Hi,
Is Kaspersky AV (KAV) freeware?

From my understanding, never has been. I've purchased it year after year for almost the past 10 years.
The Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool is free, updated a number of times a day, but must be downloaded again to receive new definitions. Can do a full scan of your system (detect/remove).

No real time protection.
The AVP tool however, is great to use as a backup scan, say when using a free AV (avast, avira, pc tools).
But if you buy the Kaspersky AV, you're getting (from the website):
-{ Quote: "Essential Protection
Protects from viruses, Trojans and worms
Blocks spyware and adware
Scans files in real time (on access) and on demand
Scans email messages (regardless of email client)
Scans Internet traffic (regardless of browser)
Protects instant messengers (ICQ, MSN)
Provides proactive protection from unknown threats
Scans Java and Visual Basic scripts
Preventive Protection
Scans operating system and installed applications for vulnerabilities
Analyzes and closes Internet Explorer vulnerabilities
Disables links to malware sites
Detects viruses based on the packers used to compress code
Global threat monitoring (Kaspersky Security Network)
Advanced Protection & Recovery
The program can be installed on infected computers
Self-protection from being disabled or stopped
Restores correct system settings after removing malicious software
Tools for creating a rescue disk
Data & Identity Theft Protection
Disables links to fake (phishing) websites
Blocks all types of keyloggers
Usability
Automatic configuration during installation
Wizards for common tasks
Visual reports with charts and diagrams
Alerts provide all the information necessary for informed user decisions
Automatic or interactive mode
Round-the-clock technical support
Automatic database updates" }-
Is it worth the cash? Yes. Less if you buy 3 licenses.

KIS has everything you need, but it slowed down my system a bit due to it checking every new file and processing it through heuristics and hips.

Not free as we know it but if you do online banking it maybe.
Here in the UK my Bank gives out free licenses for KIS ( for 3 computers ) to their online customers.

You may buy it through a friend/relative that has a credit/debit card. It's definitely worth the money.

I think it was freeware when aol had it a while back. That was a really good AV. Then AOL cut them or KAV quit. That was a very sad day for the freebie security people.
