this part.
I did not change a thing yet, as i remember in the screenshot was a command for opening an exefile with the "%1" %*" so maybe there must be one more in another place, any ideas?

Even uninstalling all the FreshDevices tools didn't work in the means of bringing the functionality back,
still searching the registry for parts of it, as it does not clean up a thing of it's mess.
I stil think in an essential part maybe a
@defaul=(no value) should be
@default=""
but which, where, and is it this or something else ?

This problem may have been going on too long for this to be a possibility, but have you tried running the System File Checker? I don't know how it would work on a Dutch system, but on my US 98SE system, it's Start - Run - SFC.
By the looks of things, it may be time to bite the bullet and reinstall Windows. :'(

Click this link to download the exefix for win98.
Execute the file to repiar the exe file association.
http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/4IE_Only/EXEfix08.com
See if that starts to help.
I am going to need to boot to 98 tomorrow

Try this file for the link files. Copy the bold to notepad.
Name as fixlink.reg
Save as all files.
Double click on fixlink.reg to enter into the registry.
I am not sure. You mauy ve to restart for these changes to take effect.

I haven't read through everything here yet. But this one:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\openas\command

Is a nice tweak which some people add. In 98 to get the open with option, you usually have to do a little extra. Hightlight. Press Shift click. This tweak creates an Open With context menu entry for you.
Everyone's context ,menus are a bit different. Shellex is added to by various programs you may or may not have installed. There are basics we all have. But additions.
More keys to look at are:

I am not sure what the current situation is. For the heck of it Search the registry for this phrase:

Thank you so much for all your tips Mosaic1; i was asleep (time zone difference) so couldn't respond sooner.
I'll take my time to go through your postings one by one, and come back later with hopefully good results!
Thank you for all this as i am getting new hope, seeing areas not worked on yet like the lnk etc.
The .lnk part you posted are all correct in my system
only i have a dutch system so your "shortcut" is for me "snelkoppeling" as only difference.
Going to work on your postings more.
NoViewContextMenu

Could this be the problem to open or rightclick on a file and open the rightclick menu?
I was used normally to rightclick once on a file and the rightclick menu unfolds,
i tried indeed in the situation where i only see the first time i try a rightclick on a file see the waiting a few instances, the next time immediatelty no reaction without any waiting.
Now i tried several ways, highlight the file, press shift or contr or alt no reaction, press the "file" in the menu on top of the browser and sometimes i get some reaction, most of time a crash which can be different: the one time unknown, another time the rje... thing, another time kernel32.dll, so tehre it is not stable.
Today i created a new folder, and could not rc on it to change it's name. But i highlighted it with the mouse and clicking the "file" button on top (which did not unfold!) after a few instances waiting the selected new folder name was open to change it's name, so i could not do any other selection on that.
OK, changed the name and pressed enter like always and crashed with one of the errors and needed a reboot.
The files i can't select for unfolding rc menu or properties are
folders
exe files
lnk files (shortcuts)
Till now did not discover other extensions.
RC on drives was gone too but that is back since uninstalling the Fresh Devices software.
The exe's do function though as executables, but i can't look at them nor change names, nor zip them etc.
So left clicking on them is ok to make them running.
The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for exe, exefile, drive, linkfile, folders i do have, hoping to have the right values behind them.
I ever used TWEAKUI for win98se, long ago, could that be the thing which added that value you mentioned above?

Looks like getting really close don't we? Trying to find everything everywhere on my system, but it's hard to find. Read shocking reviews and experiences with it in several locations on internet, newsgroups, etc so......
Wonder if a seach for ...what to look for?.... on 29 february (when i installed that terrible stuff) could do some more, although it will not tell all places in the registry........
Fond on 29 february created also a quicklaunch folder, which is empty, in the same location where i see this
C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MSIMGSIZ.DAT
googling around no info about the file, kaspersky online check does not alarm on it, not sure if it belongs there or not, the empty quicklaunch folder created that same day does get my attention; i looked more for that same date, nothing else really interesting. Now i do hope i did indeed install all the nasties that same date, not quite remember, so looking deeper. Hard to tell with all those things uninstalled and lots deleted already.

That makes me wonder if there is something on those context menus which is not present in the others.
For the problem places go into the registry and have a look. See what is different between Folder and / directory and txtfile. Maybe you have to remove the key entirely and then inport the correct settings. An Import doesn't remove an addon.
I forgot to answer this:
rjhEextensions If you don't use it and it is causing and error I would uninstall. If it is on a context menu it may be having an effect too.

