On two machines I use a combo of three reg cleaners...
jv16 PowerTools 1.3
RegCleaner 4.3 (also by Jouni Vuorio)
CCleaner
I back up and optimize the registry with ERUNT and NTREGOPT.
I find this combination of tools to be very effective and efficient.

I use CCleaner and AusLogics Registry Defrag. I tried many reg cleaners and I have found out, that all good and agresive cause problems and since 1-5% speed improvement is not worth problems, which can result in a few weeks, like BSOD, damaged or slowed Windows or software, I prefer only weak, but safe CCleaner.

Haven't' used one on a two year old XPx64 installation, face no issues or slowdowns. I don't do much installs and unistalls, only upgrades of programs installed so probably in my case, its not requisite to use a registry cleaner.

I have used RegSupreme Pro for years. I have recently upgraded to jv16 Power Tools 2009, as it was offered free by Macecraft software. With Vista, cleaning old registry entries doesn't seem to have any significant impact in terms of performance as with XP.
On the other hand jv16 Power Tools has some tweaks, easily reversible, that can indeed speed up Vista, particularly in shut down time.

AUMHA Discussion: Should I Use a Registry Cleaner?
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=28099&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
To quote from that thread:
-{ Quote: ""Summary of Registry Cleaner Software:
Do not bother with this. It it unlikely to help, it can cause harm.
There are no end-user benefits from running registry cleaners. Unecessary entries in the registry do no harm. This should not be a regular maintenance chore. It most certainly if done should not be automated.
I hold to the singular distinction I made in the beginning: there are times that a fast registry editor with search is needed to fix a single issue under Expert hands. There is no justification for the regular use of automated registry cleaning tools; and as the results above show, they are of dubious merit as the "fix" for even one-off problems that need solving.

Hello,
I used CCleaner at work and at home and I did like it. The problem is that I screwed up both computer when cleaning the registry. At work was a big deal with the IT Manager. At home at least I had the freadom to test wathewer I want, I still like it, but I end up restoring my PC.
Should I use it again? I'm not so sure.

I don't run a registry cleaner but do use Registry Workshop (http://www.torchsoft.com/en/rw_information.html) as a regedit replacement. I do manual deletions if I need to and RW does the rest of the maintenance such as backup, defrag and it also has other features that I use.

That's kinda the reason I use a registry cleaner. I mean, I don't have any real problems, atleast not registry related that way, so problems would be fixed in some other way. I think more that if you've erronous or actually empty information that Windows reads when searching for something, it would logically take more time.

Ccleaner seems buggy still if you set it for start on windows and clean feature. Manually it works okay. FCleaner seems to work but the last updates I don't see it working correctly. It likes to play sound effects on load and after cleaning. I guess the author is into sound stuff. nCleaner is very powerful and you got to know what your doing with that one. That can run on schedule load with windows and clean.

I seem to be the only one who uses Yamicsoft Windows 7 Manager. The registry cleaner is not too agressive, you can chose the categories to scan(Invalid Paths, Invalid Active X,...) and of course back-up the whole registry which one can restore with the same tool.
But anyway I only use a registry cleaner to quickly look up potential problematic keays and delete them manually if needed.
The bundle also contains a Junk File cleaner. Cleans up all kind of clutter, especially temp. Running this tool from time to time prevents building up clutter that may effectively slow down your system without doing any harm.
Resume: There is no need for registry cleaning on a regular basis as the clutter that may slow down the system is removed by the junk file cleaner rather than by the registry cleaner.
Of course all the above is based on my personal experience and situation.
PS I use Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Registry virtualization is an application compatibility technology that enables registry write operations that have global impact to be redirected to per-user locations. This redirection is transparent to applications reading from or writing to the registry. It is supported starting with Windows Vista.
"Another registry structure"/"Registry virtualization" doesn't mean at all that in Vista and Seven there aren't: "orphaned or misplaced information accumulates and begins to clog your registry", "the Windows Registry can begin to contain information that's no longer valid", "and causing error messages and system crashes" (from Microsoft). If the system is used registry junks is created - like file junks.

One reason to clean the Registry that has nothing to do with speed or stability is privacy. I recently ran a Registry scan (with Registry First Aid) in Windows 7 x64, and browsed some of the “errors” (more than 1000) than the cleaner found.
I found several entries than contained the full names of files and videos that I keep in TrueCrypt encrypted volumes. When I opened or played these files or videos, the paths were written in the Registry and remained there.
Now before opening these files I enable Returnil. This helps to keep the Registry clean and protects my privacy.

I've used CCleaner for 2 years. No bad (nor noticably good to be honest) effects so far on the system.
I once used a cleaner named EasyCleaner and it wiped some HP scanner installation registry keys, and I had to reinstall the scanner's drivers and software to use the scanner again. After switching to CCleaner that hasn't reoccured.

I used auslogic registry defrag after my initial setup. only 15 day trial.
Since then, only ccleaner and not registry cleaner.
I used often when using XP. just my opinion, but I don't think it has a significant performance effect on 7. (that is of course unless you install and uninstall zillion programs." ;-)

I just tried CCleaner Registry Cleaner to remove some non-existent applications showing up in File Cleaner. Turns out it was nothing, but trouble.
I had bugs like Task Scheduler's "Run with highest privileges" access denied. Luckily I made a backup.
Searched the registry myself, and did a far better job. Never touching one again.

It's way easier (and way more effective) for me to edit the registry myself.
That said, I have CCleaner installed because I'm lazy.

I use CCleaner for removing all the temp files and general left-behind files. I have an extensive list of custom directories I like to empty out from time to time.
I also Auslogics Registry Cleaner once in a while, but mostly after doing some uninstalls, or botched or repeated installs. If something really goes wrong then it's time to recover from a backup. If I need to find something specific in the registry I will Use RegCleaner 4.3 (jv), as a method of locating recently made entries. So this gives me an idea if I need to clean up after a sloppy un-install.
Otherwise I don't really mess with anything.
Been operating like this for years and have no issues.

I use Perfect Registry, for which an annual fee is required, but it works well.

I've read that for win7 and vista registry cleaners aren't very necessary due to virtualisation.
But is there any interest to compact the registry ? And if yes which soft do you use ?
Thanks.

For HDD, you can clean files and then you defragment it, that same applies to registry, you can clean it and then defragment it, but uninstalling leave quite a mess as well. I use free Quicksys RegDefrag and it reduced my registry size from ~100MB to ~60MB. When the registry is compated, system boots faster and it looks like it is a bit smoother.

I know that puran defrag do it too. What's about defraggler ?

IMO puran does a pretty poor job as reg defrag, Run it and then run Jv16 to see what i mean. as far i know defraggler doesn't have such an option.