For the folders:
For instance i have a folder My documents on my desktop for this occasion. Opening it, no problem,
in it several folders. Rightclick on a folder, no reaction.
although the first time the few seconds waiting with the sand timer, if i try it after that a second time no matter on whihc folder immediately no reaction.
I can select a folder and after click the "file" button on top in the folder window, nothing happens, only if i click on the selected folder again i have the option to change it's name, as i see the little window around it and can type in it.
If i would click the File on top before selecting a folder in it however, the button behaves normal and the file menu under that button unforlds normally with the several menu options.
If i open windows explorer, go to my documents from there in the left folder pane no reactions, in the right pane almost the same behavior, with the exception of after closing the possible renamed folder i get an IE crash like described before.
Selecting (rightclick) the drives:
in the leftpane on the drives on this computer no reaction like with the folders and in the right pane since uninstalling those Fresh Devices programs i can rightclick on the partitions/drives on this system again, (was absolutely impossible with the FD stuff installed)
The drives on the other system via the network i can rightclick on in both panes.
Of course my first try was to look at rightclicking the folders and exefiles and linkfiles via the network, not possible, only the drives.
Of course now my next exercise ....
from the other system not any problem to rightclick on the files and folders, links and exefiles not on that system itself nor via the network on this system.
That one is a windows ME system, so not all the same everywhere ... (thinking of comparing registry) not the same programs installed there either unfortionally, just a few. On that never the freshdevices were installed and it doesn't connect to internet either.

In my opinion the best course of action at this point would be to have someone install the same program you did. And on 98SE. Not on 2k or XP. But monitoring the install with a utility and for insurance first creating a registry backup, to see exactly what changes were made. Then you would have a list to compare against. And it would be even better if that person ran a Dutch language version of Windows.
You do have a lot of shell extensions installed. However at this point you are going in circles. And those shell extensions were there before the problem started.
Uninstall anything you don't use. But if this happened after installing one certain program , then that program is where I would concentrate attention. Do you know anyone willing to track an install and create a report for you?
Way back in this thread, TWEAKUI was mentioned. I can't remember. Did you install it and repair File Associations? If not you should follow that advice too.
You might even consider extracting new copies of explorer.exe and shell32.dll from your install cd using SFC. I doubt they are the problem, but it can't hurt.
At any rate, a map of what this program does would be very helpful.

All the advices in this thread are tried, including the TWEAKUI
Things started with installing Fresh Devices, all the four parts, Fresh View, Gresh UI, Fresh Diagnose, Fresh Download
Conchise and a few others used Fresh Download as well and got rid of it finally; i did hope Conchise and/or others who were able to get rid of that finally from their registry would remember what more to look for, as i found FView associations which i all deleted, FreshDevices, but i don't see anything i recognise as belonging to FreshDownload as i uninstalled it and looked for hundreds of "FD" things which i could not recognise where they come from.
At the moment am looking into this page (http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:djMCpCnLNIoJ:www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/rightclick.html+restore+rightclick+menu+on+folders&hl=nl&ie=UTF-8) too

Hi Jooske,
I know those tweaks. I was a registry specialist on the 98 OS forums long before I ever heard of Spyware.
You have a lot on your context menus. Uninstall anything you no longer use as a matter of housekeeping.
And it would be perfect if we had a map of all changes made by the programs you installed and then found caused these problems. We could track and see if they are all removed.
Also, an exported key does look different from how it looks when you open the registry and read directly. I think you had a question about that earlier.
I know this is after the fact and very frustrating. At this point you are running around in circles. Something is preventing your context menus from behaving like they should.
But what? Remove anything having to do with those programs. Any leftovers.
Extract new copies of explorer.exe to Windows and shell32.dll to System using sfc.
One more very very very long shot. I am not sure this is even pertinent.
Go into the registry and delete these two keys:
HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\StreamMRU
HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams
They will be recreated fresh .
Reboot.
(Be sure to backup before you make any changes. )
One more quickie. You don't have a dll sitting on the desktop by any chance, do you? If so. put it in a folder.

Thank you!
rjhextensions thing on the loose.
I uninstalled it and all is fine!
All rightclick menus unfold nicely again on exe, folder, lnk
Is't that great?
Now i'm certainly going to look more in the things you mentioned!
That you are a registry specialist is known all over internet, fortunately as i've seen you helping out people more often.
This is really great, and gives courage to look for more uninstallation of things i don't use indeed, even if they just sit there maybe without doing anything.
Found Reghancer (lavasoft) on my system, which i never used as i don't know how exactly.
The exported files do look different then in the registry indeed, the oreer of things etc and i walked for instance through that ROOT\directory key together with the one on the windows ME where is really very little installed and there were but a few differences.
That value "ICQMenu" for instance surprises me in that place which seems so very central, and that very long hexe thing etc etc, further they are identical,
so i thought i had to look in other parts.
Maybe the rjhextensions thing which was there very long time got corrupted with the fresh devices stuff, never know; the problems started with that install so looks like it.
Anyway i'm really grateful for al the help and all your extra explanations and advices, as i see i have still lots to clean out. Even getting the feling the system is reacting faster again, but that is probably imagination.
Thank you again, so very much for not losing the courage on my system!
Big karma cookie from me!

Jooske,
You're welcome. I am very happy to hear it. You provided the clue when you mentioned the error way back there. The last suggestions I made were the kitchen sink of desperation in the event nothing else worked.
Uninstalling extras doesn't hurt. I agree, it's a good idea.
Reghancer is an alternative to using regedit. As I recall it has a few nice extra features which regedit doesn't. I think it even allows you to create shortcuts to keys. It is nice not having to drill down every time you want to access a favorite key.
Some values are exported in Hex and can be confusing. But must be left in that condition.
Thank you for the cookie.
PM me anytime you need registry help. I am rusty, but will give it a go. I miss it.

I'll have lots more to clean out for sure. in the meantime a few very nice tools and pages were posted in this thread and possible solutions to look at, hope others will not really get into thios kind of problems but if so the recommendations and links will help out too.
Windows will always keep you busy, no time to get rusty at all! :) !

Speaking of which, here's my copy and paste advice regarding a really nice Registry Search tool. It is a vbs, and exports all keys it finds as a result. It has been very helpful on the Forums.
As for a search of the registry here's a very nice script to help you out.
Download it and run it. When it starts, you will be prompted to enter a search phrase. Do that and go have a cup of coffee.
When you get back, a message box will be there on the desktop.Say yes to open the results. Copy and paste the contents into a reply here. Once you close that file, it will be deleted, so please save it as results.txt. We may need it again.
Here's that link:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Find Registry Search Tool And download it.

Not that this is of any use to you whatsoever Jooske but just to make a point. I have unsubscribed from FreshDevices spamming three times....this came to-day in my mail from them......
Release of Fresh UI 7.o2.
How to Draw.
Get paid for my Opinions.
Giveaways for over 55s.
DVD Suite v 5.0
People Investigator and Finder.
New: TV Wall Giant Screen.
Stock Trading Wizard.
They just don't let go. This is the third spam mail from them in three weeks.

So you're on their weekly spamlist
So am i, good to make some noise and warnings for other people, put them on your blocklist, in the hosts file, in the super restricted zone and coockies wiped immediately if they would get near your sytem less then 100 meters, etc etc. Highly infected stuff brbrb
I remember to have seen in one of the spams mailwasher and that kind of antispam.
You could of course send a very difficult question to their support and tell them you successfully uninstalled all their software till that problem is solved. A technical description about "how do i get rid of you completely" f.e.
Maybe mentioning a thread in the wilders top security forum where tips are given what was all tried and what to look for, some additions and the "should i try..?" thread together with this one will do .. it seems as i did not see my weekly dose of their spam yet, but that might be a timezone thing.
This moment i'm really doing other urgent things here, i come back on Mosaic1's registry test parts later.
So much work stayed undone with me giving so much energy in trying to get my system unfolding its secrets!

Hey Jooske
Someone already mentioned this, but not sure if you actually looked into it...
Is there "NoViewContextMenu" string in the following location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
?
Jooske
March 23rd, 2004, 08:08 AM
Hi Phant0m``,
that string was nowhere in my registry, thought i posted that?
Good that you remind to make that part clear for other users who ever (hope not!) have this kind of problems to look at too!
Had a few other strings tehre, not this one.
It was the rjhextensions program got corrupted with installing the FreshDevices --not sure which of the four of those caused it, but i was unable to detect or repair it with those programs, and after uninstalling rjh was still corrupt. After uninstalling that all was fine again and the system seems lots faster too!
For instance i had a weird problem in windows explorer those last few weeks with that software still installed:
after deleting a file or folder from the right pane in windows explorer it took lots of time to be able to use that screen again and all those other files and folders had finally decided to fill the empty space and i could do next steps like cleaning the recycle bin, it even crashed several times on that, all that kind of things.
Uninstalling the FreshDevices didn't solve that part, but since removing the corrupted rjh it is as it should be normal, quick. And this i notice in many more areas, so i'm more happy cleaning up old stuff and even had the courage to create a HJT log (where Pieter didn't see anything urgent too) so it's getting back into a normal system step by step.
It was the first time in my posting here (first page of this thread) that the rjh ...... error showed up, all other times unknown files, pages, kerner32.dll crashes, etc etc so lucky this one showed up and seems to have been the cause.
Of course i thought of infections and kept searching and scanning, and of course in my cleaning up i'm still looking around with a more criticle eye.
For instance in this location you sent me to look for Microsoft i see also a Microsof so i have to try to find out what this is or was, not recognising it yet, that kind of things can keep a person very busy :)

This probably wont work but there is no harm in trying this out, create the string using 1 for it enabled and re-boot the PC, afterwards modify by using 0 to disable and re-boot...
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
Value Name: NoViewContextMenu
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)
